So, I started this series by reading the second book out of the three so now I’ve jumped into this one, which is the first in The shattered rose series. Another solid read from T.L. Gray! She’s quickly becoming one of my fav contemporary Christian fiction authors.
This book follows Avery, a college sophomore who deals with a really debilitating eating disorder, spurred on by her mom, sister, and her low self esteem. When she meets her new roommate’s cousin Jake, she quickly falls under his charm and falls completely in love with him. Unfortunately, he’s not the kind of guy for relationships, so just as quickly as he appeared, he dumps her, leaving her heartbroken and questioning whether she is truly good enough for anyone to love.
In the midst of her pain, she ends up meeting Parker, who is always able to see beneath that pain and brings out the joy she has within. Through the course of their relationship she questions, again, whether she is truly worthy of this man’s love. However, with his encouragement and love, she is finally able to heal (both emotionally and from her eating disorder) and starts to move forward with her life. Unfortunately, Jake comes back, remorseful and begging for a second chance, who does she end up choosing?!
There was a really sweet aspect to this book that I loved - each chapter begins with a prayer for Avery but you don’t know who is praying it. Ultimately, (Spoiler!) you find out it’s her boyfriend’s (then fiancé’s) mother. Ughhh I just loved that reveal at the end!
