How Is a Missing Military Working Dog Related to Two Local Fires?

Snuggle with your trusty hound and settle into a small-town mystery in book 6 of the Gone to the Dogs series.

Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez’s romance has cooled. He is busy working as a researcher at the vet school, and she’s busy with her restaurant and opening an antique shop. What Lane hasn’t told her is his PTSD, which manifests mostly with nightmares, makes him believe he’s damaged goods. But that is about to change when he meets a stray pup that acts a lot like a military working dog.

When a tornado hits Brenham, there is damage in the downtown area and a fire is ignited in Nora’s new store. A Belgian Malinois dog is seen at the fire and later Lane sees him at a wedding venue where an explosion occurs. Not long after, a second explosion rocks Brenham and sends Nora and Lane on a hunt for the person responsible. Will the pair find the guilty party before more damage is done to the city’s landmarks? And will Lane find the words to tell Nora how much he loves her before it’s too late?

My personal Rating- Four Stars

I’m so sad that this series is over! It’s been my most anticipated book releases for the last couple of years and they all have received at least a four-star rating from me. I’ve loved all the characters, the Texas charm, and, of course, the dogs! It’s been a really good series and I’m sad it’s over now.

When I had first seen this book online, I couldn’t remember seeing about this main couple in any of the prior books, but Goodreads had an old description, so that was throwing me! Nora is actually Cassidy’s chef friend we met in a prior book, so we see all mentions (if not have actual conversations with) all of the characters from the other books in the series. This book was a bit different from the rest, though, because we get Lane’s point of view. I’m glad we did because just from Nora’s perspective, I could see why she was frustrated with him, but because of his point of view, I understood more of where he was coming from. All in all, a good read with a mystery that kept me guessing with all the possible suspects!

This sixth of a cozy mystery series set in small town Brenham, Texas is focused on PTSD. Veterinarian Lane Bishop has trouble sleeping at night due to vivid dreams of his time serving in the Air Force. While he loves Nora, he doesn't want to burden her with marriage and a lifetime of dealing with his PTSD.

After years of dating, Nora wants to take their relationship to the next level. In frustration, she considers breaking things off with Lane even though she loves him.

On top of their personal struggles, the town is dealing with unusual crimes. Then, a service dog and cat surface without a clue of where they came from.

An enjoyable cozy with a good cast of characters. My favorite character was Pal.

My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

A New Leash on Life was an interesting cozy mystery.

At first I was very frustrated that Nora stuck it out so long with Lane and kept giving him chances. But as the story unfolded and we got to see more of Lane’s thoughts and struggles, I had more understanding but still felt frustrated with the lack of communication.

The mystery around the missing working dog and who he belongs to will keep readers interested to, together with Nora, find the answers.

At the end all questions were answered and all frustrations sorted out with many happy endings.

I love this idea of a dog-centered mystery series! I've been really trying to find something of the "cozy mystery" genre that hits my sweet spot.

That part was really interesting and I enjoyed Lane's perspective and seeing how Pal changed things for him.

As far as the rest...I kept feeling like I was missing something. I just could not get into Nora and Lane, mostly because of Nora. I know it was Lane's secret driving their inability to move forward, but I just...I wasn't sold on them as a couple. I never could really "root" for them, even though I WAS rooting for Lane to get his priorities right and head screwed on straight.

The mystery also just wasn't...what I was looking for, I guess. It kept feeling a touch convoluted for me. All in all, it was a quick read, and it kept my attention.

I received a copy through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading New Leash on Life by Kathleen Y'Barbo. It was a fun mystery and romance all in one. An unexpected twist that took me off guard.

Will Lane and Nora end up together? What will happen to Pal, the loveable Pooch?

If you love cozy mysteries, this is a must read. This is book 6 of the Gone to the Dogs series.

've liked all the books in this Gone to the Dogs series. I found them to be heartwarming, entertaining and fun. This installment is no different. I was particularly impressed by the section of the story where a missing military working dog was brought into the storyline. I liked how there was a conundrum to solve. I liked how the author talked about PTSD and how Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop received unexpected healing from the military working dog. Their bond grew. It turned Lane’s life around.

