Yoko Tsuno averts a global disaster by working with the help of an old friend. As with other Yoko Tsuno adventures, there is a lot of intrigue and action, so there is a lot to like here. One additional point to add, the artist excels at drawing vehicles and other mechanical devices, and this story gives him the opportunity to do that.

RATED AS IF I WERE A YOUTH would because that's obviously the targeted audience.

As an adult ***- the science of it is interesting and there's a lot of action but it's not worth it if you don't want to put on your kid shoes.

I will have read and will own all 122 Catalan Communication books, even the 1986 Corben calendar, before I leave this mortal plain so this comes with the collection- otherwise I would have bought this first one but skipped the second which I assume will carry this exact review.

The art is above average and captures all the intensity of the lava and the science of all the incredibly technologically advanced things that control it and all kinds of other wonderous science fiction stuff underground that they are trying to control to save the Caribbean. The characters are well drawn BUT all the Vinians look the same- the only difference between them is whether they are male, female or children. No species that's been around for far more than 400,000 years look exactly the same!

Their "Comcat" imprint is suited for a younger audience but this one appears to be the youngest by far. I've enjoyed the others as an adult and will probably continue to do so unless the two Blake and Mortimer titles are the same as this.

It's very interesting to me that they went for the kids since their regular (non-"Comcat") titles tend to be VERY ADULT. If diversifying their audience worked and they weren't in the era of the speculator boom maybe they'd still be in business. They had MANY more titles planned that even "exist" (only) as ISBNs- most of which are "Comcat" imprinted but others exist as well.

Vulcanus’ Smidse
Yoko Tsuno #3
Geschreven en getekend door Roger Leloup.
ISBN 90-314-0224-9

Yoko Tsuno.

Ingenieur Freeman van het bedrijf Fortex.
Madison, helikopterpiloot.

Melvile, Hoofdopzichter van het boorplatform.
Harriet, opzichter.

Ondergrondse Vineaanse basis:
Khany, Vineaanse en oude bekende van Yoko.
Lhana en Sylka, vriendinnen van Khany.
Karpan, leider van de Vineanen op aarde.
Vynka en Wegha, technici.

The first thing I noticed is that it is obviously not the first album in the series. The protagonists meet a group of blue skinned subterranean dwellers, who came to earth from another planet generations ago and built cities deep underground. But the characters had already met these people before, had friends among them, and fought against the villain. It was sort of like watching The Empire Strikes Back without knowing any reference to Star Wars. It’s possible, but not as enjoyable.

This is a fast paced book, filled with lots of technical jargon and hard science, which made it a very intelligent read on top of the all of the action. If you ignore the extra-terrestrial material a lot of what is going on seems somewhat plausible. The aliens ae redirecting magma under the ground to force up a new landmass which they will colonize and begin having communications on equal terms with the human population. It was rather good.

This edition is the 1979 hardback published by Dupuis, in French.

The worldbuilding having been done in the first book in the series, this episode can devote itself to rapid action. The story is straightforward and a little flimsy, but nevertheless involves big themes of geoengineering, survival politics, and mutiny. There’s a nice juxtaposition of highly advanced and gigantic alien tech with small scale traditional Japanese archery.

Again, there are big plot holes, such as why Yoko has to be involved in the rebellion, but hey that’s what cartoon heroines do. Great fun.

Yoko and her friends meet the subterranean Vineans again in a story involving peril on the ocean's surface, and below. Another fast paced romp full of heroism and high concept hijinks.

Another adventure with the Vineans. The art continues to amaze me, and Yoko and Khany make great protagonists. I do wish that Vic and Pol had a little more to do this time around.

Cool sci-fi adventure that fits with recent geothermal and LK-99 trends. 7/10 - Good.

I actually read the Dutch edition which is #3 in the series.

Waarom is zij precies nodig?).
