There's always a choice.

The demon Azazel knows an opportunity when he sees one. That's why he took the Unnamed abomination, Haedyn, under his wing and honed her skills. Now she's a predator, like him, but far more dangerous because she holds the potential to wield great power. The kind that humans and supernatural creatures alike will bow down to worship. The kind that will let him create his army of evil-born souls without challenge. And when the full moon rises and a human's rare blood is spilled, Haedyn will be the key to unlocking hell on earth.

Former investigative reporter Lexington Carter saw his brother murdered by vampires, but no one would believe him. Now it's his mission to learn everything there is about monsters, how to kill them, and what happens to their victims. But when he's kidnapped by a super-human albino chick who claims she's protecting him, he realizes that not all supernatural creatures are monsters and there might be one that's worth saving.

Haedyn is the last Unnamed and Azazel's personal assassin - his most prized servant. It's not a title she wants, but it keeps her alive and that's all that matters. But when she is tricked into protecting Lex, the same human her master is hunting, she learns of Azazel's terrifying plan to create an army of evil souls - and that Lex isn't the only one slated for sacrifice.

Can Haedyn accept the truth of her past and face the demon who molded her in his image, or will she risk the losing the souls of those she loves?

I'll let you in on a secret. Okay, it's not really a secret. It's more like a tidbit of useful information that will put you In The Know:

There's a short novella which serves as a prologue to this story. It's called The Unnamed.

I'd seen the cover for it somewhere, and it intrigued me enough to go pick up the book. At 99 cents, why not? The story fascinated me. We meet Haedyn as a child, and see some of her backstory played out. She meets Azazel, the demon, and is whisked away to become his minion. I was hooked for Haedyn's Choice before the book even came out because of that short introduction into her world.

This is an urban fantasy, based heavily in Christian metaphors and mythologies. I found it absolutely fascinating to hear the Christian tale of the fallen angels this way, with a twist of magic and hint of different planes of existence. Plus, I fell in love with Haedyn. First, because she looks so different. Us mere humans would call her an Albino, but she's more than that. She has vivid red eyes, pearl white skin, and white hair. I could picture her so clearly in my mind. She'd be outcast anywhere she went, for her looks alone. Second, I loved that she is an alpha...as in, if she were male, we'd call her an alpha male. Unused to caring for people, and used to being the strongest in the room. She's unaware of her full potential, though, and somewhere in there she does have a heart which causes her no end of trouble. Demons, after all, aren't supposed to care about us mere humans. And this human she's supposed to protect asks too many questions, gets in her personal space, and in general puts cracks in her cool, demonic exterior. Can he reach her heart? Read it!

I enjoyed this debut novel by Oliver immensely. It ends in a way that makes me eager for the next bit of Haedyn's adventure. If you like urban fantasy, Christian based stories, demons, or just a good mystery, check this out. If you're looking for steamy romance, this won't satisfy you. While there's a hint of romance, there's no real touching going on. This is good, clean, demonic fun.

3.5 out of 5 stars

After finishing Haedyn’s Choice, I am still finding it hard to put into words how I felt about the book. The only way I can begin to describe it is as a ‘comfortable’ read. It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t the best book I ever read, it was good, kind of in the middle.

I have read a lot of paranormal/fantasy/demon type books, so to have Haedyn, this kick ass albino with powers was quite refreshing in terms of something new. The only problem is I like to be able to fall in love with a main character, even if that character is a badass, you still end up falling for them. I just found it very hard to connect with Haedyn throughout, although maybe in the last few chapters I warmed to her slightly more than the rest of the book. The same went really for the other character, Lex. Although he was just a human that Haedyn was supposed to be protecting, I couldn’t find the connection with him to make the book seem better to read.

That said, there were some terrific twists to the plot of the story, and I think those are what kept me turning the pages, those and the action, as there is a lot of action running through the whole book and it is so vividly written you can play the fight scenes out easily in your head as you read.

I was slightly let down at first by the ending, but it is left open for the next book in the series, so I realised it would actually make the start of book 2 more interesting in terms of character development, and I will definitely be giving it a read as I think the ending of book 1 may lead to a way to develop more of a connection, especially to Haedyn, so I look forward to seeing how Haedyn’s story develops.

Haedyn has supernatural powers shes a half breed half angel half demon, she was summoned by a vampire to protect Lex little did Haedyn and Lex knew the vampire was Lex's brother. Read how Haedyn battles through werewolves vampires and whatever other ghouls pop up to take Lex to sacrifice. This is a very fast paced hard to put down book Jennifer Oliver has got some awesome talent I can't wait to see what is in store for the next book!

This is a very unique read! It's the first time I have read a book that is more from the demon/evil side of things. Jennifer L. Oliver creates an awesome female hero that I automatically sympathized with. Haedyn has had a hard life to say the least. An orphan since childhood then being drafted in to the army of the number two demon in the underworld. There she is groomed as a an assassin and becomes his top torturer and agent. When her master sends her on a assignment for a new client things spiral out of control. Haedyn is charged with keeping Lex safe from any and all things that want to kill him. Lex an ordinary human, stirs emotions in Haedyn that she thought she was no longer capable of having. His aggravating questions and inability to stay out of trouble drive Haedyn wild but she can't fight the feelings that are developing for him.