Nora Hernandez, who is occupied with running her restaurant and getting ready to launch an antiques store, is the second important character. When a tornado strikes Brenham, things start to get a little crazy for her and the community. The downtown area is severely damaged. When a second explosion rocks Brenham, things get suspenseful. This event brings Lane and Nora closer. They had been dating for some time now. Due to Lane’s PTSD issues, which he has never been willing to discuss with Nora; their relationship has been strained. Since Lane started taking care of this military dog, he feels more at ease. Is there any connection between that and the military's training of dogs?

The author’s love of animals’ shines through the entire series. It left an impression on me. This story has a delightful ending. This makes for fun escape and one that would work well for your next book club pick.

This one took a while to get to. I got approved, and then I realized I should probably read the other 5 books in the series first 😆 That was a chore in itself, but I made it through!

I loved this series. The dogs, the faith, and the mysteries were great! I am sad that the series is over!

Who knew entering a series on the sixth book could be so seamless. Having read and enjoyed "New Leash on Life", I know want to go back and read all five other books in the "Gone to the Dogs" series. This novel leaned much more heavily on the love story than on the mystery which was completely fine with me. I am not a huge mystery reader so this book struck just the right balance of romance and mystery. Nora and Lane were such an interesting couple to get to know. They are relatable, cute, sweet, frustrating, and I cheered for them the entire time. The dog is so stinking cute it made me want to go and cuddle my own doggo every time I sat down to read this sweet story. I say sweet but there were definetely the fair share of sketchy characters. But once again, the mystery plot line took a back seat and really did not take center stage until about 75% way through the book.

The ending was very satisfying.... even though the random cat still has me scratching my head

This is the 3rd book I have read in this series and I loved this story as much as the others!

I'm a big fan of any story with a dog but this one was different. The Belgian Malinois named Pal captivated my heart from the moment he came into the story. Everything from his soulful eyes to his therapeutic touch to help a character with PTSD drew me in and kept me reading for hours.

I love that this addresses the very real effect PTSD has on our veterans and their families. It shows how it affects relationships and ignites hope that there is a way to overcome the battle inside.

The romance and mystery of this story was also well done and I love the unique challenge that these two faced with each other.

Thank you for another great read in this series. For those of you who have not read the other books, this book can stand alone but I highly recommend you check out the others!

A military trained dog on the loose, a tornado, a fire, strange inconsistencies in the grocery orders, and more cause Nora’s life to be far more eventful than normal in this next installment in the Gone to the Dogs series. Readers will enjoy the variety of twists and turns in this story. A little romance, some personal growth, some suspense, some heart touching moments, and some fun are all wrapped up in this book. This book could stand alone, but readers who have read other books in this series will enjoy reading more about beloved characters from the previous books. I highly recommend this book.

This is the first I've read of this series and it does stand alone. Fun book featuring Nora, who owns Simple Eats and just bought the part of the building next door, her boyfriend Lane, who's DVM, but works on the research side and my favorite, Pal, a Belgian Malinois who comes into Lane's life. Having a trained dog, that's as fun as he is, is a big bonus. These animals work hard and are smart, and Pal, is no exception. A tornado, fire, and a bombing keep things hopping as Nora, Lane and few others try to figure out the culprit.

What's not to like about this book? It's based in Brenham, Texas, has dogs-- well 1 special dog named Pal, a rare tornado and a couple of bomb explosions. Also lots of folks who are not who they say they are!! Plus Nora and Lane are trying to work out a relationship. Will there be a wedding in the future? Will a bomber be exposed? And will Pal get to stay with the man who really needs him ? This one is a great read and while most of this is fiction Brenham is not and it's home to Blue Bell ice cream!! You can't beat that.

Book 6 of the,Gone to the Dogs series revolves around Pal who is an retired military dog who goes missing. Lane and Nora's romance is slowly moving along but sure could use some communication. The story is sweet light hearted fun. There are some twists thrown in here and there. I have enjoyed this series and am really glad I read this one. Another great story! I loved following the story of Lane and Nora. I particularly fell in love with Pal and loved learning more about military dogs. Lane's PTSD was sad to think about and disappointing that he couldn't share that with his friends and family.

Thanks so much to netgalley and Barbour publishing for the arc. The opinions are my own.

