A very enjoyable, coming-of-age story.

Dax grows up in an abusive home, he is eventually placed in foster care. He lands with a decent family in high school and falls in love with a girl from the right side of the tracks. They experience all their firsts together, but know their goals for the future don’t align.

So began a whirlwind teenage romance that lasted all the way to senior year. They were young, certainly, but they were in love.

I really enjoyed his growing relationship with the president of the MC club. Because this book is a prequel, it ends with the beginning of Dax’s journey into the MC club and getting his cut.

This story is about teens in high school, but there is graphic sexual intimacy on page. A heads up if you need that hea, it isn’t here.

I found a new boyfriend, his name is Dax! I know he's only 17 in this book, but it was the perfect intro to the Riding the Lines Series . We got to see all the shit he had to deal with, to make him the man he is today; proudly earning him his cut as a member of the Phantoms, his new and only family.

Dax turned out to be a yummy alpha who has proven to be a lover and a fighter. Can't believe he got me all worked up even with his fade to black scenes ... Totally going to jump in and read the rest.

5 Stars!!!

What a great introduction to a series and I got it for free on Amazon!! I even got a little teaser for the first book in the series! I got to really dive into Dax's head, it was like watching an alpha in the making. I loved it and I just know that Satin and Steel is gonna be great!!!

I really enjoyed reading about Dax's early life, how innocent he was. And then how he slowly becomes this confident man. He grew up hard, never knowing a mother's love. But when he meets the president of The Phantom's its like he's come home.

A lot of us got stuck with a shitty set of cards. That don't mean you lay down and take it. It means you stand up stronger.

He learns a lot from Crow who is almost like a father figure to him. Crow understands him because he knows where he comes from. Crow teaches Dax about family, he and his crew become Dax's family.

I have learned that blood doesn't make family. Maybe being in a club is in my blood and maybe I'll never know.

This story is all about how Dax becomes the man he is. It's a sneak peak into the mind of a young boy who will become a strong and confident alpha male.

I am making myself a solid promise, to create my own code of honor and live by it as best I can, like Crow did. No bird flies a straight line, but I've landed here, and here is where I'm gonna stay. I'm gonna live this life right.

"No bird flies a straight line, but I've landed here, and here is where I'm gonna stay. I'm gonna live this life right. Never forget where I came from. That's all I can do. That's what earning this cut means..." - Dax Earning the Cut

If you have read Satin and Steel, it may have crossed your mind on the how's and why's in Dax's life. Well this novella will helpfully help you understand the beautifully conflicted hot alpha male and the way his mind somewhat works. For those who had issues with Satin and Steel being closely influenced by SoA (Sons of Anarchy), hopefully this novella will put it in a different light. While the beginning is a tad slow, it is worth the whole read to get to the end. The story is told entirely from Dax's point of view.

From the beginning I have to say that it's a little slow. There is a reason for this, and the reason is important. The beginning is told from a small child's point of view. Keeping this in mind is important because when you are small, descriptive abilities and words are very limited. Dax's childhood isn't anything less than heartbreaking. To see what he went through is hard to take, especially if you are a mother. There were times I wanted to reach through the book and jack slap his mother.

As we move onto his teenage years and see how he views the world after growing up in the system. We also see how his love for Trish started and how it tentatively ended. Also while I disliked Trish in SS I have to say it may have helped my opinion of her, but didn't totally alleviate the irritation I have with her for both her assumptions and expectations of Dax. You will either love or hate the relationship, but it is the type of young love that is almost destined for the end it received. I have to say that this seriously evoked some emotion from me, as I couldn't agree with the decisions made by Trish in the end, although I understood the reasons behind it.

When Dax joined the Phantoms and the feelings and longing behind it was interesting and touching. The way he earned his cut was pure heartbreak. It's hard to describe the interactions without giving to much away, as it is with most of this book. Again I will state that this is worth the read. It will separate in your mind SoA and SS. The relationships in Dax's personal life are so different than those in SoA, it's like apples and oranges. All in all it's a good standalone read that will compel you to read Satin and Steel if you haven't already. After reading it, I reread SS just because it evoked that emotion in me. You can see where Dax would be conflicted about what his place is due to his upbringing, but that's in the next story (and why you should get it).

