ভোর রাতে মহব্বত আলীর ঘুম ভেঙে গেল। তিনি থেকে উঠে বাথরুমে গিয়ে তার মুখটা ধুতে লাগলেন। তার মনে হতে লাগল খ্যাপা ধরনের একটা মেয়ের থুতু এখনো তার মুখে লেগে আছে। তিনি যতই সেটা ধোয়ার চেষ্টা করছেন কিছুতেই পরিষ্কার করতে পারছেন না। কিছুতেই না।

Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.
Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.
Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.
Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.
Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.
Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.
Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

মহব্বত আলী দেশের কোনো একটি পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মাননীয় উপাচার্য। অন্যান্য উপাচার্য মহারাজের ন্যায় তিনিও থাকেন দুর্গতুল্য বাড়িতে, যে বাড়ির নাগাল কোনোক্রমেই সাধারণ শিক্ষার্থীরা পায় না।
অন্যান্য দিনের তুলনায় আজকে বেশ সক্কাল সক্কাল ঘুম থেকে উঠেই চলে যান ভিসি ভবনে তার সাধের গোয়াল ঘরে। আ্যকাডেমিক কাউন্সিলের চাইতে গোয়ালঘর মহব্বত সাহেবের ঢের ভালো লাগে!গোয়ালঘরের গাভীগুলোই তাকে তার কদাকার চেহারা আর বেঢপ বউয়ের কথা খানিকটা হলেও ভুলিয়ে দেয়।
মহব্বত সাহেব গোয়ালঘর থেকে ফিরে বাসার কাজের মেয়েটিকে দেখতে পান। মেয়েটি বড্ড পাজি, কিছুতেই বশে আসতে চায় না।
আজ সকালেই হাজির হয়েছে ছাত্রনেতা কালা তারেক। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় মহব্বত সাহেবের হাতে আছে এই কালা তারেকরা আছে বলেই তার মতো নিরীহ লোক ভিসি হিসেবে টিকে আছেন। উপাচার্যরা তো আজকাল সবচেয়ে নিরাপত্তাহীনতার মধ্যে। তাই কালা তারেক গংদের তিনি বেশ তোয়াজ করে চলেন।আজ সকালে আসার কারণ জানতে চাইলে কালা তারেক সাহেব জানান,দলের সেক্রেটারি জুয়েল একটি হিন্দু মেয়েকে রেপ করেছে।এই সেরেছে! মহব্বত আলীর মনে পড়ল জুয়েল এমপির নিকট আত্মীয়।
তিনি কালা তারেককে বললেন এসব সামাল দিতে,সর্বাত্মক সহযোগিতা তিনি দেবেন।
আজ সকালেই আবার টিচার সিলেকশন বোর্ডে বসতে হবে। নিজের দলের ক্যান্ডিডেটকে টিচার বানাতেই হবে -এই মহাপরিকল্পনা নিয়ে বের হলেন মহব্বত আলী।
ভাইভা বোর্ডে তিনিসহ তিনজন তার পক্ষের বাকি একজন বেশ ঘাড়ত্যাড়া, সোজাকথায় সৎ আর স্পষ্টভাষী ।সেই সৎ টিচার আবার চায় ভালো রেজাল্টধারী এক হিন্দু মেয়েকে টিচার বানাতে! কাভি নেহি! মনে মনে হুংকার দিয়ে উঠলেন মহব্বত আলী। একে মেয়ে তার ওপর হিঁদু! কোনোভাবেই তা হতে দিতে পারেন না মহব্বত আলী।
আজই এলাকায় পাট প্রতিমন্ত্রী আসছেন। সর্বনাশ! ভাবলেন মহব্বত আলী।না গেলেই নয়-ভাবতে ভাবতে বের হতে গিয়ে দেখলেন ধর্ষণের বিচার চেয়ে রোগাটে এক মেয়ে প্লাকার্ড নিয়ে দাড়িয়ে আছে তাও আবার একা!
প্রতিমন্ত্রীকে অভ্যর্থনা জানাতে বেরিয়ে গেলেন উপাচার্য। এদিকে প্লাকার্ড ধরা মেয়ে নীলাকে দেখে দলে দলে সাধারণ শিক্ষার্থীরা এসে যোগ দিল। তারা সমস্বরে বিচার চাইতে লাগল।
উপায়ন্তর না দেখে ভিসি পুলিশ পাহারায় ক্যাম্পাসে প্রবেশ করলে সাধারণ শিক্ষার্থীদের তীব্র প্রতিবাদের মুখে পড়ে।
এবার তিনি কালা তারেককে তার দলবল নিয়ে সাধারণ শিক্ষার্থীদের ওপর হামলা করতে নিদের্শ দিলেন মহব্বত আলী।
কিন্তু তারপর? না, আর বলব না জানতে পড়ুন বইটি।
প্রথম প্রথম মনে হচ্ছিল যেন ছফার 'গাভী বৃত্তান্ত' পড়ছি! বড্ড মিল পাচ্ছিলাম।সেই অযোগ্য ভিসি,গোয়ালঘর,নোংরা ছাত্র আর শিক্ষক রাজনীতি এগুলোতো আহমদ ছফার বইতেও ছিল। কিন্তু না,কিছু মিল থাকলেও মূল জায়গাটিতে অমিল আছে।শেষে রয়েছে বাস্তবধর্মী টুইস্ট।
বইটি লেখা হয়েছে ২০০৫ সালে।কিন্তু ২০১৬ সালে পড়তে গিয়েও নিজের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সাথে মনে অজান্তেই মিল খুঁজে পাচ্ছিলাম। অথচ বিশ্বাস করুন, আমি একদমই মিল খোঁজার অভিপ্রায়ে পড়িনি। সরকার পরিবর্তন হয়,কিন্তু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অযোগ্য,অসৎ আর নষ্টভ্রষ্টদের তুর্কিনাচন কখনোই থামে না স্রেফ নামটা বদলায় মাত্র!

