In 2184 New Chicago, Kally Bright lives in a world where the government controls everything from love to time. She, like those around her, has never known personal freedom.
Her one bit of freedom is a secret from most. Obsessed with time and trying to gain some control over her life, Kally spends her days repairing old clocks,. On her sixteenth birthday when Kally quietly repairs a clock and waits for the ruling on who she will marry, she is suddenly transported back in time to 1750 Scotland. A land that is completely unlike the world she came from. Kally’s entire life has been spent repairing time and now that she’s trapped in it, she finds that she has more of it than she ever imagined.
In a world where freedom has no bounds, time takes on a whole new meaning. In her own time, Kally had resolved to remain poor and unmarried rather than follow the government’s design for her, but in 1750 she finds herself able to live and love freely.
This is a lighthearted tale of time travel. We start in a dystopian future, 2185 New Chicago, where Kally is 16 years old and waiting to find out from which pool she will have to select her husband--unmarried or already married. If she opts out, she will be punished with the worst work assignments. Still, Kally is planning to opt out. She is in her secret workshop fixing clocks and discovers a necklace hidden inside a clock. She puts it on and is transported to 18th century Scotland. It takes her some time to realize where she is and how it happened, but along the way she has an adventure of a lifetime and meets a cast of characters that she (and the reader) grow fond of! Kally's relationship with Scotland and the Lennox clan becomes clear by the end of the book in an interesting twist. The ending will leave you smiling.
This was the strangest book I have read in a long, long time. Image Hermoine Granger and her time necklace living in Hunger Games but able to travel to Outlander Scotland in the past. Yes that is exactly what Clockwork by Paige Shelton is like. Now image Hermoine traveling back and forth between those two books and, at some point, falling in love with someone from Outlander too. Then her mom, still stuck in Hunger Games gets sick and she needs to go back again but this time there is a time traveling guide to help her along. Makes my head spin just writing about it. Totally weird book but I enjoyed it somewhat.
I just finished this book and loved it! I’m a long time fan of Paige Shelton and of time-travel mysteries. This book is a page-turner. I highly recommend it.
"4.5 out of 5 stars!! This story was a bit confusing at times but with the way the storyline flows and since it's only from Kally's POV it makes this story one that creates the reader to feel the way she does about the issues going on around her. The storyline in this book is really entertaining and..."