I was lucky enough to get this book as an ARC. Another gone to the dogs mystery. What a good easy read it was. Although you could easily figure out the players in the mystery it wasn't until the very end that it all fit together, I didn't guess what was happening which for me is a strangely odd scenario but a good one. I will be getting the rest of the collection to read.

New Leash on Life” has intertwined narratives of Nora and Lane’s developing romance and a small-town mystery set against the backdrop of threatening weather and strange crimes.

The characters are well-rounded, and the author’s descriptive writing put me right into the setting, from Nora’s bustling restaurant to the charming portrayal of animal rescue efforts. The focus on Lane and Nora’s relationship dynamics overshadows the cozy mystery aspect a bit—at least compared to the other books I’ve read in this series. That’s not a bad thing though…just different.

I like that Lane’s PTSD is addressed, giving the story depth and believability, and I understood why he’d feel the way he did about himself. That doesn’t mean I didn’t get a bit frustrated by him. I connected with Nora and her frustrations as well.

Overall, this fast read offers an enjoyable blend of mystery, romance, humor, and an unwavering love for animals. Pal the dog was a standout character, and I enjoyed the witty details and heartwarming ending.

First Line: The sun had just dipped behind the collection of buildings that made up the downtown district of Brenham, Texas.

New Leash on life is #6 in this series and I had no issues following the story even though I had not read any of the other books in the series. I am sure if I would have read the others I would have understood the back story of the other characters better but I enjoyed this one as a stand alone all the same.

This cozy mystery is about restaurant owner Nora and her boyfriend veterinarian and military veteran Lane as well as Pal the Belgian Malinois. There are a few twists and turns in the mystery and the story kept me interested throughout. It does have a slight Christian bent to the story without being preachy as well as a secondary chaste romance story line.

If you are ready for a light mystery with likable people and a great canine character as well I encourage you to pick this one up.

I loved this book so much and I think it’s my favorite of the series. Pal the dog was just the best addition and I loved reading the mention of the real life dog he was based on listed on the acknowledgment page. I was only a little familiar with Nora’s character and I’m pretty sure Lane wasn’t in it much before if at all, but these two characters were just so awesome and special. The end of this book was the absolute best! Look at me gushing over a book that’s not a murder mystery, lol.

This is the only series I’ve ever read that’s come even close to interesting me that consistently doesn’t have a murder as the case. Maybe it’s because of all the little side mysteries and secrets that’ve been parts of each book. But just like with all cozy mysteries, the good guys win and there’s a happily ever after…or more. I’m pretty sure this was scheduled to be the last book, but I’d happily read more in this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Barbour Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

New Leash on Life Kathleen Y’Barbo is a Christian Fiction / Cozy Mystery. This book is the sixth book in the Gone to the Dogs series. Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez take the lead in this story, but the rest of your favorite characters from earlier books still appear in this book.

Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez’s romance is slowing down. Working as a researcher at a vet school and caring for his father occupies Dr. Lane Bishop’s time. Nora finds herself trying to decide if pursuing a relationship with Lane is worth it or not.

With a tornado, explosions, and a mysterious dog that appears, a lot happens in this story. I loved how the author developed the characters and storylines. The suspense, twists and turns, and the relationship between Lane and Nora develop. I found myself unable to put this book down.

While you could read this book on its own, I definitely recommend reading the entire series so you can appreciate the storyline and get to know the major characters. So, if you enjoy stories involving dogs, prior military servicemembers, families, romance, friendship, and more, check out this book and the entire series for yourself.

So, if you enjoy Christian fiction and cozy mysteries, check out this book and the rest of the series for yourself. I definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

It’s amazing all the compelling plot ideas these authors have come up with for this fun series featuring veterinarians and animals, especially dogs. And although each book can stand on its own, but I suggest reading the former five in order since the continuing characters appear in each book. This novel also includes another type of vet—veterans, including one suffering with PTSD, along with a lost dog that appears to be ex-military too. In addition, the vet main character struggles with his love life, disappointing his hope-to-be fiancée. The story’s drama and the intrigue will draw readers in as it dishes up a fun read. By the way, there is a restaurant in the tale too. And why are there explosions in Brenham, where the series is set? The characters and setting seem so realistic. NEW LEASH ON LIFE (GONE TO THE DOGS SERIES BOOK 6)
by Kathleen Y'Barbo

I don't know what it was about this book, but I was immediately drawn to it, I was unable to put it down and read it straight through. I think the subject matter was the draw. Highly recommend.

