This is a story about Anna and Sophie, two women who leave their grey lives behind in search of some colour. They set up home on a remote Greek island where they indulge their passions; Anna for writing, Sophie for sewing, and both of them for cats.
Soon the reality of their new life becomes entangled with Anna's fictional characters, together with the wild imaginations of the islanders, and a patchwork emerges of love, friendship, misunderstanding, mermaids, monsters and witches, all held together by the bond between Anna and Sophie.
Is their bond strong enough to hold their new life together?
She keeps the reader's mind active, taking you on a journey from humble beginnings to a satisfying resolution, with many jumps, surprises and sub stories through it's duration.
Fiona has a way of keeping you wanting to know more about her characters and makes them personal to you. What also impressed me are the intertwining stories within the main story, which adds depth and insight into the main one.
Yet another page turner with twists and turns along the way, leaving me unable to put the book down !
Patchwork is a playful, feel-good read that had me laughing out loud more than once, especially the scene where she tries to invite him to dinner, and he thinks it’s a funeral for the fish. The image of the fish not on a plate but floating on a cloud above the house still makes me chuckle. McCready’s writing is full of warmth and vivid description, with endearing characters that make the story a joy to follow. Light, funny, and wonderfully imaginative, this book was a delight.
I was very lucky to receive this book from the author via a giveaway, and my star rating is 4.5 out of 5. It's difficult to place this book into a single genre as it encompasses a bit of romance, some wonderful descriptive writing on the local Greek area, some mystery and lots of humour. The main characters of Anna and Sophie are well written and endearing, and Giorgio and his dysfunctional extended family are fantastic Greek players alongside the English women. This is easy to read and held my interest throughout, it's a quality page turner that I'd recommend to everyone who fancies a light hearted look at life with equal amounts of sadness and happiness. So please I got the chance to experience this author's work.
If you could change your life what will you do?? stop working, from wet and foggy England move abroad to a sunny country (Greece), and do with your life what you always dreamed of. This is exacly what Sophie and Anna done, they followed their dreams. What I liked in this novel: 1. Great story with lots of unexpected turns and twists which kept me interested what happens next 2. no sex scenes (and still great story!!!!) 3. Unexpected end which left me a little dissapointed as I want to know what happen to Anna
Stunningly written, you really get to connect and relate with Anna and Sophie. Full of twists, you really get to go deeper into a perfectly woven story about "wants" and "desires" between the two women.
It is indubitably a great read as I joined in on the two women's lives, smiling at the hopeful parts and starting when McCready adds a little spice in the story.
Caused some embarrssing moments for me on the train because I frequently laughed out loud!! Not often a book does that for me - very very funny moments and a greek man you can't help but fall in love with.
A must read for cat lovers and anyone who needs a funny, well-writen story to finish a long day at work.
Wry, charming and lovingly observed, Patchwork is a affectionately subversive take on the Shirley Valentine genre. An entertaining and delightful debut novel from a bright and engaging writer with a very promising future.
