I read fan translations of these chapters a few years ago but I wanted to buy the US adaptation because this is one of those titles I never expected to see licensed. (Support the things you love!) Also, since the ending of Blade of the Immortal, this has become my favorite manga.

This is part of the Viz Signature line and it's a beautiful edition. It's interesting to read the hard copy because I notice all sorts of little details I hadn't before. Kohske's art is beautiful and sharp, suiting the

I make it a habit to go into series blind so nothing gets spoiled. What's funny with this one, I didn't even have the genre right. If you look at the shelves this is on it seems like straight-up seinen gangster mystery right? Oh, but apparently there is a supernatural element. You're given a couple of hints of this by the end of the volume.

Even without that, this is a pretty interesting story. The two main characters are jacks of all trade, sort of mercenaries for hire. One is missing an eye,

Man reading a lot of places broken down into sectors or districts lately. Well I guess it's like the real world. Anyway we're thrown into a world about two handymen who go around doing jobs. One is a gigglo and other is a "Tag" or "Twlight" I think. The names are being thrown around but think of a hyper violent badass warrior with a sword. They also have a whore (no she is) who joins them after the first chapter and things become a bit more interesting because from her eyes we see the world of ...more

Ergastulum is a pseudo-Mediterranean city founded on slavery and social division. Originally used as a (view spoiler) in the present it appears to be little more than your average suburban slum. Crime is rampant and even with a police force on patrol, gangs rule the streets. GANGSTA. focuses on the exploits of characters that aren't explicitly tied to any gang, a fortune which allows ...more

So I got back to this series again after leaving it for a while, but let me say it still is amazing. The world is well built and I love the characters and Nina is so adorable

I love Gangsta so much! It's been some time since I read it and I'm so excited to reread the series.

Gangsta is manga about Nic and Worick (two handymen Benriya in the city of criminals) and Alex (former sex worker, who joins The Benriya after they kill her abusive ex). It's a violent manga, with lots of fighting sequences and many grey and morally dubious characters, it's so fascinating to uncover everyone's story, to see their motivations. I believe the author handles difficult topics well,

This was a pretty good read. It’s gritty, grimy, and sleazy but it had enough actual story to keep me interested. The characters are decent and the artwork is also not bad. I’ll continue on with this one to see where the story goes from here.

When I decided to read this manga it was mainly because:

1) Everyone was talking about how amazing it is.
2) The main character, Nicolas is deaf and uses sign language!

The manga is quite gory (not that I’m complaining) but I was so interested in reading this that I jumped into it immediately. I wouldn't say its my favorite manga but the story is pretty good.

Review brought by Geekly Review

When I first heard about Gangsta I was immediately unsure about it. I often hear about new manga series on forums, but they rarely live up to the hype. I decided to buy this comic to give it a chance, but expecting at the same time yet another violent yakuza-type drama series. What was received, instead, was something very much in the style of Frank Miller’s work; featuring two independent characters who do odd jobs for various individuals, local citizens, crime

I love gangster stories, so when I saw the anime Gangsta, I watched season 1 immediately and loved it. I was disappointed to learn the studio making the anime went under and no one wanted to pick up the show, so I picked up the manga.

Dark, humorous, snappy, and gritty--Gangsta has a style and wit that appeals to me. If I wasn't already familiar with the story, I might be confused by the pace at which information is thrown at the reader, and even at the end of volume 1, five issues in, the

For the most part I really quite enjoyed this book, great art, fun characters and setting, and it was really interesting to see a deaf main character, which I haven’t seen often depicted in manga / comics.
(Vagabond being the only other that springs to mind)

But I have to say I was quite turned off by the inclusion of a tasteless and unnecessary transphobic joke/remark from one of the main characters towards the end of the book, which left a bad taste.

Gangsta was a title I was originally unsure about - from the blurb it sounded like yet another yakuza uber violent urban drama.