Nora Hernandez owns a farm-to-table restaurant, that has been her life's dream. She recently purchased an antique shop next door to the restaurant and is patiently waiting for her boyfriend Lane Bishop, DVM to propose.

A mysterious runaway dog suddenly appears, Lane is able to catch the animal and thinks it is a MWD, or Military War Dog. The dog has been highly trained, he is sure that it belongs somewhere. He checks the dog over at the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic, where he's temporarily helping out.

These are sweet, inspirational, mystery, and romance books. I have read several, but this one drew my interest the most.

I received a complimentary copy of #NewLeashOnLife from #BarbourPublishing I was not obligated to post a review.

I enjoy suspense stories with dogs, and this was no exception. Nora Hernandez has just bought the antique store next to her restaurant as she considers breaking up with her long-time workaholic boyfriend, veterinarian Lane Bishop. But his father's broken leg, a tornado in town near her restaurant, a mysterious fire in the empty apartment above the antique store, and a stray MWD slow the impending breakup.
This was a pleasant cozy with a love story and a dog. A must enjoy read!

I loved this delightful cozy mystery and its series! Most of the friends are co-workers at Lone Star Veterinary Clinic in Brenham, Texas, and affiliated with Second Chance Dog Rescue. Mari and Parker, vet techs at Lone Star and now married, had worked together to start Mari’s dog rescue. Most of the main characters are Christians.

Nora co-owns a building with her best friend, Cassidy, the office manager at Lone Star. Nora’s restaurant is on the street level and Cassidy lives upstairs. Nora just bought the store next door and was deciding how to best use it. After escrow closed, she found a sweet orange tabby cat inside who wanted to go home with her. At first, she wanted to find the owner, and within a very short time, she was so attached that she hoped no owner came forward!

Nora and Lane have been dating for several years. Lane is a veterinarian and a veterinary researcher. He loves it, but working very long hours in another town keeps them apart. Nora does not know why Lane has not yet proposed. Lane has something going on he will not talk about, even with Nora. She is ready to break up with him. They love each other, but his absences and seeming unwillingness to commit are too frustrating.

One night when he was in town, a huge dog ran past them into the woods. It looked like a Belgian Malinois, a breed often used in the military. That night, a tornado tore through the town. The upstairs apartment in the building Nora just bought was on fire, thought to have been caused by an explosion. Nobody was renting the apartment, but the firemen saw that someone was living there and caused the explosion. Fortunately, she had no tornado damage.

Within days, the two veterinarians at Lone Star were getting married. Lane’s father, a retired vet, was going to fill in during their honeymoon. The evening before he was to start, he fell and broke his leg. Lane took time off from his research position to oversee his father’s care, be close to Nora, and take the two-week fill-in position. While he was at the clinic, he had the help of a paramedic picking up side jobs.

Lane began caring for the big, loveable pup when they found him running loose at the wedding venue. The dog had no chip or the required tattoo of a military war dog. Days later, an explosion at the wedding venue destroyed the cottage used by brides and their bridesmaids.

Nora, Lane, and their friends have attempted to find who was staying at Nora’s new building, who set the fires/ explosions, and searching for the dog’s owner. Lane and the pup, who he called Pal, quickly bonded, so he did not look forward to giving him up.

I loved being back with these friends! It was exciting to see them walk out their faith rather than just talk about it. I was torn, like Nora, about whether she should break up with Lane; I do understand why he kept his secret, though. Nora, Lane and their friends tried to find who was in the apartment and used the explosives, even after they ran out of suspects. I was only slightly surprised with who really did it as I had pointed a finger in that direction more than once. Part of the resolution totally surprised me, though. I was very pleased with the ending, and highly recommend this novel to teens and adults who appreciate well-written Christian cozy mysteries with strong friendships, dogs, and romance.

From a thankful heart: I received an uncorrected copy of this novel from NetGalley and Barbour, through Celebrate Lit, and this is my honest review.

NEW LEASH ON LIFE is a story about a couple who want more but don't know how to get to their happily-ever-after, and a mystery involving an unwanted tenant and a dog. There's plenty of involvement from family and friends as well as other side characters, with much of the spotlight stolen by some adorable animals. Fans of the author, inspirational cozy mysteries and animal lovers may enjoy this one.