All in all I give this novella 4.5 bookmarks. Read it, you'll love it.

*I was given an ARC for an honest and true review. But I bought it too. ;)*

I quite enjoyed this short intro into Dax's story.

We get to learn how he meets and falls in love with Trish and how he becomes part of the Phantoms MC.

Earning the Cut (Riding the Line #0.5)
By: Jayna Vixen
5/5 stars

This is the prequel novella to Satin & Steel (Riding the Line #1). It is told from Dax’s point of view and is his history of childhood, adolescence and how he came to be a prospect and later a patched brother of the Phantoms MC.

Dax Jamison grew up an unwanted child. First neglected by his mother and abused by her and the men in her life, until he was taken away and then was bounced from foster home to foster home. Dealing with the abusive foster homes and manipulative foster parents sharpened an edge that Dax had to him.

No one cared about him or stood up for him. He was used to being on his own, alone in the world. Finally placed in a good foster home, he was still wary of when his time would be up, he never felt fully at home with the Bodeckers. Dax never opened up, to anyone or anything.

Trish Wagner changed some things for Dax. He actually started to do things differently and Trish was the cause of the good change in him. However, her parents being from old money, super-strict and her college plans of becoming a doctor set them at odds in their future plans.

As much as this is Dax’s back story, it is also of a first love & first heartbreak. All the things that shaped Dax into the man he is today.

The only thing I found somewhat annoying was all the “instinctively” and it gets a little tiresome to continually read it as well. Dax is just an instinctive man evidently.

Since I’ve seen some reviews complain about this being SOA fan fiction, I thought I would add this acknowledgment. In the author’s acknowledgements, she does say that the Riding the Line series is loosely inspired by the hit TV show Sons of Anarchy and also thanks the show’s creator & director Kurt Sutter and the cast & crew of SOA who inspired her to write this series.

Motorcycle club romance is a genre that I'm just getting into and had some definite hits and misses with. Earning the Cut sounded like it would be an interesting read, since it shows how Dax got into the MC in the first place and probably what drove the love interests apart before they're reunited in the main series. Well, what I got was a story that was super awkward to read because the tone simply doesn't match what was happening on the page. It also read more like explicit Young Adult for the most part rather than New Adult, which is also a bit awkward.

The main problem with Earning the Cut was that the voice sounds super young. This may have to do with the first chapter being about Dax when he was just six years old, and then just continuing with a similar tone. Most of it takes place when he's seventeen, but it never sounded like it was New Adult or even Young Adult. It just felt young, almost like a Middle Grade book about teenagers (complete with an animal rescue that makes all of Dax's dreams come true!), with sex and swearing. Like I said, awkward. The dialogue also didn't feel authentic; more like what an adult thinks teenagers sound like.

Earning the Cut was just weird. It probably would have worked out better if it had been from Dax's first person POV rather than third person. Or maybe, it would have been worse, since his inner dialogues were off too. I like the idea of seeing how someone joins a MC, and I liked how Dax and Trish parted, but this introduction doesn't make me want to keep reading even though I have the next book.

This was really good for as short as it was. Actually better than Satin and Steel. I am anxious to see what book two has to offer. I love Dax so much more now. Maybe I wish I would have read this first.

This a really short Motorcycle Club novella a prequel to the Riding the Line series. It's basically outlines the life struggles of Dax as an adolescent. There is romance in this but it's secondary to grit of this tale. I am very interested in delving more into this series.

I very much enjoyed Earning the Cut. The author Jayna Vixen did a fantastic job in developing the characters. I always enjoy starting a book with no expectations, or maybe even with a preconceived story line. But then the author makes it interesting by beginning the story and going places not expected. Also, even though this was about the beginning of a riders life in a MC club, there are still several twists and unexpected events to keep it interesting.

My preferences are to have as much graphic sex (porn) in a story. This book is definitely not a porno, but the author included enough hot sex scenes to keep me interested. Who doesn't love young love?

I very much enjoyed the first book in the series. However, I awarded only 4 stars for the reason there are several typos, miswording's, incomplete phrases, and confusing connections. These misses did not take away from the story. So all in all a great read!

