Once I finished this book, I was left a little speechless because I was not expecting to like it as much as I did.

Now let's not get crazy here and start *gasp* ripping out pages from the book, but I honestly never wanted this story to end.

This is one of the most accomplished novels I have read in a long while and well worth a read, whether you are YA or adult. Don't let the synopsis put you off: it is a novel about death, about suicide in particular. But it is also a creative, imaginative, thought-provoking but thoroughly readable novel in an incredibly well-imagined world. It draws very cleverly on our own environment, reflecting familiar aspects that bring lightness to what otherwise might seem dark subject matter (the Wal-Mart ...more

Dark Night of the Soul is a real gem. E.M Haven has used magical realism to examine suicide and the issues that surround it, and like all the very best indies, it's a completely unique voice that explores its theme in a brave new way.

Seventeen year old Jayden commits suicide and finds herself in a kind of purgatory where teams of people who have committed suicide protect other suicidal souls from the demons that whisper in their ears and incite them to suicide. Life in this purgatory is a serie

I wasn’t too sure what to expect when I started ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, but it’s a fun read – considering it’s set in a purgatory for successful suicides.

We start with Jayden who has taken her own life, but she wakes up in another place – this purgatory – with a group of strangers from different times and cultures. Together

“Welcome to hell brat”- Neala, Dark Night of the Soul

-A Fast paced, action packed, story of second chances.

Jayden is insecure and ready to end it all. She thinks she’s fat, ugly and not worthy to be loved. This leads to her lying in her family’s bathtub after downing several pills in an attempt to kill her self. She just doesn’t want to live anymore so she takes the pills. She’s not sure they’re working until she begins to feel strange.

4 Roses

Most everyone wonders what happens after death. Some fear the unknown, some don't care, and some think whatever lies ahead will be better than living life on Earth. Jayden believes the latter, and takes a fantastic journey when she decides to "move on" ahead of schedule.

The place she ends up after death is nothing she could have imagined or expected. She finds a group of mysterious people sh

I received this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Itching for Books and E.M. Havens for giving me the opportunity to read Dark Night of the Soul.

This is the first time I ever read a self-discovery book. I wasn't sure I was going to like it, because I always avoided this genre. But, after started reading it I couldn't put it down. The story flows really wells, the characters are very well formed and it’s impossible not to fall in love with the story. It’s captivating and deserves t

I was provided a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

When I started reading this book I wasn’t sure it was one I was going to like. The subject matter is a difficult one to write about.

This is a story of self-discovery. I found that after initially taking a dislike to Jayden I ended up really liking her.

The book was well written and I found it difficult to put it down. The characters are well defined and you are easily pulled into their world. The scenes although they were well

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this book. The premise of this book is very fun. People who have comitted suicide are sent to Purgatory to battle demons in a never ending war, but this book doesn't rest there. It goes deeper examining tough subjects and diving deep into the charater's souls trying to answer unanswerable questions.

The author handles this senstive subject matter bodly but with poise and sensitivity. The main character, Jayden, actually grows throughout the book, which i

E.M. Havens pens "Dark Night of the Soul" in a very well written, original and refreshing plot about self discover and the afterlife. This is not your normal "death/suicide" story, it's so much more...but you'll have to read it to understand (I hate spoilers and won't do them). Between the author's characters that were very well developed, realistic and believable, and the captivating plot that just pulls you in and doesn't let you go, I had a really really hard putting this book down. I received an ARC for review. A story about suicide isn't usually the first thing I pick up. I wasn't sure I would like it. Surprise! DNOTS is surprisingly hopeful, in spite of the subject matter. At times it was predictable, but the dialogue is very witty, and there were some unexpected (at least to me) plot twists. I laughed out loud; I cried. I enjoyed the book, and will recommend it to friends.

As a reviewer on a major writing website, I read a lot of books, all genres. Dark Night of the Soul, is different from anything I've read in a long time. From the beginning, I had so many questions, about where Jaydan was and who or what was the judgement, I couldn't put the book down until I found those answers.
This is an entertaining read and I recommend it.

This book will blow your mind!! Very interesting take on the afterlife. Without being cheesy it also offers many nuggets of hope and truth. You will keep thinking about this book long after you finish it. In my opinion this is modern day classic literature!

Well-written and original story, although a bit sad at times. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to teens or anyone that's struggled with depression or self-esteem issues.

I'm so glad I ran across this little book. It's surprising in every way. It's a thoughtful, fanciful, and fantastic look at some very serious topics, part morality-tale, part "Twilight Zone" meets "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Defending Your Life" amid some very clever and unexpected devices. I enjoyed reading this book.

This novel was an entertaining read. The idea for the story is captivating, and the narrative continued to progress in a manner that made the reader eager to turn the next page. It almost reminds me of mortal instruments: city of bones in the story-line, the group of characters is reminiscent of the shadow-hunters of that series. It's worth reading and has some interesting meanings and messages.