I liked both of the main characters from the start. Of course they were a bit frustrating as they hedged on what they needed to do to grasp what they wanted. They're a cute couple who had some things to do and some character development to go through. It was humorous in parts seeing their friends and particularly Nora's family try to push them a bit. I loved the animals in this story! "Pal" was a very fun addition as was Nora's sweet cat, both of which I hoped wouldn't have homes so they could stay with these characters.

The story itself meandered. There were brief glimpses of a mystery/crime but as a reader you don't see much of that until the second half of the book and it doesn't take the main spotlight until towards the end. The main focus was more on Lane and Nora in what's happening in their lives and their relationship. I wasn't sure all the time if I wanted them to end up together as I was frustrated with them both and the fact that neither of them would talk to each other honestly or trust each other fully. That sets some serious red flags about a relationship. However, the romance is a sweet addition to the story. The inspirational element is very light but still present in these characters' lives. I really liked the premise for the story and series and thought the involvement of pets was delightful.

I did have some issues with the book. The dialogue, characters' reactions and general flow of the story was pretty rough. One example would be when Lane and Nora were having a phone conversation that was a bit tense and Nora enforced to Lane that he needed to be on time and "Lane's response was laughter. Actual side-splitting laughter." and then Nora is mad and Lane asks if he said something wrong. I was so confused as to why Lane acted as he did and how one character's words led to the others. There were several places like this consistently throughout that needed some editing and rewriting to convey what the author wanted and that also made sense. Lots of parts that should have been taken out as they weren't pertinent and other parts re-written to flow better and feel more natural. There were also several things that didn't feel realistic or make sense to me. The mystery wasn't weaved through as well as I would have liked and felt kind of planted. One minor issue was having not read the previous five books. There were a lot of side characters introduced and involved in the story and they weren't all necessary to it nor were their presence always completely explained or properly introduced. I think those characters could have been handled differently for those new to the series.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a cute read. I felt like there needed to be quite a bit more developed and edited, but the plot was entertaining and the characters likable. Previous books in the series are very loved and fans have enjoyed this last installment as well.

New Leash on Life is a fun and heartwarming story as well as part of a wonderful series that you are not going to want to miss. I’ve had the pleasure of reading all the books in the series. And they’re all equally amazing! I’m an animal lover. And because of that I really have enjoyed this series. Each one features at least one exemplary animal.

In this book, our featured animal is a dog. And not just any dog but a military working dog who has retired. He’s a Belgian Malinois. I didn’t know much about this breed until last year around this time when we adopted one. He’s an ex-working dog too. Though he was a service dog. He was a PTSD service dog for a former military man. Our guy is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix. We’re well-versed in German Shepherds here. But adding in this mix has been unique.

I can attest that they’re extremely motivated. He’s high energy. He’s got an extreme drive and needs to be doing something. Our guy is named Rudy and we’re immensely enjoying him.

The dog in the book is Pal. And I see a lot of similarities between him and our dog Rudy. It makes sense once I learned that the author has had experience with friends adopting an ex-working dog. They know! Please know that almost everything dog-related in the book is true! They’re super smart, energetic, motivated, and oh-so-loving.

AND THERE’S MORE!
The book doesn’t solely focus on the dog. There are two main human characters as well. However, the dog totally stole the show for me.

While the book is a cosy mystery, it definitely has its own share of mystery and suspense that will make you want to keep reading and not miss a word!

I highly recommend this book. In fact, I highly recommend the entire series. They’re clean and fun with enough mystery and suspense to keep you going but not enough to make you hide away. Oh, and there’s some fun romance as well.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Nora Hernandez is the owner of Simply Eats in Brenham TX and loves her life and friends, most of whom work at the Lone Star Vet Clinic and Second Chance Rescue. She has been dating Dr. Lane Bishop a Veterinarian Researcher at Texas A&M for four years and there has been no movement towards the next level, i.e., putting a ring on it. She loves Lane but she wants a husband and children. Lane is hiding something about himself that is the reason he hasn't proposed to Nora in spite of knowing that she is the one for him. While their romance drama is going on there is an explosion and tornado that hits downtown Brenham. Nora's restaurant has escaped damage but the building next door that she just purchased has had a fire. Also there is stray dog that looks to be a German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois running loose.

