From 1890 to 1898, he was stationed as a tax collector at several locations in the Moscow region. In 1891, his translation of the short story "A Rainy June" by Ouida appeared in the Bulletin of Foreign Literature. His first full book was a dictionary for farmers, published in 1894. While stationed at Uglich, he directed, designed and wrote for an amateur theater company. In 1896, he married the daughter of a local factory owner.
Two years later, he was appointed head of the Treasury Chamber (an office representing the Ministry of Finance) in Yaroslavl. He often visited the theater and published reviews in the local press. Soon, he was also contributing to Theater and Art [ru] in Moscow. By 1901, he had decided that he did not like his position or his colleagues and wanted to transfer or resign.

كان ميخائيل تشيخوف أصغر من شقيقه أنطون تشيخوف بخمس سنوات ، وتأثر به بصورة مبكرة اذ سعى أنطوان تشيخوف بث مشاعر الحب لدى الأخ الأصغر تجاه القراءة، كما كان يقدم له النصائح حول الكتب التي ينبغي التعرف إليها.
عاش ميخائيل تشيخوف جنباً إلى جنب مع شقيقة الأكبر وكان في صورة كل ما كان يقوم به أنطون تشيخوف و ما كان يقوله و مع من كان يلتقي.
كان ميخائيل مساعداً سكرتيراً للكاتب. وكان يبيض أعمال أنطون تشيخوف بخطه الجميل والدقيق والواضح. كما يزور هيئات تحرير المجلات والجرائد كي يحصل على الأتعاب . وانكب على تنفيذ كل شيء برغبة ومرح.
و منذ عام 1904 وحتى نهاية حياته في 14تشرين الثاني عام 1936 عمل ميخائيل على سيرة حياة أنطون تشيخوف معتبراً أن هذه المهمة هي واجب أدبي واجتماعي عليه أداؤه.
في عام 1905 نشرت "مجلة لأجل الجميع" مذكرات ميخائيل تشيخوف بحجم أكبر بمرتين. وظهرت الذكريات في مجموعة " عن أنطون باڤلوفيتش تشيخوف"والمنشورة في عام 1910بمناسبة مرور خمسين عاماً على ميلاد الكاتب . وفِي أعوام 1912-1916 وتحت إشراف ماريا بافلوفنا تشيخوفا صدرت مجموعة رسائل أنطون تشيخوف في ستة مجلدات وكان لها أهمية كبيرة لأجل اطلاع القراء الروس على تراث الكاتب الرسائلي. وتضمن كل مجلد من هذه الطبعة سيرة ذاتية كتبها ميخائيل تشيخوف ومكرسة لفترة حياة أنطون تشيخوف التي تعود إليها الرسائل المنشورة في المجلد المعني.
وفِي عام 1924 صدر كتاب جديد لميخائيل تشيخوف عنوانه " أنطون تشيخوف، المسرح، الممثلون، و"تاتيانا ريبينا" والمتضمن ذكريات عن الكاتب المسرحي ونص مسرحية أنطون تشيخوف "تاتيانا ريبينا" غير المعروفة حينذاك لدى القراء .
خلدت السوفييت ذكرى الكاتب في صور عدة منها افتتاح متحف أنطون تشيخوف في موسكو في عام 1923 ثم تحول إلى متحف الدولة للآداب. وشارك ميخائيل في عمل المتحف. في عام 1929 تم نشر مذكرات ميخائيل تشيخوف بعنوان " أنطون تشيخوف في العطل" وذلك في مجموعة " جمعية أنطون تشيخوف وعصره" المؤسسة في المتحف . وشارك ميخائيل في وضع التعليق على رسائل تشيخوف غير المنشورة والمطبوعة في عام 1930 في أعمال المتحف .
ولكن أعمال كاتب الذكريات والسيرة الذاتية جميعها كانت إعداداً تمهيدياً، من حيث الجوهر ، لكتاب " مع أنطون تشيخوف "الذي احتوى ما هو أهم من المذكرات السابقة وتضمن صفحات عديدة جديدة. وأبدع ميخائيل تشيخوف هذه التحفة بين جدران الدار في يالطا التي كانت ترتبط بها السنوات الأخيرة من حياة أنطون تشيخوف .

