Born and raised in Scotland, schooled in London, when his brothers die his parents take him to Canada. His mom is deaf and he develops an interest in sound and voice. He teaches at a school for the deaf, meets his wife. While working with a telegraph he gets some sound and gets a patent as he aspires to perfect the telephone. Also invents metal detector. Insightful, pix and drawings.