মহব্বত আলী টিপিক্যাল বাংলাদেশের যেকোন ভিসিদের মতনই একজন। ভাল "জ্যাক" থাকলে যে অপদার্থরাও ভাল পজিশনে চলে যেতে পারে তার খুব ভাল উদাহরন হল এই মহব্বত আলী। এই মহব্বত আলীরই একদিনের বর্ননা সকাল থেকে রাত পর্যন্ত উঠে এসেছে বইটিতে। অনেক ইভেন্ট ফুল বলা যায় ঘটনাগুলো। ঘটনার সূত্রপাত হয় যখন একজন এমপির ভাতিজা একজন সংখ্যালঘুর সম্প্রদায়ের এক মেয়েকে ধর্ষন করে। কাম্পাস জুড়ে অস্থিতিকর পরিস্থিতি সৃষ্টি হয়। যেহেতু রাজনীতিক দল থেকে সুবিধা পায় আমাদের মহব্বত আলী তাই বিষয়টা ধামা চাপা দিতে উঠে পরে লাগে মহব্বত আলী। কিন্তু পরিস্থিতি হাত থেকে বের হয়ে যেতে লাগে একজন মাত্র মেয়ের কারনে।
পাঠপ্রতিক্রিয়াঃ ছাত্র রাজনীতি খুব ভাল করে উঠে এসেছে মুজাইকের এই বইটিতে। একটা নির্দিষ্ট দলের সময়ের ঘটে যাওয়া বিষয় নিয়ে কাহিনী এগিয়েছে। বেশী বললে আবার চাকুরি থাকবে না :P
মজার কথা হল আমি বইটার নাম কেন মহব্বত আলীর একদিন তা আমি রিভিউ লিখতে বসে বুঝতে পারলাম (দিন যাচ্ছে আর আমি আহাম্মক হচ্ছি)

শৈশবে আমার মনোজগৎ নাড়িয়ে দেওয়া একটা বই। রেপ কি? রেপ করলে কি হয়? মেয়েটা আত্মহত্যা করে কেন? হাজারটা প্রশ্ন ছিল আমার।
জাফর ইকবাল সিরিয়াস ইস্যু নিয়ে বই লিখেছেন কম। সেনসিটিভ ইস্যু নিয়ে লেখা তার বইগুলির মধ্যে আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয়।
মেয়েটির নাম ছিল মায়া। এখনো ভুলিনি নামটা।

একটি ডিস্টোপিয়ান উপন্যাস। কিন্তু দুঃখের বিষয় উপন্যাসটির প্রায় প্রতিটি ঘটনা সত্যি। সম্ভবত জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সেই চরম দুর্ভাগ্যজনক ঘটনাটির ছায়া নিয়ে বইটি লেখা হয়েছে, কিন্তু এসব তো আসলে সমস্ত আমলের, সমস্ত দলের জন্যই সত্য থাকে। খুঁটিনাটি ফারাক বাংলাদেশের পাঠকরা আরও ভাল জানবেন।
পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় রাজনীতির সঙ্গে একটিই বড় পার্থক্য খুঁজে পেলাম। এখানে কর্তৃপক্ষ এখনও এতটা নির্লজ্জভাবে সর্বব্যাপী শক্তিশালী নয়, কিন্তু এখানে কর্তৃপক্ষ আর প্রতিবাদীদের নেতৃত্বের একাংশের মধ্যে এক ধরনের সুষম বোঝাপড়া থাকে। কর্তৃপক্ষের একচ্ছত্র ক্ষমতার অভাবে এবং শক্তিশালী মিডিয়ার উপস্থিতির কারণে এখানে প্রতিবাদী ক্যাম্পাসগুলির আন্দোলন ক্যাডার লেলিয়ে ভাঙা হয় না, ভাঙা হয় নেতাদের কিছুজনকে কিনে নিয়ে। যেটা এই উপন্যাসে একেবারেই অনুপস্থিত।

