Hailed as Rivera’s exotic young wife who “dabbles in art,” she went on to produce brilliant paintings but remained in her husband’s shadow throughout her life. Today, almost six decades after her untimely death, Kahlo’s fame rivals that of ...more

The book is both an informative and interpretive account of Frida's personal and creative life. Slightly drier than most of the reads on the artist I've come across previously; however, this is probably the best aspect of the book, as Frida's life was already mythologized by herself, the feminist movement, Hollywood, and many other of her admirers.

A compact biography, complete with analyses of Frida’s paintings and a short discussion of her influence on modern artists. All my knowledge of Frida Kahlo prior to reading this came from watching the Salma Hayek film, so I was surprised to learn that she only gained widespread fame in the 1980s - three decades after her death. To posthumously transcend being known as ‘Diego Rivera’s wife’ and develop into such a cult icon shows how important her life and her work have become.

Really informative take on Frida Kahlo's life. I have read different thinkpieces, news articles and misinformation about Frida so it was cool to read about how she portrayed herself.

I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the "Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit" exhibit last year, where I purchased this biography. It really is a perfect place for such an exhibition with Diego Rivera's beautiful murals having a special place in our museum. Other than the murals, thou ...more
