India Johnson-Williams was born and raised on the cut throat streets of Detroit, MI also known as the Dirty Glove. She attended Wayne State University pursuing a degree in Business Mgmt. She's married and is the proud mother of one. She loves to write urban fiction because it s as close to real as you will ever get. One day she hopes to become a household name and give the game what its been missing.
I enjoyed this book. I hope Janelle comes out on top. She's a rider as well as head strong. I wish her grandmother would willing take a hand out to move to safer area but I understand where she's coming from, you live by the sword you die by the sword & she wants no part of it. I would have thought by now Ace would have had a decent stash coupled with wisdom to go legit. Well we'll see, still two more books in the series.
I read the entire book in two and a half days. I really felt like it was truly mediocre. The title did not do this book or the story line any justice. There were many punctuation errors scattered from chapter to chapter and as well as grammer errros and misspelled words. I didn't feel a connection with the main character whose name was Janelle. The story line was a bit rushed and seemed unrealistic at times. I RATE IT TWO STARS. Plus, as a reader you have no idea about how Janelle's (rep) in highschool. The story line could have been, so much better.
I give this book 4 stars. It was truly great read especially if you're familiar with the streets. Janelle was the main character amongst her boyfriend and her best friend Alicia. They were ride or die friends. They did everything together, hustled, cried, laugh, and just been loyal with one another. Janelle was a true trooper meaning she didn’t care she just wanted money. A 9 to 5 will not work for her, she wanted to be like her dad. Janelle wanted to be a Queen of the game but didn’t realize how hard it was to become respected by other bosses in the game. Her father friends tried to school her on how the game went but Janelle & Alicia put a spin on the way they made money. They stole cars, used fraudulent credit cards and wanted to get in the dope game. I loved the drama that was in the story, you really can envision Janelle’s pain and struggle. Even though she was young, she knew exactly wanted she wanted to do in life, and it was HUSTLE. Her grandmother wanted her to go to school and just live like a normal person without the glitz and glam because it would only cause her to end up like her father which was dead. Her grandmother just wanted to protect her, and she didn’t see it like that because all she could see is the finer things in life. You do have to work hard for whatever you want but legally. It was a true hood story that I've experienced before with friends that live in my neighborhood growing up. I would recommend this book, but I need to know what happens in part 2 and 3.
This wan an awesome story! It was well written and flowed great. Just enough drama to draw you in and the cliffhanger was enough to have have you hooked and waiting for the next installment. Again, great read and I'd definitely recommend it to others.
3.8/5 - Free w/ Audible* Good voice told w/ confidence, scorn, and knowledge. Interesting to know how much you’d have to shell out to a fancy foreign lawyer once a caught hustler snitches on your drug empire. A quick 2-3 hr listen. Much more sympathetic than Ice berg Slim’s Pimp. Of course few things have the steez of that, but it’s nice to hear a businesswoman’s voice involved in something so unconventionally sordid. Spoiled until 16, Janelle is advised by her father to never rely on a guy and always believe in her talents. They even have an in-home barber shop! You wouldn’t know by his loving demeanor, he’s a drug lord w/ a fiercely disapproving ma. J hardly seems to know much until ops attack her bday party to hit him where it hurts. A very sad start.
Her gram takes her in and donates all her goods to the crooked church. Even though she’s been pretty sheltered she takes to finishing her dad’s collections right away. Doesn’t hesitate to blow away rapists and wife-beaters. Jacking BMWs, blasting witnesses, buddying up to cops, a childhood crush as noble or trying to be as her father. Clashing w/ crack dealers, didn’t expect it to end in such a cliffhanger and never get back to court proceedings.
Just ok. I thought the main character was dumb and young. She's impulsive and makes bad decisions. Also, how come the grandmother didn't go after her when she ran away the 2nd time? Right after Janelle hugged her? That didn't make sense. I thought she made bad decisions bc 1) she keeping stuff from her man and 2) she not listening to the people who trying to warn her about how she stepping. How they figure out she was stealing credit cards? Something is up with that. Also, i don't trust her best friend. Janelle needs to pay attention. I'm sure she's gonna cross her.
