I picked this book through the vine program because it is a topic that I'm highly interested in. The poaching of these animals just turns my stomach. I kept wondering when I saw stories on this in the news why it couldn't be stopped. Why were they letting this happen? This book brought on many insights as why the poaching occurs, how they are trying to stop it and what you can do to help.
My biggest problem with this book is that it was very slow. Even though the topic is interesting, the executi

I chose to read this book because I'm very much against poaching. And I think everyone should be informed about this issue. Essentially this book was about how elephants and rhinoceros are being poached for their ivory tusks and horn. It talks about how many different types of elephants and rhinoceros are being poached for various reasons. I thought it was interesting because it also talked about what drives a person into this dangerous "business". This book was very interesting, providing many ...more

There is an international disgrace out there; the wanton slaughter of thousands of elephants and rhinoceroses that gets worse every year. The lust for ivory and horns is one of man’s ugliest traits. Ronald Orenstein, in IVORY, HORN AND BLOOD, has written a book about this tragedy that is a difficult read but eye-opening in its scope.

In the book, Dr. Orenstein examines the slaughter of thousands of elephants and rhinos in a greedy fervor for their tusks and horns. In recent years, eight of every

I liked this book because I am very against poaching, and it helped me get a better understanding on why people poach. It had a lot useful information and it provided quite a bit of facts that not many people would've known about, like how many elephant and rhinos we started out with compared to the number we are at now and the various types of elephants and rhinos that are being poached for specific reasons. One of the main reasons why I liked this book was because it talked about the endangerm ...more

Well-researched and rather depressing look at the destruction world-wide of rhinos and elephants and the insatiable desire for ivory and rhino horn for decorative and medicinal purposes. Africa's poverty, instability and political corruption have aided in this destruction despite the heroic efforts of rangers and conservation officials. Some hope at the end.