Earning the cut, is a short novel that holds no bars! Born to a pair of sadistic a`holes. Dax learns not only that he can be loved for the first time, make friends and do well in school till things go off track in a way that he finally gives up on finding a purpose to his life. He also dreams his whole childhood about a motorbike and a father long forgotten until he finds family that he has always wanted with in a MC. The only issue that i have is that this novel is a cliff hanger and is (short).

MY THOUGHTS~
I chose to purchase and read this series because I absolutely love biker romance! I liked the idea of a prequel that was out by the time I started the series so I could read it first.
I chose to review this as a series review rather than three individual reviews, because I read the entire series straight through. All the books flowed very well together and transitioned from one to the next very smoothly. I'm not sure it would do the individual books justice if I attempted to review them separately at this point. Had I been able to put them down in between books rather than jump right into the next, separate reviews may have been a possibility! Kudos to Jayna Vixen for drawing me in and hooking me all the way through to the end!
I thoroughly enjoyed this series from the prequel all the way through to the end of book two. It was captivating. The story line was unique in itself rather than the same old tired romance. I think that's part of what draws me to biker "romance". This author has a gift for creating unique situations.
I have nothing negative or even critical to add to this review. I was extremely impressed with this series. I can't wait for more!

This book is the prequel for the series Riding the line ,,,, I really enjoyed this novella ,,, this is Dax's story ,,, where it all began for him

He has been dealt such a bad at the start of his life

Scared both inside and out taken away from his abusive home and jumping from different foster homes ,,, never feeling a sense of belonging and feeling like an outcast ,,,,

Until Trish ,,,

She comes into his life ,,, and for the first time he has someone that cares for him ,,, and he cares for her too ,,,

BUT they are from different worlds and neither want to give up on the other but at the sometime knowing that they eventually may have to

Dax wants a family but has never had that,,, but that all changes with a chance meeting with a bald cat ,,, life changes for Dax and he now belongs somewhere

As ever life is never simple and a gut feeling that has plagued Dax for so long finally becomes reality when he wakes from his sleep one night ,,, life takes a turn ,,,

But Dax definitely EARNED HIS CUT!!!!!!

I enjoyed this story about how a young man became a biker gang member. From abused boy to foster teen, falling in love with a girl his polar opposite, discovering sex… to betrayal and finding a “family” in the biker gang.

I haven’t seen much Sons of Anarchy so I can’t make a comparison there, but I will say the characters were somewhat stereotypical. The conversations felt stilted, which might have been intentional. The interactions between the characters were stiff and not always believable. Some interactions that could have been really interesting were quickly glossed over.

The description clearly states it’s a prequel to a series, but I was still surprised to find the story was over at 79%. The rest of the document was a chapter in the series and an unrelated story. Maybe a little too obvious/too much promo.

I’m a biker chick myself, so I like the topic/theme. Can’t say that I’d read it otherwise, though.

I first read this nine years ago, a time when Sons of Anarchy was on its last season and I was trying to prolong my imaginary stay in the biker world.
Back then I gave this one 3 stars, likely because it read like SoA fanfic. I do recall that I wasn’t entirely sure if I liked the fact that this reads like a fanfic. I’m still not.
The name similarities, the paper-thin characters… not great.

I’ve also grown a lot in the nine years since. Enough to purse my lips at the slut shaming and Dax “becoming a man” after his first sexual encounter. I’m trying to figure out if I should think it in terms of a teenage PoV here, or as the author’s view of the world.
Or it could just be that this book is about ten years old, and all this was common in books written in 2010–2016 or so.

As of May 2024, two stars.

I got this one to try, so I could see if the author worked for me. It was interesting, well written, and I'm sure that it'd be great to have that background story for reading Satin & Steel, I just don't know if I can bring myself to do it.
I know it's based around SOA, and I love that show, so I don't know if I can read something that resembles it too closely.... I just don't know!!!
I'm torn, because I know that it's supposed to be different enough, and I really did enjoy Earning the Cut. Maybe it'll just be one of those ones that I have to work myself up to reading.
But if you want to try out Jayna Vixen's writing, this a a quick, enjoyable read to give you a chance to see what's going on!

