About the author

Satyajit Ray (Bengali: সত্যজিৎ রায়) was an Indian filmmaker and author of Bengali fiction and regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and watching Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist 1948 film, Bicycle Thieves.

Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents.

Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a number of awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Award in 1992. The Government of India honoured him with the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Early Life and Background:
Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a writer, illustrator, philosopher, publisher, amateur astronomer and a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, a religious and social movement in nineteenth century Bengal. Sukumar Ray, Upendrakishore's son and father of Satyajit, was a pioneering Bengali author and poet of nonsense rhyme and children's literature, an illustrator and a critic. Ray was born to Sukumar and Suprabha Ray in Calcutta.

Ray completed his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics at Presidency College of the University of Calcutta, though his interest was always in Fine Arts. In 1940, he went to study in Santiniketan where Ray came to appreciate Oriental Art. In 1949, Ray married Bijoya Das and the couple had a son, Sandip ray, who is now a famous film director.

Literary Works:
Ray created two of the most famous fictional characters ever in Bengali children's literature—Feluda, a sleuth in Holmesian tradition, and Professor Shonku, a genius scientist. Ray also wrote many short stories mostly centered on Macabre, Thriller and Paranormal which were published as collections of 12 stories. Ray wrote an autobiography about his childhood years, Jakhan Choto Chilam (1982). He also wrote essays on film, published as the collections: Our Films, Their Films (1976), Bishoy Chalachchitra (1976), and Ekei Bole Shooting (1979).

Awards, Honors and Recognitions:
Ray received many awards, including 32 National Film Awards by the Government of India. At the Moscow Film Festival in 1979, he was awarded for the contribution to cinema. At the Berlin Film Festival, he was one of only three to win the Silver Bear for Best Director more than once and holds the record for the most Golden Bear nominations, with seven. At the Venice Film Festival, he won a Golden Lion for Aparajito(1956), and awarded the Golden Lion Honorary Award in 1982. In 1992 he was posthumously awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

This is a very interesting adventure on how an amateur sleuth, feluda and his cousin, Tapesh, manage to solve the case of the theft of an emperors ring. The journey brings them in contact with mysterious people, scenarios and blood-curdling threats. Unexpected incidents occur, which keep you at the edge of your bed and arouse suspisions in your mind. This book is the first in the amazing feluda series ans a must read for everyone!!

ছোটবেলায় আমার বোনকে ফেলুদা পড়তে দেখে আমিও পড়তে নিয়েছিলাম। কিন্তু ওইসময় এই জনরার প্রতি আমার একেবারেই আকর্ষণ ছিল না। বড় হয়েও হয়নি। আসলে থ্রিলার, গোয়েন্দা, মিস্ট্রি এই জনরার বইগুলো পড়া শুরু করেছি ২ বছরের মত হবে। তা যাই হোক, ছোটবেলায় ভালো লাগেনি বলে এখনো ভালো লাগবেনা এরকম একটা ধারণা কেন এতদিন মনে নিয়ে ঘুরছিলাম কে জানে! ফেলুদা ভালো লাগেনি বলে সত্যজিৎ রায়ের আর কিছুই পড়িনি। নিজেকে আমার প্রায়ই বোকা বোকা লাগে। আজকে একটু বেশিই বোকা লাগছে। নাহ, আর দেরি না। আজকে থেকে মিশন সত্যজিৎ শুরু।

Satyajit Ray was a multitalented individual: director, screenwriter, lyricist, magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher, and composer. He is famous as a filmmaker who won Oscar Academy honorary award in 1992. However, he is equally a great writer as he was a filmmaker.

He was inspired by both Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie and he has created Felu the sleuth on the lines of Holmes and Poirot, and sidekick Tapesh (who is his teenage cousin) on lines of Watson and Hastings; together they both solve the mysteries. This novella is set in my hometown, Lucknow, and this makes me partial to it. Lucknow is city of Nawabs and the central mystery revolves around a ring that once belonged to a Mughal emperor. Felu and his sidekick Tapesh solve this sinister riddle with their wits.

The story that began my fascination for Satyajit Ray in general. And it has aged really, really well for me. From the characters to the locations, to the celebration of Indian heritage in general (obviously in a non-jingoistic way) to obviously the thriller elements and the way it incorporated the Blue Scorpion and Black Widow spider in the story. Especially the way North India was presented in a mysterious, adventurous way that is astonishingly modernized even when drawing elements from the past. The first story to solidify Feluda’s mark on Bengali literature, and according to me, the popularity is well-deserved.

