Unconventional Warrior: Memoir of a Special Operations Commander in Afghanistan
This fascinating look at the life of a modern-day professional soldier gives the reader an inside view of the deadly global war on terror. Herd argues that conflicting political objectives have muddied the way forward for the on-the-ground commanders and thus threaten the prospect of any real victory in Afghanistan. He uses everyday stories to make his points: "One of the local leaders pointed to his wrist and said to my interpreter, 'the Americans have all the watches but we have all the time.' That made a lasting impression on me.

Reading this book you will encounter a man who clearly believes his own BS, the terms Great-Guy, Pray, UM and his own credo'through, by, with' hundreds of times. You will also encounter an SF officer of an Artillery Background who does not seem to know how a mortar actually works. This would have been a minor bug bear only it is one of a stream of vaguely explained facts and episodes throughout this book. I am sure somethings can be chalked up to secrecy of being SF or whatever but this is one of the worst books I have read since 'Peacekeepers' by Dan Harvey or Comapany of Heroes by Mike Durand.
So if bland non descript repetition and the action of a spinster at a wedding is what you are after this book is for you.
