After having been unjustly confined to a mental hospital for seven years for throwing his mother's lover into a swimming pool, twenty-four-year-old sexually naive Sherborne Eppe embarks on travels through America accompanied by a Black hoodlum named Hannibal
The book had been sitting on my bookshelf for 41 years. It was one of those books I bought through Book-of-the-Month Club without really meaning to. So it was quite a surprise to be so thoroughly charmed by the tale of Bourne Eppe. I've read nothing else by MacLeish, but I may well do so now. It's a wild twist on the coming-of-age novel. Catcher in the Rye meets Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Bought this at a bookstore in Jackson, MS because it was just calling to me. Bornie is such a relatable character in so many ways. Big ole plot twist that I didn’t see coming!! Wondering why I had never heard of this before