ফেলুদা সমগ্র কিনে ফেলে রেখেছিলাম, শুরু করবো করবো করে আর হয়ে উঠে নি।তাই বছরের শুরুটা ফেলুদা দিয়েই শুরু করলাম।
বাদশাহী আংটি, পড়ে ফেললাম। ভালোই ছিল সবমিলিয়ে।
অনেকের মতে, ব্যোমকেশের মত ফেলুদা ততটা উপভোগ্য নয়,আসলে ব্যাপারটা সেরকম না।ব্যোমকেশ আর ফেলুদা এক লেখকের লেখা না তাই তাদের চরিত্র সৃষ্টি আর কেস সলভের ধরন হবে আলাদা এটাই স্বাভাবিক।
বাদশাহী আংটির, পুরো ঘটনা ঘটে লাখনোতে।
ফেলুদার কেস সমাধান করার পদ্ধতি খুব আলাদা, সে যথেষ্ট ঠান্ডা মাথায় কাজ করতে পারেন।
বনবিহারী বাবু চমৎকার একটা চরিত্র যে নিজে চিড়িয়াখানা বানিয়েছেন নিজ ভবনে তার আরো অদ্ভুত শখ আছে, জানতে হলে পড়েই ফেলুন।
#মোটের উপর,খারাপ লাগেনি তবে ফেলুদার চেয়ে বনবিহারী বাবু বেশি দৃষ্টি কেড়েছেন।

জটায়ু ছাড়া আসলে শুধু ফেলুদা-তোপসের কাহিনি ঠিক জমে না। জটায়ু হচ্ছেন যেকোন ফেলুদা-রান্নায় লবণের মতো, তাঁকে ছাড়া সত্যজিতের চিরমুখরোচক রান্নাও কিছুটা আলুনি হয়ে যায়! রহস্যটা একটু বেশিই অনুমেয় লেগেছিল আমার কাছে, হয়ত সেটা সত্যজিৎ-এর একেবারে প্রথম ফেলুদা-উপন্যাস বলেই ঘটনাপরিক্রমা কিঞ্চিত কম চমকপ্রদ, তুলনামূলক কাঁচা হাতের ছাপ থেকে গিয়েছিল। তবে নিখাঁদ অ্যাডভেঞ্চার আর অন-লোকেশন ঝকঝকে স্বচ্ছ দৃশ্যায়ণে সত্যজিৎ বরাবরের মতোই তুলনাহীন, ঠিক পাঠককে একটানে ঘরের কোণ থেকে নিমিষে নিয়ে গেছেন লখনৌয়ের পথেঘাটে-বাড়িতেরাস্তায়, ফেলুদা আর তোপসের সাথে রুদ্ধশ্বাস দৌড় করিয়েছেন সন্দেহভাজন দুর্জনদের পিছু পিছু, তাদের চোখে যেন আমিও প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী লখনৌয়ের ঐতিহ্যবাহি ঐতিহাসিক সব নির্দশনের। সেই সাথে প্রথমদিকের কমবয়সি ফেলুদা-তোপসের মধ্যকার ভ্রাতৃ-রসায়নটাও দারুণ উপভোগ্য ছিল।

আমার প্রথম ফেলুদা। পরবর্তীতে আরো বেশ ক'বার বইটা পড়া হয়েছে। কিন্তু এখনো এর আবেদন এতটুকু কমে নাই। লখনৌর রাস্তাঘাটের বর্ণনা এখনো চোখে ভাসে। তোপসে নেহায়েতই বাচ্চা তখন, জটায়ু তখনো আসেননি। কিন্তু সত্যজিৎ ছিলেন ফুল ফর্মে।

फेलुदा का पहला कारनामा वाकई रोचक था। रहस्य अंत तक बरकरार रहता है और पाठक को कहानी के साथ बाँध कर रखता है। मज़ा आ गया। फेलुदा चटोरा है दूसरे की प्लेट से लड्डू और मुर्गे टाँगे उठाकर गटक लेता है। ये जानकर अच्छा लगा। सही पटेगी हमारी। :-p :-p