The writing is beautiful and Oliver creates an intriguing world hidden within our own. This is a beautiful book that is definitely worth a read!

I read the prequel to this book, The Unnamed. It sets the stage for this book. The author does and excellent job of bringing her characters to life as well as the setting for the story. It's not normally my kind of genre but it hooked me. When Haedyn's Choice came out,I had to read it. I couldn't put the book down...Oliver totally drew me into the story. I will definitely buy the next book in this series. It's a good read and I highly recommend the book.

I've been fascinated by Haedyn's character, since I first read The Unnamed. Ms. Oliver does a wonderful job of portraying the conflict within Haedyn due to her unique origins. She skillfully weaves the scenes together while giving us just enough background and emotion between the characters. This novella stands alone, but I highly recommend the two short stories that provide more info about the past. I look forward to the next book.

Haedyn's Choice is full of twists and intrigue and supernatural beings galore! I love the idea of an albino, partially blind heroine, and felt connected with the characters and the setting. There were a few minor things here and there that threw me off, but not enough to keep me away and overall a good read. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book.

"Haedyn's Choice: Book 1 of the Haedyn Chronicles"
by Jennifer L. Oliver
4 1/2 Fangs

I received this book from the author and from 'Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock'. This is my honest review.

This is a supernatural/fantasy novella with a love story thrown in. Is is well written and paced. The main characters are fleshed out. The secondary characters are interesting and serve their purpose to further the plot, which is to keep the story intriguing for the reader. The characters are complex and sympathetic.

There were only a couple of format issues. Very easy to correct. The rest of the book do not appear to have any grammar or spelling problems.

Haedyn is trying to survive in a world where she in a one of a kind supernatural being. The progeny of an angel and demon. She is known as the 'unnamed' and she works for the demon Azazel. She is his best assassin and torturer. She doesn't relish her job but it keeps her alive.

Lex is a human that witnessed the death of his brother by the hands (or should I say teeth) of a vampire. He is confused and heart broken by his brother' death. No body was ever found. Now Lex is looking for answers.

Haedyn and Lex are thrown together by design. Haedyn has been assigned to protect Lex. Both think Lex has something that Azazel, a demon of Lucifer's, wants. Together they slog through the lies to find the truth about each other and their importance to the demon.

There are twists and turns in the book with liberal use of magic. It was an enjoyable couple of hours of reading. There is a prequel to this book called "The Unnamed: a Prequel to the Haedyn Chronicles," and "Lenore's Choice: The Haedyn Chronicles 1.5." I suspect and hope there will be more "The Haedyn Chronicles."

A gripping, action packed story from beginning to end.

Haedyn’s choice was a fantastic read. I connected with Haedyn from the very beginning and was instantly drawn to her world. She’s a tough gal through and through. She doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone. However, she does have a soft side even though she’s barely aware that she has it.

The complexity of the story kept me interested the whole time and I just couldn’t put it down. Though I really have to congratulate the author for coming up with this unique story, I will say that I would have loved for it to just a little longer. And it would have been even better if Haedyn and Lex would have had more time to get to know each other better. Other than that I really don’t have any complaints about Haedyn’s choice.

I give it two thumbs up.

Haedyn's Choice blends the fantasy world with modern day. Haedyn is forced to protect a human, Lex, from her own master, the demon Azazel.

The pace soon picks up, but it's not just action, there are several sections where we come to understand Haedyn's internal and external conflicts. Occasionally the main characters seem to take serious events in the stride a little too easily, but this is fantasy after all.

The book comes to a satisfying conclusion, and there is a teaser for a second adventure in the series. I liked it.

Jennifer pens "Haedyn's Choice" in a unique and original plot filled twists and turns that just kept my attention from the beginning. Her characters, which include Angels and demons, are interesting and very well developed to the point they were believable and realistic. A great mystery with a touch of romance that should be on everyone's TBR list. I can't wait for the next book to come out now so I can find out what happens next.

If you like books on the supernatural then this is a good one for you.I've read quite a few of these type's of books and this one was better than most. Great story, lots of action and a whole host of supernatural beings. The author did a great job of creating a very unique world where all is not as it seems.Hiding in plain sight an unseen reality plays out only for those who are aware of it.Angels, demons, witches, werewolves and vampires all playing in a crazy game that makes for a most exciting read.Four stars.

Overall, it was a good read. There were some missing words here and there and a couple of grammar errors. But I loved the twists. If you love a book full of twists and turns, "Haedyn's Choice" is definitely for you. The reader got to see how Haedyn's personality and powers develop throughout the novel. The ending was completely unexpected, but seemed a little rushed to me. The book really seemed to pick up near the end. I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

5 / 5

I have read so many 4 + star books lately, I keep waiting for that one to break the amazing string of fantastic authors ... Haedyn's Choice was not the book to do that. In fact it was just the opposite, the tight story with so real (I felt like I was there) characters have set the bar just a bit higher for books that I'll review after this. Jennifer did a wonderful job taking me into Haedyn's world and I look forward to reading more of these breath taking characters.

I loved the character Haedyn! She had been lied to her whole life. Now on this assignment she had been tricked. But she would make sure this assignment would live. This story was so exciting and full of adventure. The characters were intriguing and unique. Great story
