A collection of the best loved nursery rhymes. Although recommended for preschoolers, Long’s book contains some perennial favorites with children of all ages. The book is richly illustrated. Long, Sylvia. Sylvia Long’s Mother Goose. San Francisco: Chronicle Books LLC, 1999.

Target Audience: Babies to Grade 2

Mother Goose books are often one of the first books read to very young children. If young children don’t have the book read to them, then most kids will at least hear the stories in children’s songs. The poems are short and have wonderful rhyming patterns. Adults can indulge themselves in in this book as the memories of these stories come rushing back with amazing fami

A beautifully designed hardback collection of all the Mother Goose stories and rhymes that you remember from childhood, and some you don't. Seventy-five classics ranging from Humpty Dumpty to the Old Woman in a Shoe are drawn in details with animals dressed as the characters of the stories. I liked this collection of Mother Goose rhymes from the beginning. The bookplate stamped on the very first page reads:

"Be careful as this small book ages,
Do not fold or tear the pages.
Treat it carefully as can be,
For this book belongs to me."

The artist's note is also well-worth reading. It begins: "... I felt strongly that there was no point in doing another [Mother Goose collection] unless I could find ways to make it unique." And that she did. The art is so inviting and natural, that it seems

This nursery rhyme anthology is recommended for children from pre-k through 2nd grade.
"Mother Goose" is an anthology of nursery rhymes. Included are the popular, traditional nursery rhymes and ones that are not as well-known. Behind each of the rhymes, there are illustrations that depict the nursery rhyme.
I really liked this nursery rhyme anthology. I liked that there were both rhymes that I knew from growing up and rhymes that I have never heard of before.

I really enjoyed Sylvia Long's rendition of Mother Goose! There weren't as many rhymes as there were in some of the other books. There are only 83 rhymes, but she was able to fit on ryhme, or a portion of the rhyme on each page with a full sized illustration. The pictures were large, full of color, and they really grabbed the attention of the reader. The pictures were full of detail and they represented the ryhme very well. I loved the ribbon place holder as well as the detailed index. The rhyme ...more

It continues to amaze me the number of new rhymes I find each time I read a book like this. I love verse, and new rhymes send me looking for the stories behind them. It's funny to think of these in the manner or cartoons, where several things pass over the heads of the children listening, while the adults gat a good laugh too.

This is a great use of anthology for the classroom. I think that the illustrations are fantastic in this particular book, and I would love to use this book as a poetry read aloud for the classroom. I would also use this in a porter or nursery rhyme introductory unit as well.

The best Mother Goose that I've come across. Wonderful illustrations. Includes almost all of the nursery rhymes that I remember plus many I never knew. Long interprets them all in her illustrations in a very compassionate and humane way. Not always an easy task for nursery rhymes!
Bright and energetic illustrations match the rhymes of mother gooses nursery rhymes. Parents and children can enjoy the stories through the pictures. There are many connecting pictures between the stories.
