Perillä Helsingissä nuoria brittejä odottaa työnantajan eli British Councilin järjestämä vastaanotto, jossa lehdistö haastattelee ulkomaanvieraat: paikalla on valokuvaajia ja reporttereita Helsingin Sanomista, Uudesta Suomesta ja Hufvudstadsbladetista. Heiltä kysytään kysymyksiä, jotka Diana myöhemmin saa kuulla yhä uudestaan: "Miksi tulit Suomeen?" ja "Mitä ajattelet Suom ...more

Diana's writing is personal, beautifully descriptive, insightful, optismistic and funny. Every foreigner coming to Finland should read this book--as well as every Finn who wants to know what it feels like to be a (white) foreigner here.

Superb memoir of a young British teacher's first year in Finland, back in 1952 when there were only 360 englantilaiset in the whole country. The book benefits from the fact that Webster waited 60 years to write it, so she is as meticulous at portraying the British world she came from as she is in presenting the strange new world of the Finns. We became friends with Diana and her family in the late 80s. We learned snippets of their family history as our friendship grew but this memoir serves as an “origin” story of sorts. I loved hearing her voice as I read and learning exactly how she came to live in Finland. Extremely readable with mental pictures painted of her life and the cultural times in Finland in the 50s. Luckily, I have the next volume to continue her story.