আমার প্রথম ফেলুদা পাঠ এই বইয়েই! দার্জিলিঙের পটভূমিতে ফেলুদা’র গোয়েন্দাগিরি শুরু হয়েছিল, এ-কথা আমরা সবাই জানি। কিন্তু লখনউ থেকে শুরু হয়ে বহুদূরে ছড়িয়ে পড়া এই জমজমাট এবংং প্যাঁচালো রহস্য, যাতে মিশে গেছে চুরি, খুন, ট্যারান্টুলা আর র‍্যাটলস্নেক, আমার মতে অদ্বিতীয়। আমার কাছে এই কাহিনির আকর্ষণ আরও বেশি, কারণ এতে ফেলুদা একেবারেই নভিস। হয়তো সেজন্যই এই বইয়ের শেষে যখন বাদশাহি আংটি ফেলুদা'র আঙুলেই ওঠে, তখন মনে হয় একেবারে রাজযোটক হল!
না পড়ে থাকলে এক্ষুনি পড়ুন!

কাহিনী, রহস্য, রোমাঞ্চ সবই একটু গড়পরতা মানের লাগল। মানে চিরচেনা ফেলুদার মত না। তবে ফেলুদার সাথে সময় কখনোই খারাপ কাটে না। এবারও ফেলুদা, তোপসের সাথে লখনৌও ঘোরা হয়ে গেল।

পুরোনো ফেলুদা সিরিজ নতুন করে পড়তে শুরু করেছি। সেই একই রহস্য অথচ এত বছর বাদে এসেও কী ভালোটাই না লাগে। লক্ষ্নৌ যাবার ইচ্ছাটাও আবার মাথাচারা দিয়ে উঠলো সাথে বড় ইমামবাড়ার ভুলভুলাইয়া দেখবার। ফেলুদা সিরিজের শুরুর দিকের গল্পগুলো দারুণ ছিল। বাদশাহী আংটির ছিল জমজমাট রহস্যময় কাহিণী।

কাহিনীর শুরুতে দেখা যায় ফেলুদারা লখনৌতে ঘুরতে এসেছে। কিন্তু ঘুরতে আসলেই কি হাতপা গুটিয়ে থাকবে শখের গোয়েন্দা ফেলুদা? বরং তার সাথেও পা পা করে রহস্য হাজির। লোখনৌতে এসে ফেলুদারা তার প্রধান সহযোগী খুড়তুতো ভাই তপেশরঞ্জন মিত্র ওরফে তোপসে এর কাকা (ধীরুকাকা) এর বাসায় এসে ওঠে। ঘটনা চক্রে কাকার বন্ধু, ডাক্তার শ্রীবাস্তবের সাথে দেখা হয়ে যায় ওখানে। তিনি তাদের একটা আংটি দেখান। যে সে আংটি নয় এটি। বাদশাহী আংটি এটি। আওরংজবের আংটি এটি। আংটিটি সে একজনকে মৃত্যুর হাত থেকে বাচানোর জন্য পেয়েছে।

কিন্তু সমস্যা হল এর পিছনে চোর লেগেছে। তাই নিরাপত্তার জন্য ধীরুকাকার বাসায় রেখে যায় শ্রীবাস্তব আংটিটি। ধীরে ধীরে কাহিনী আরো জমে ওঠে যখন দেখা গেল অনেকেই আংটির ব্যাপারে আগ্রহী। এর মাঝে হঠাত করে বনবিহারী বাবুর (শ্রীবাস্তব বাবুর পড়শি) চিড়িয়াখানা দেখে বাসায় ফিরে এসে দেখে আংটি চুরি গেছে।

ফেলুদা লেগে পড়ল আংটি উদ্ধারের পিছনে। ফেলুদা কি পারবে তার প্রথম অভিজানে সফল হতে?

