C&K Digest - A remixed transcript of The Coffee & Kidlit Show, Issue 1: Write with Heart! A conversation with Carli Valentine on publishing a children's book inspired by her child with a heart defect
“For people that are considering writing a book— if it’s important to you, it’s likely going to be important to other people.” Carli Valentine
Carli knows a thing or two about hearts. As a mom of a boy named Finn who has vascular ring—a congenital heart defect also known as CHD—it was Finn’s other heart, his emotional heart, his heart full of love that inspired Carli to write a love story to Finn in the form of a children’s book titled Extra Special Heart .
In this issue of C&K Digest , Carli Valentine talks about her book Extra Special Heart and its impact on her own family and many other families of children with congenital heart defects. Carli also gives some great advice for those considering writing their own children’s books based on life experiences.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is write with heart!
Each issue of C&K Digest is a transcript from an interview on The Coffee & Kidlit Show that has been concised, edited, and enhanced with pictures and other images to provide a different format. We all have busy lives. Sometimes it can be harder to listen to an hour-long video live stream or podcast than it can be to read an interview one segment at a time. That’s the purpose of C&K Digest. Consider it a podcast remixed!
The Coffee & Kidlit Show is a live morning video podcast that invites children’s book authors as guests to talk about their books and what inspired them. As real conversations about imaginary stories, these aren’t your typical read-aloud videos! Each discussion dives deep into the author’s experiences that made them decide that their story deserved to be in a book. Each guest also gives their own advice for fellow kidlit authors. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, librarian, or even a children’s book author, there’s something for you in every episode and issue of C&K Digest .
Each episode and corresponding issue of C&K Digest is hosted by Travis D. Peterson. Travis is a freelance book designer and author coach doing business as Launch Mission Creative, and author of children’s books including the award-winning Ada and the Helpers and Never Ever Build a Blanket Fort!
