The preface by Beaumont Newhall and the chapter by the author, George N. Barnard, was very helpful explaining the progression of Sherman's campaign and the 61 photos.

This is a brief review of George Barnard's excellent photos of the Atlanta Campaign, with a few views of Columbia and Charleston SC at the end of the war. It only takes a few minutes to read through, but a nice set of clear, important plates. Recommended for those interested in Civil War photography. Dover edition.

I received this book as a Christmas gift when I was a young boy. Even as a youngster I was struck by the raw, indiscriminate destruction caused by war. Those photographs taken in my own state, on ground I have actually walked, were even more powerful.