ফেলুদাকে নিয়ে নতুন করে বলার কিচুই নেই। শঙ্কুর মতন কালজয়ী একটা ক্যারেকটার তৈরী করার পর সম্পূর্ন ভিন্ন ধর্মী আরেকটা ক্যারেকটার কেমনে তঈরী করলেন এটা অবাক করে। মজার বিষয় হল ফেলুদাকে নিয়ে সিরিজ বানানোর বিন্দু মাত্র ইচ্ছে ছিল না সত্যজিতের তাই ফেলুদার প্রথম গল্পে তেমন ভাবে ফেলুদার জাদুকরী ব্যাক্তিত্ব কিংবা ক্যারিজমা ফুটে ওঠেনি। বাদশাহী আংটি থেকেই বরং ফেলুদার ফেলুদা হয়ে ওঠা।

ফেলুদার শুরুর দিকের কাহিনী। লখনৌতে জমজমাট একটা রহস্য উদঘাটন। আংটি যেন তার বাদশাহর আঙ্গুল খুঁজে নিয়েছে।

ফেলুদার প্রথম উপন্যাস। ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরিতে ফেলুদার একটু ঝলক দেখিয়েছিলেন লেখক। তবে এই লেখাটি প্রমাণ করে দেয় ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরি তো ছিল কেবল একটি ট্রেইলার মাত্র। ওটা লেখার পরই হয়তো ভেবেছিলেন এটা নিয়ে চমৎকার একটা গোয়েন্দা সিরিজ হতে পারে। ভাগ্যিস এই চিন্তা লেখকের মাথায় এসেছিল, না হলে বাংলা সাহিত্য এই ক্ল্যাসিক সিরিজ থেকে বঞ্চিত হত। আর ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরি হয়তো ঠাইঁ পেত সত্যজিৎ রায়ের কোন এক গল্পসমগ্রতে।

ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরি পড়ে ফেলুদা আর তোপসে সম্পর্কে হয়তো একটা ধারণা পাওয়া যাবে। কিন্তু ফেলুদা সিরিজের ফ্যান হওয়ার পিছনে এই বাদশাহী আংটির ভূমিকা ছিল সবচেয়ে বেশি। ফেলুদার গোয়েন্দাগিরি যখন প্রথমবার পড়েছিলাম তখন এত তাড়াতাড়ি গল্পটা শেষ হয়ে যাওয়ায় মনটা একটু খারাপ হয়ে গিয়েছিল। আগে তিন গোয়েন্দা পড়ার অভ্যাস ছিল, তাই আরও বেশি টুইস্ট আশা করছিলাম। কিন্তু পরের গল্পেই যে রহস্যের ছড়াছড়ি শুরু হয়ে যাবে তা বুঝতে পারিনি। আগের বার ছিল দার্জিলিং আর এবারের পটভূমি লখনৌ। তপেশের বাবার এক বন্ধু থাকেন লখনৌতে। লখনৌ বেড়াতে গিয়ে তপেশের সেই ধীরুকাকার বাড়িতে গিয়ে উঠে ফেলুদা আর তপেশ। সেখানেই পরিচয় হয় অস্টিওপ্যাথ শ্রীবাস্তবের সাথে। এই শ্রীবাস্তবের একটি আংটি আছে সম্রাট আওরঙ্গজেবের আমলের। সেটা নিয়েই পুরো কাহিনীটা।

এই গল্প পড়েই সেই প্রথম র‍্যাটল স্নেক সম্পর্কে জেনেছিলাম। আর সেটা নিয়ে কৌতূহলের সীমা ছিল না। সাপ যতই অপছন্দের হোক, ঝুমঝুমি জিনিসটা ছিল ভারী পছন্দের। এখনও কোন মুভিতে বা অ্যানিম্যাল প্লানেটে র‍্যাটল স্নেক দেখালে এই গল্পের কথা আমার সবার আগে মনে পড়ে। আর আমার মত সবারই হয়তো একটা ট্রাভেল প্লেস এর লিস্ট আছে। এটা পড়ে সেই লিস্টে লখনৌর ভুলভুলাইয়া অ্যাড হয়েছে।

It has been some years since I read an Indian novella, so the cognition I felt while reading this book was wondrous even though its events date back to mid twentieth century.

Now, about the book : it's a sublimely written short story about robbery of a priceless Mughal ring and how master sleuth Feluda accompanied by Topshe (story's narrator) uncovers the mystery behind it. What follows is a journey full of suspense and intrigue including a deadly encounter with a python in a closed cabin.

I haven't read a lot many short stories so I didn't know what to expect but this book was surprisingly interesting. Feluda, our protagonist was an extremely well written character with great presence of mind and analytical skills (which is of course expected from a mystery novel's hero) but what had me by surprise was the sly way he worked his magic to uncover the enigma. Topshe's character also turned out to be astounding, he was a smart kid who handled situations with great equanimity.
Side characters were all amazing as well and descriptions in the story were perfect (neither too vague nor too vivid) even though this is a translated version.