Dax started out with a really shitty childhood and then has the girl all the boys in the school dream about coming to his defense. Trish is the girl with the plans to become a doctor, and from a family on the hill. Dax is not the boy her father wants her to be with. But these two fall in love anyway. Trish makes Dax become a better person, but he finds something wanting out anyway from his past. The MC from his father. He has lost his girl and turns to the MC afterall. When the girls comes back what will happen? Will she stay or will he walk away or will they both walk away? Young love is an amazing thing.
This is a really good book. Very touching and very well written. I will have to pick up the next book.

This story is well writtnen, but for some reason I found myself unable to connect to any of the characters. The story of Dax's childhood was like reading......well, a story. I felt dettached instead of being able to relate and 'feel' for the guy. Likewise with the rest of the gang they were merely people to me, no one I cared about one way or the other.

I read this with the intention of reading the sequel Satin and Steel however I am unsure if I will bother now, because as per above, I found myself not caring about the characters.

The blurb for this novella is pretty upfront regarding the fact it is based loosely on the Sons of Anarchy TV series, and in that respect I will agree. Unfortunately, SoA has stellar actors to bring the scripts to life, and the novella fell a bit flat for me. The story was good, although not outstanding or particularly memorable. The story line was original, but unbelievable. I would love to have seen more character development, as I think the writer has good potential to bring more excitement to the characters- but I will say, the author was clear about her protagonists' motivations. It just felt like a poor imitation of a great series. Not a bad read, at all, merely average.

This was a good read. It gave good insight into why Dax joined the MC. It is horrific what parents can do to their children. It is a pity that the system is sometimes full of people who are apathetic towards these abused children and that they fall through the cracks as a result. Every child has the potential as Dax showed here, but no one cared enough to break through his protective barrier. Not even his girlfriend. It breaks my heart.

This story was very well written. And I am looking forward to read more about Dax. Normally I will not follow series, but in this case I will make an exception.

Such a good story and wished I'd read it before Satin and Steel. Dax won my heart and his story is one that creates empathy for him as he tackles on battle after another. Even his 'good' foster family felt lacking in some way. Acceptance is all he really wants and it will take a tragedy for him to experience it!

A quick and easy read that fleshes out Dax and Trish's story, something I think that was missing from Satin and Steel. Trish got to shine in this book as well, keen to see how she gets on in Leather and Sand

Dax is a unique character that seeing where his flaws originated does not affect the way we see him. Usually I start to feel sorry for the charaqcters or I see them differently than the author intended but that did not happen here.

We see that Dax is from a rough home where his mother was a drug addict. we see how he grows up in foster care. than his first relationship with Trish.

I see him as a developing character and how the past molded him. Also if your going to read the series than this is an important read.

To tell you the truth, I did not see the need to make this book a whole book. It would have fitted as a chapter in any of the other books. However, now I know why this book was free...my point exactly.

Nonetheless, having a better scope of Dax's background. His struggles, fears, limitations and more important his lack of self-confidence, a reflection of his hard upbringing...that ultimately, were the core of his bad decisions and little desire to improve in life.

This book felt like an errand child, kind of out of place but hanging along with the rest of the family.

This was quick read, but good. It gave me a different perspective of Dex and of Trish. Makes me love both of them more, well really I didn't have feelings for Trish but now I do....this makes me rethink where I hope the next book goes. I honestly am not sure where I want it to go, but I know after reading EtC I want Leather and Sand more now!!

I recommend reading Earning the Cut second, that is the order it was written and I loved reading more about Dex after I had a taste of him.

This was a nice start to a new series for me. Dax had a rough childhood and to see how Trish came into his life and their obstacles was great. It was nice too see that Dax wasn't always so sure of himself and how he came to be the man he is now. I loved how the book started out with Dax childhood leading up to Satin and Steel. I can't wait for the next book. Loved it! Dax is definitely an alpha male.

I really liked this book, however it is very similar to Sons of Anarchy, even the main characters names are a little too similar for my liking. With that being said, the upbringing of dax is completely different. This is a very enjoyable book to read and i would for sure read the others in the series and i would have given 5 stars if it wasn't so close to the TV series