Obviously a political book; motivated by actual events that happened in MZI sir's own university.
As per story telling and plot, it is not a ground breaking book. It is not even a very good MZI book. The plot is predictable and bland, and there are barely any memorable characters. There's only one pseudo protagonist, but she does not get enough space to shine.
The ending is also very conventional.
The message is loud and clear, but the book is boring.

আমাদের দেশের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক-রাজনীতি বুঝতে হলে এই বই অবশ্যই পড়তে হবে। এ বইয়ের মূল চরিত্র মহব্বত আলী একটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য। তাঁর এক দিনের কর্মকান্ডের মাধ্যমে লেখক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভয়াবহ দুর্ণিতির ছবি এঁকেছেন। এক নিঃশ্বাসে পড়ার মত বাস্তব-ধর্মী বই।

যে থিম নিয়ে বইটা লেখা, সেই প্রেক্ষাপটে লেখাও যথেষ্ট সাহসের ব্যাপার। চমৎকার একটা বই। কিশোর উপন্যাস এবং সায়েন্স ফিকশনের বাইরে একদম ভিন্ন ধরনের একটা লেখা :)

ছোটোবেলায় পড়সিলাম।কাহিনী কি ছিলো মনে নাই।কিন্তু এটা মনে আছে যে পড়ে খুব ভাল লাগসিলো

এই বইটা প্রকাশিত হবার পর এক যুগের বেশি সময় পার হয়েছে, কিন্তু বাংলাদেশের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোর অবস্থা এমন বা এরচেয়ে খারাপ হয়েছে। আমার বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় জীবন শুরু হয়েছিল প্রায় তিন দশক আগে, অবস্থা তখনও কম-বেশি এমন ছিল। তারও দশ বছর আগে কি অবস্থা এরচেয়ে একেবারে অন্য রকম ছিল? মনে হয় না। সর্বোচ্চ বিদ্যাপীঠের শিক্ষক আর প্রশাসকদের মধ্যে যখন দুর্নীতি, স্বজনপ্রীতি, নোংরামী, মাস্তানী, সাম্প্রদায়িকতা, দলাদলি, মিথ্যাচারের চর্চ্চা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় তখন জ্ঞানের চর্চ্চা পালাবার পথ খুঁজে পায় না। এমন পরিবেশে, এমন শিক্ষক আর প্রশাসকদের কাছ থেকে শিক্ষার্থীরা কী শিখবে! সমাজে মানুষের নৈতিকতার মানের ক্রম অধোগতি কোন হাওয়াই কারণে ঘটে না। নিম গাছের গোড়ায় প্রতিদিন মধু ঢাললেও সেখানে মিষ্টি ফল ফলবে না।
বইটার কাহিনী, ভাষা, উপস্থাপনা নিয়ে সাহিত্যের লোকজন হয়তো বিস্তর ভুলভাল বের করতে পারবেন, তবে বইটা আরও অনির্দিষ্ট কালের জন্য বাংলাদেশের পাবলিক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একটা কালচিত্র হয়ে থাকলো।
পুনশ্চঃ আহমদ ছফা'র 'গাভী বিত্তান্ত' যারা পড়েছেন তাদের কাছে অনেকগুলো বিষয় 'কমন' বলে মনে হবে। কী আর করা, দুজন লেখক তো অভিন্ন প্রতিষ্ঠান নিয়ে কালচিত্র এঁকেছেন!

This book is about a day in মহব্বত আলী's life. It started okay but turned into a headache for him. Nothing he couldn't handle, right?😠
The whole plot is kind of disturbing. Yet very believable. Because I feel like there is some truth or similarity to it with real life. It portrayed the political aspect of our country. Not only just politics but also what the people in power are capable of in general. How humans shaped their lives with money and power without any morality. It was scary to read about.
The book itself is well-written. The plot was scarily convincing. The main character was a piece of every bad vocabulary word. Good world-building. The book definitely kept me invested.

Even though he says everything is imagined and has NO RESEMBLANCE TO REAL LIFE WHATSOEVER, I still thunk somewhere something similar is happening /has happened.
