The Great Bear Sea: Exploring the Marine Life of a Pacific Paradise

This amazing part of the northeast Pacific Ocean is home to some of the planet's mightiest and most beloved whales, sea lions, dolphins, orcas, sea otters and wild salmon. Following up the success of their first two books about the Great Bear Rainforest, The Salmon Bears and The Sea Wolves , Ian McAllister and Nicholas Read take readers on an expedition into the wondrous and mysterious underwater world of the Great Bear Sea. Filled with spectacular images of this largely unknown part of the world, the book also explores the uncertain future of the Great Bear Sea in this age of climate change, overfishing, pipelines and oil tankers. Can a rainforest full of rare spirit bears, fishing wolves and great grizzlies survive without a Great Bear Sea to feed and nourish it?

A lot of the same info as in the other books in the series, and also I've just discovered that I have a deep bias for land mammals and plants over other creatures

Having worked in BC I know when people go salmon crazy. Since Ian is Canadian his descriptions of the First Nation wouldn't agree with those who live in Alaska. Can you buy an Eskimo Pie in Canada?

Nothing deep but I did learn some things and the photography was lovely. This would make a nice gift for a young person interested in the natural world.

Good introduction to animals that live in the Great Bear Sea. I could see this being enjoyed by kids 6-12 years old, if the younger ones are really into animals.

I really liked this book. It had AMAZING photography throughout the book which really added to the book. Fun little facts on each page. Also the information was very informative and interesting about all the animals like dolphins "sea stars" (there was a couple sentences about why there actually not even fish.) I also noticed how they really focused on the smaller (with a few exceptions of course) animals like plankton and why such small animals have such a huge impact on the food web not just the big animals like whales and seals. Also what we can do to make sure these species can live long into the future. The sub tittle is pretty self explanatory "exploring the marine life of the pacific paradise." The only thing I would change is maybe add a glossary??? Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this book to people of all ages.

I really enjoyed this book! It had really great photos. I didn't only learn about the great bear sea, I also learned about the wild life around it. There was lots about grizzly bears and how they are great fishers. There are lots av really cool pictures of the fish under water. I never knew that there were so many fish in the great bear sea!

I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I have read many books about the BC coast, the wildlife, the plants, and the people and this book ranks as one of the best.