What disheartened me a bit was the lack of toe curling suspense and slightly rushed ending (though seeing as since this is a short story I don't think my complaints are justifiable) but overall it's a good book to read if you enjoy mysteries and happen to have some spare time on your hands and I'll especially recommend it for children.

ফেলুদা তখনো বিখ্যাত হয়ে উঠেনি। সেই সময়ে বেড়াতে গিয়ে হাতে আসে অদ্ভুত এক কেস। মহামূল্যবান এক আংটি যা কিনা বাদশাহ আওরঙ্গজেব ব্যবহার করতেন, তা চুরি হয়ে যায়। ফেলুদা শুরু করে তদন্ত। গল্পটি হরিদ্বার, হৃষিকেশ আর লছমনঝোলা ঘিরে। সত্যজিত রায়ের হাতের লেখা ব্যাপক খাসা। উনার কোন ভ্রমন কাহিনী আছে নাকি খোজ নেয়া লাগবে।
ছোট বই, পড়ে খুব মজাই লেগেছে।

Review:
After finding the first Feluda short story, Danger in Darjeeling, mediocre at its best, I decided to give another chance to this series. Thus, I went ahead and picked up The Emperor's Ring, which describes Feluda's second case in the city of Nawabs — Lucknow. Feluda, the amateur detective, joins his little cousin Tapesh on their vacation in Lucknow, and soon enough, they get embroiled in the mysterious case of the theft of a priceless ring that once belonged to Emperor Aurangzeb.

The Emperor's Ring is a much longer story than its 20-page long predecessor, and hence has a lot of time to set up the mystery. It's a thrilling ride, full of dangers, threats, and blood-curdling incidents, that kept me at the edge of my seat until the end of the book. Needless to say, I had a great time reading this story, and I'm glad that I gave this series another chance after the disappointing first story. I also loved the way this story transported me back in time and gave me glimpses of the old India from almost half a century ago. It was also a great way to familiarise myself with the locations that I haven't had an opportunity to visit yet and learn about their historical significance.

Feluda's deductive skills and his genius come to the forefront of this mystery, but I'm sure this is just a tiny portion of what we are going to experience in the stories to come. The intriguing plot and the raised stakes promised a chilling climax — one that we eventually got, and Feluda's quick thinking helped to avert a deadly threat on his and Tapesh's lives. But, despite the almost perfect story, I did come out of the book feeling somewhat slightly unsatisfied. The ending, especially with Mahabir's appearance and the police's involvement, came out of the left field and was far too convenient to serve the narrative purpose.

Regardless of my minor gripe with the ending, I had a great time reading about Feluda and Tapesh's adventures in this book. It succeeded in washing off the sour taste from my mouth that was left after reading the first Feluda mystery, Danger in Darjeeling. I'm looking forward to reading more of Feluda's mysteries and shall be back with a review once I'm done with the next one!

Let me start by saying that I have been meaning to read Satyajit Ray's book for the longest time. I am so glad that I finally read one of his books and I am elated with the way the book made me feel. I am just sad that it took me such a long time to dive into the books by the master storyteller who has won so many hearts with his beautiful stories. Satyajit Ray created one of the most loved characters of Bengali Literature, the master sleuth Prodosh Chandra Mitra aka Feluda. The adventures of Feluda are hugely popular and close to the heart of the people who have read them. The books on adventures of Feluda have been adapted into movies as well and trust me these movies are also worth watching.

So, the first book that I read under the Feluda series is The Emperor's ring. The book is set in Lucknow. Feluda and his teenage cousin cum assistant Topshe are on a holiday in Lucknow. Feluda has a strong belief that wherever he goes, mystery follows him, and therefore Topshe is very excited about what this holiday has in store for them. The prediction of Feluda comes true when a very priceless Mughal Emperor Aurangajeb's Ring is stolen from under his nose. Feluda decides to investigate this and ends up unveiling a devious criminal.

The story is fast-paced and will keep you totally hooked from the first word to the last word. The suspense and mystery around the various characters of the book are very well woven into the story. The book describes old Lucknow and its charm in such heartwarming ways that it will end up giving you a feeling of long-lost nostalgia. The story setup will give you a feeling of being home. It will make you feel as if you yourself are an integral part of the adventures happening in the book.

