Women in High Gear is a great little read for young women - and men, realistically - who are looking for some helpful tips and motivation from two women with decades of corporate experience behind them.
I first started reading this book because a lovely young woman named Danielle (full disclosure: she works with Anne Deeter Gallaher) asked if I would be interested in reading it. Given my 'young woman trying to make a career for herself' status I thought it would be a great idea, and I'm glad I said yes.
Anyhow, the book.
The two co-authors, Anne Deeter Gallaher and Amy Howell, both have different backgrounds on how they fell into the business world, and it's interesting to see how different paths can lead us all to relatively similar places in our careers. Both women now own their own PR/ communications firms in the US and have coined this High Gear term as a marker of success.
High Gear can mean different things to different people, and it's up to us to identify our own high gear type goals. Reading this view point was refreshing given the plethora of lists with very specific benchmarks on just about every professional and self-improvement website these days.
Most of this book are Anne and Amy's stories on how they reached their own high gears, and how when that happened they both kept moving their goals higher and higher. They also have some interesting ideas of what kind of people are good to be connected to (strategic thinkers) and programs to get involved with (like the OpEd Project), but at some fundamental level there's only so much one can learn from a 100 page case-study.
Overall Women in High Gear is worth the read (it's short, so why not) and you'll put it down at the end motivated to get yourself moving up the ol' corporate ladder. Happy reading!
Very encouraging to see women who've "made it" want to make an impact and empower other women to do the same! Great book with lots of insights for women in business and young women just starting out in the world. I so strongly recommend, I intend to buy additional copies for both my daughters! I wish I could have articulated the life lessons in this book to them regarding entering the workforce, branding yourself and unabashedly going after what you want!!!