Instead, what we have is a very Frank Miller/1000 Bullets inspired story about two independent characters who do odd jobs for various individuals - local citizens, crime bosses, the police. We've seen this story before ("Till Death Do Us Part" - which also featured a katana-wielding super

TWO great mangas in one day?? Something must be aligned in the ways of the universe..
A new friend recommended this manga to me, and passed me her copy of the first volume. I didn't know what to expect, except what she told me: sex and violence. And that's exactly what I got, except that I also got a lot more as well.
I got a really cool universe/setting. The city of Ergastulum is really interesting, in the way that its hierarchy and justice system works.

Seinin manga, hardcore sex and violence somewhat like Miller's Sin City series, in a way. Not for kids. But surprising. Nic and Worick are two "handymen" who do independent jobs, sort of like ronin samurai warriors. But one is blind in one eye, the other deaf, one a former street gigolo. They liberate a prostitute from a gang, Alex. All the violent expectations are met in this gritty world, but what makes this stand out is the strong characterization, the relationships between the characters. I ...more

I was actually really surprised by how much I liked this one. A group I'm part of had it as a monthly read, but I passed it up because I thought it wasn't my thing. Then I read the Otaku USA review and found out what it actually was about and (if I remember correctly) marked it as "recommended". Then I decided to give it a shot. They haven't led me wrong with that label yet.

This story is about two guys and their... I guess you could call her a secretary. The two guys are "handymen" and do odd

I was recommended this series by a librarian at the South Hill Library a month or so back. So, when I saw they had the first 4 volumes a couple weeks ago, I checked them out to read to see if they were as good as she kept assuring me they are.

When I was between 1/4 and 1/3 through this volume, I honestly wanted to give up on it. It was boring me, and I was doubting that it would pick up to be the type series that deserved the praises the librarian heaped upon it. This volume was a really

Phenomenal. Not only features a canon Deaf protagonist, but one who is sarcastic as hell. I loved the mechanic of sign language as white text on black bubbles; it really made Nic's words stand out. Definitely rated R/17+ for sex, violence, drugs, you name it. The art was much cleaner than I expected. I can't wait to read more of this!

I had watched the tv series of Gangsta before I decided to dive into the manga series, mainly because the tv series ends on a cliff-hanger and it doesn't look like there are any plans to continue into a new season. Because of that, I wanted to read the manga to one, remember what happened in the series, and two, to find out what happens to these characters where the series left off.

This isn't a comic for the faint of heart since it does deal with adult subject matter that can be quite heavy and

I read this on a whim, the cover and art style intrigued me.

The general premise is that these two friends work together as mercenaries for hire. One of them has enhanced abilities and is called a tag. The city they are in is crime ridden so there is no shortage of job opportunities.

It's a pretty basic concept.

This being only the first volume I only got the barest taste for where the series is going. But here are my thoughts:

The Good:
-The art style is crisp, easy to follow, and interesting to

Really good seinen manga.

Art: 4 stars

--> Backgrounds: 2.5 stars I would like to see how the city actually looks like.
Story: 3 stars
Characters: 5 stars

I found this manga while I was booooring, almost going to sleep and once I started I couldn't stop.

It gave me Black Lagoon vibes (both mangas receive calls to "works", both mangas are set in fictional and rotten locations and they drink an specific and real drink) but that doesn't mean it's a bad manga, it's actually

It's always nice to go back and read an official translation of a favorite. I fell in love with this manga maybe three or four years ago, about a year before it started getting published in the states and I've been itching to add it to my collection ever since, so I already knew ahead of time how much I liked it.

Although the author made a point to mention that she makes this story up on the fly, rather than having a detailed plan for where it's going, that's hard to imagine since even in the

This manga is certainly not for the faint hearted and it is incredible. The dynamic protagonists, Nico and Worick have an interesting and certainly questionable friendship and business as they lead their lives as 'Handymen' in the shady city of Ergastulum. A city populted with gangs, killers, whores, thieves, questionable cops and mafia families.
I really enjoyed this manga and all of the characters I encountered. I'm keen to find out more about the 'tags'/'twilights' and how they came to be, as

Gangsta! is a prime example of "Never judge a book, by it's title". This book came out of left field, smacked me in the face and made me enjoy a ride I was not prepared to be on. Characters, it's world and pacing are all done way too well, and can't wait to push on.