I read the translated version of the book by Gopa Mazumdar. I did not feel that I missed anything just because I was reading a translated book. This translated book is a blessing for people like me who don't know how to read Bengali but want to read Feluda's adventures by Satyajit Ray.

Go ahead and read this book. You will absolutely love it. The only thing that you might regret is that you took so much time to explore the amazing stories by the master storyteller of Indian Literature, Satyajit Ray.

লক্ষ্ণৌ নামটা শুনে আমার ভাবনাচিন্তা তপেশের মতই ছিল। বাদশাহী আংটি পড়ার পর মনে হচ্ছে লক্ষ্ণৌতে যেন না গেলেই নয়। উর্দ্ধশ্বাসে গল্পটা শেষ করেই গুগল করে জায়গাগুলো দেখলাম। সত্যিই, দেখার মতোই জায়গা। ব্রিটিশ কলোনিয়াল শাসনের জীবন্ত নিদর্শন, তবে লক্ষ্ণৌ এর মাহাত্য এরও আগের। একে বলা হয় সিটি অব নাওয়াব। এ গল্পটা সাজানোর জন্য এর চেয়ে ভালো জায়গা হতেই পারে না। আর সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বর্ণনায় তা আরো প্রাণবন্ত হয়ে গেছে। সত্যি বলতে অপরাধি কে সেটা আগে থেকেই বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম, তবে পড়তে অসুবিধা হয়নি। বিশেষত ম্যাচবক্সের ব্যাপারটা ঘুণাক্ষরেও বুঝতে পারিনি। আর গল্প শেষও হয়েছে টানটান উত্তেজনার মধ্য দিয়ে। এ গল্পের রহস্য, উত্তরণ মাঝারি মানের মনে হয়েছে। তবে প্রদোশচন্দ্র মিত্তিরের অবজারভেশন পাওয়ারের ওপর কোন কথা হবে না।বিপদের সময়ে ফেলুদার ধীরিস্থির স্বভাব দেখে বিস্মিত হয়েছি। ফেলুদার সাথে প্রাথমিক পরিচয়ের জন্য একেবারে জুতসই গল্প।

অনেক বছর আগেই পড়ার কথা ছিল। বড্ড দেরিতে শুরু হলো আমার ফেলুদা পাঠ।

মির্চি বাংলার অডিওবুক একদম তন্ময় হয়ে শুনেছি। মাঝে মাঝে তো মনে হচ্ছিল আমি নিজেই ফেলুদা আর তোপসের সাথে লক্ষ্ণৌ ঘুরতেছি।

ফেলুদা, তোপসে আর তোপসের বাবা লক্ষ্ণৌতে ধীরেনবাবুর বাসায় বেড়াতে আসেন। ডাক্তার শ্রীবাস্তবের সাথে পরিচয় হয় ধীরেনবাবুর সুবাদেই। শ্রীবাস্তব সাহেবের বাসায় ডাকাতির ঘটনা ঘটে, তবে ডাকাত কিছু নিয়ে যেতে পারে নি। ডাক্তার তার এক রোগী
পিয়ারীলালের কাছ থেকে একটি আংটি উপহার পান তার সুচিকিৎসা করার জন্য। পিয়ারীলাল তাকে বলেন আংটির আদি মালিক স্বয়ং মোঘল সম্রাট আওরঙ্গজেব।
ওদিকে ডাক্তারের প্রতিবেশী বনবিহারী লাল বাড়িতে আস্ত চিড়িয়াখানা নিয়ে আছেন। ফেলুদারা ওখানে দেখতে যান, আর ওদিকে আংটি লাপাত্তা হয়ে যায়।

ঘুরতে এসেও ফেলুদা জড়িয়ে যায় গোয়েন্দাগিরিতে। ওদিকে আবার আরেক রহস্য বের হয়। পিয়ারীলাল সাহেবের বাড়িতে গিয়ে তার ছেলে এবং চাকরের সাথে কথা বলে ফেলুদা। ওর কাছে পিয়ারীলালের মৃত্যু রহস্যজনক বলে মনে হয়। ফেলুদা আংটি খুঁজে পেয়েছিল কিনা জানতে ফেলুদা আর তোপসের সাথে ঘুরতে হবে :)