For one who professes distaste for biography/autobiography, I’ve been reading a lot of it lately. But it was easy to make an exception in this case.
I’ve read Anton Chekhov’s letters, a form of writing which might distinguish itself from autobiography by being both more honest and of greater literary worth. Letters are, after all – or where when people used to write then, at any rate – small literary gifts. I had a friend who used to send me letters hand-written and tied with a ribbon in a bow. They insisted upon being read in a special place with some degree of devotion. The experience is the very opposite of receiving an email and scanning it while logging onto facebook.
So when I saw this book half-price at The London Review Bookshop, I had to buy it, fully expecting it to add to my reading of Anton’s letters.
The book does not pretend to be more than it is: various pieces published over a period and now cobbled together. If you are expecting the book itself as a whole to be some sort of technical triumph, a remastering of the very idea of The Book, it isn’t. It’s a cobbled together collection of bits and pieces. But what marvellous bits and pieces they are.

This memoir by Anton Chekhov's younger brother is a fascinating scrapbook of a unique family that lived life with zeal. Do not expect a comprehensive telling of the great author's life. You will find that in Donald Rayfield's masterpiece, "Anton Chekhov: A Life," which was my very favorite read in 2017. Mikhail gives us a perspective also valuable by sharing the Chekhov family heart, humor, and relationships. This family worked hard, laughed much, aggressively pursued literature, music and getting to know everyone. Social networking in 19th century Russia was by talking, listening and building "community" into the wee hours. Take this book for what it is -- a brother reporting what he observed of life and the author, not a comprehensive history -- and you will be more inclined to enjoy the ride!

كتاب جيد يسلط الضوء على بعض من جوانب حياة انطون تشيخوف الشخصية وتعامله مع الادباء ودور النشر والحياة الأديية وسفراته وتنقلاته وقتها من منظار أخيه ورفيقه ومساعده ميخائيل ، في الحقيقة ما انكر اني اصبت بخيبة أمل لأني توقعت اجد محتوى اكثر عمقاً عن تشيخوف وفكره وأدبه وارائه بينما الكتاب في مجمله عبارة عن سرد لذكريات على هيئة قصص منفصلة اغلبها يتحدث عن امور العائلة والفلاحة والسفر وبعض المواقف هنا وهناك بطريقه مضجرة كثيراً ، كذلك الترجمة والتنسيق كانوا في حال ليست بالجيدة .

This is most definitely a book to evaluate on the basis of what it -is- rather than what it -promises.- The author and the subtitle both led this reader, at least, to expect a biography of Dr. Anton Chekhov, Russian man of letters, with insights that only a sibling can provide. Instead, it seems that, for a number of years throughout their respective lives, Anton and younger brother Mikhail did not live together...or even in the same town. True, there are glimpses into the sort of boy Anton was and the man he became, but, by and large, this volume needs to be read -- and, hopefully, enjoyed -- as a window into one family's life, interactions, adventures, and misadventures in 19th century Russia. That said, one can appreciate the author's clear, direct (for the most part) narrative. The footnotes, identifying the many different people mentioned in the text, are most helpful and could, perhaps, have been even more extensive. -- I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who might enjoy a slice-of-life story of a bygone era and civilization. Those who savor 19th century Russian literature will most likely find much here to interest and like.

A brother's memoir that doesn't include the last couple of years, an important period in A. Chekhov's life? Very bizarre. No explanation provided, or even attempted. OK, here's a brother's memoir, but not a thorough and authoritarian biographical effort. I can live with that.
After reading this book, was also left with this awkward feeling that hings were left unsaid, and that there were other tensions within the family that the author didn't want us to be privy to. And again, that's fine. I can live with that.

This was less than one might have hoped. A slight history filled with brief anecdotes, some certainly useful and entertaining.
I often wonder, in a situation like this, how much is fond remembrance and sharing, and how much is capitalizing on a loved ones history.

Rather disjointed collection of anecdotes from Anton Chekhov's life, in chronological order, by his brother. It's not great but at least it's good fun reading about abject poverty and misery when one is so comfortable one's self.
