Could not put it down. Took it on vacation thinking it would be a light summer read only to discover that it's riveting. Not a bad trade off, really. The characters were well drawn, and the main character's inner monologues were believable. Even her ability to inhabit other minds was convincing. It's impossible to peg this book into any particular genre, but that's one of the things I enjoyed most. A ghost story, a mystery, a crime novel, a psychological thriller. It has elements of all of these ...more

Slow-moving to begin with. It took ages for this plot to take shape. By the middle of the book, I almost gave up. The characters are rather thinly developed and it was hard to find a place to embrace them or get interested. When the story actually started to get interesting, things bogged down again. This is a very professionally presented self-published book from an extremely promising author. The missing stars reflect a certain thinness/slight predictability of plot--basically there needed to be a subplot or two.

But it reads well. The author has a few stylistic glitches--the overuse of em-dashes, a tendency to allow the main character to ask questions in her head that ought, with tighter, more vivid writing, arise in the reader's head more naturally.

But these are minor things. I'd like t

I love to get into the minds and hearts of my characters, whether I'm writing about a saloon girl in the old west, a man who discovers the barista he's in love with is a naiad, or a ghost who haunts the house she was killed in – even though that house no longer exists. I want them to agonize over their choices, and I want what they choose - or don't choose - to