Live by the streets, die by the streets. Poor thing. She lost everything when her parents died and she did the only thing she thought she knew, HUSTLE. Will it pay off or will she lose again?
It was fine. Not much happened, and the things that did happened did so very quickly without much detail. The story just wasn’t fleshed out enough for me.
Janelle is a young girl that has always known the good life. Her father spoiled her rotten, and she never wanted for anything. See her father was a hustler and her mother was an hustler's wife who was done for the ride. Unfortunately, it was time for her father and mother to show both their gangster, and it didn't end well.
After the death of her parents, Janelle went to live with her grandmother; which her stay wasn't anything of pleasantry. Fed up Janelle leaves the home and returns back to her old neighborhood where she hooks up with Ace her god brother. Ace immediately takes her in, and their relationship takes off. Soon, Janelle finds herself in a similar situation as her mother...It's time to let her gangster be known...but will she still be alive after it is all said and done?!!!!
***I can't wait to start pt. 2. I am ready for those unanswered questions to be answered lol***
"Gangstress" is ALL Bout that getting money type life! Bout that Bonnie & Clyde type life! That ride & die chick type life! All to live a hood fabulous type life!
This is my first India read and most definitely not my last. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this short story from beginning to end. I felt like the author did an awesome job covering lots of ground without the story seeming rushed. The short chapters makes for easy reading to one helleva cliff hanger that'll leaving you rushing to one click part 2!
This was a decent quick read. I liked the opening which kept me reading but it ended to quickly and felt like it was stretching to book 2 just because. I wanted more for the story in a Part 1. I also didn't get a sense of the main character as a boss chick and though I liked her and Ace together, it felt like they were just put together for the story. Their character development didn't give me the ride or die love chemistry that they were supposed to be feeling. Overall it was good just expected more especially based on the title.
From the very beginning, I was hooked ! From Jane sitting in that court room, I was interesting in learning about who she was and where she was heading in life! I love how India took you back to where it began for Jane ! The same way her mother was a ride or die for her father ; she was determined to be one for Ace! I loved the relationship they had and I can't wait to see what it turns into! Can't wait for part 2; great job India!
Janelle lost her parents at a young age, will the glamorous life stay the same. Well she found a way but will it stay the same. Enemies are lurking. I guess the Doescher name doesn't ring volumes anymore. She will work hard to regain her fathers throne. With her bestie by her side and the love of her life what doors will open for then. Can't wait for part 2. Good job.
Pretty good read as expected Ace and Janelle got together. Gran was an absolute trip and I don't blame Janelle for running away. I was hoping they would have found out who killed her parents but I'm definitely expecting that in part 2. Will Ace and Janelle both survive all the hating and drama and will the baby make it through all the attempts on their life as well as their struggle for survival?
Okay I was thinking that Ace had something to do with her parents But he truly love her an I am feeling them.... I like how she takes charge an command. I see people are trying her and She's given it to them. I really all the real friends that she around. Her best friend is a trip but she a true friend. Keep them coming 10 an better with the stars
This was a very good read! Read it in a few hours! But one thing I'm starting to dislike about these authors is instead of putting everything in one book, they make a part 2, part 3 and etc! Just give me everything in one book and I'm good! I'm glad part 2 and 3 are offered on kindle unlimited.
Jane Doe is the epitome of a BOSS. Listen I think of all the characters I have encountered in various types of books, She is by far one of my favorite. This book captured my attention from start to finish. Excellent, can wait until to Part 2.
I was looking for a good book about a girl in the thug life that ruled. I was not disappointed. This girl has balls as big as any dude in the game. Looking forward to the next one.
I choose this rating because it was totally awesome and I can't wait to read the second part and third... there's nothing that I dislike about it and I would deff recommend this book..