While at a friend's wedding, Nora and Lane are able to catch the dog which is Belgian Malinois. Lane takes him home with him and names him Pal. He feels he is a military dog but has no tattoo or chip. While trying to find his owner, the wedding venue has had an explosion. Two explosions in a short time in their small town? Nora and Lane set out to discover the culprit.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. My favorite is Pal, the Belgian Malinois followed closely by Lane's dad, Dr Bishop, and the casserole ladies! They made the story so enjoyable for me! I had trouble with Nora's turmoil about why Lane has not proposed and should she break up with him. After 4 years, I think it's time to have a heart-to-heart talk and not just break up with him. Nora could have been more open to knowing something was going on with Lane. I applaud the author for discussing the topic of PTSD with military veterans.

It's a good mystery. It does have quite a few secondary characters which can be hard to keep track of at times.
It's an enjoyable read for a cozy fall afternoon.
Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for the chance to read this book and give my honest opinions.

I LOVE a Cozy Mystery book and I definitely like stories involving dogs. New Leash on Life by Kathleen Y’Barbo is Book 6 in the Gone to the Dogs Series. I have read the series from the beginning and have been enjoying the series. Janice Thompson and Kathleen Y'Barbo have been alternating the writing of the books.

We are back in Brenham, Texas for Nora and Lane's story. Dr. Lane Bishop is a Air Force Veteran and now works at the Vet School as a Researcher. Nora runs a Restaurant and is in the process of opening an Antique Store next to her Restaurant. The couple has been so busy with life that their relationship has taken a "back burner". Lane has PTSD from his time in the service. He has lots of nightmares and the nightmares have him second guessing himself. Life really gets interesting when a Tornado damages downtown Brenham, including a fire in Nora's Antique Shop. The Wedding Venue in town is hit with an explosion and soon after another explosion happens in town. In the midst of all the trouble, a small dog, Pal, is found. Lane immediately takes to him as he looks like a Military Dog. Lane and Nora are now determined to figure out who is causing destruction in Brenham. Will they find the person who is causing destruction and stop the person? Will Pal and Lane become friends and will Pal stay with Lane? Will Lane be able to tell Nora his feelings for her and will their relationship flourish?

I truly LOVE this series and this book was just as good as the others. Lane and Nora are GREAT characters and their LOVE Story is similar real life couples. I LOVE that the author addresses the PTSD of Veterans. Veterans go through a lot during service and to have an author address the issue with eloquence and honor is amazing. Nora is a sweet woman and has goals in life for her career. Many twists and turns and Mystery in this book make is a SWEET COZY READ! The books are part of a series but also read great as a Standalone book. I am looking forward to reading all the books in this series! FANTASIC BOOK!

I have been enjoying this whole series, Gone to the Dogs Mysteries, but this one just might be my favorite yet. Nora already has her man, Lane, as they have been dating for a while. Unfortunately, it has been a while and Nora is ready to move on to the next logical step. Lane loves her, or at least that is what he says, he is just a little too busy and not good at keeping his promises. However, since it has been a while, Nora has been slowly moving on. Buying up some property and opening a restaurant and making other plans. If she can't have her dream of a family of her own right now, she will have her dream of her business. She has already broken up with Lane in her mind if not in her heart, she just needs to tell him.

Lane does love Nora very much and he wants to marry her. But he feels he is damaged goods with his PTSD. He is even too ashamed to tell her. So, he buries himself in his work and research all the while knowing that he is disappointing and hurting the woman he loves.

Then the town of Brenham gets really busy. First with a tornado that drops down with enough damage to keep everyone busy, but also with some suspicious fires. Nora's new shop is the target of that fire. What is going on for she would really like to get back to her property and cleaning it up.

This story had a lot of twists and turns and a dog and cat that show up unannounced. Who they are and where they are from adds to the mystery. I really liked Nora and her longsuffering with Lane. I completely understood how her patience was wearing thin with him. Lane was a good guy and I liked him, I just wanted him to open his eyes and see not only what he was missing out on but what he was making Nora miss out on too. The tornado thread really got to me too, especially since my town experienced one this summer for the first time ever!

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
