Jazz Guitar Technique: Breaking the Skill Barrier

Rate this book
When improvising, what your mind hears is more often than not determined by what your body can reproduce on your instrument. Much of your conception as an improviser is determined by your technique. If you can't play certain types of ideas, you are simply not going to conceive of them while you are improvising. Even if you could, it wouldn't matter, since you couldn't play them anyway. This book presents serious chops-building technical studies for single note lines and chords. Plus, the examples feature a lot of harmonic content. The material is written in standard notation.

The first approach is really different than other books.
Not many words, many notes. In a first time, It seems like you arrive in an foreign country.
For my part, I try to play some parts but I ask myself : « what is that ? ».
In spite of this feeling, I continue and discover what follow.
1. The time is necessary for every human progress.
2. When you give these examples a chance, you perceive wonderful lands. And there are yours ! Because you appropriate the meaning of the printed material with your soul.
3. Under the notes, Andrew speaks of freedom which is the essence of jazz. He gives us a personal new manner to PLAY music. It’s audacious and that is also jazz..
4. With time, I discover that I like this book more than others.

To learn with a positive and active method, I use the software Finale where I enter the different pages. I also create a tablature for every score. Perhaps it could help ? Don’t hesitate to contact me. ( top123partez@hotmail.com )

I'm currently making my way (slowly) through this book. Right now, I'm working on fingering exercises, which is something the book is not short on, but they are exercises that help both with finger agility and also with tempo, rhythm and phrasing. Very straightforward and clean presentation.
