Discover Lysandra Vuong's hit supernatural action Webtoon Covenant in print for the first time ever.

"If you need a comic that blends action fantasy with mythology, comedy, and punk gothic fashion, Covenant is wildly enjoyable." -Women Write About Comics

In a world where priests are decked out in holy tattoos and brandish machine guns in the face of demons, a powerful exorcist and a mysterious boy cross paths . . . in a college classroom.

Erza’s faith is waning when God intervenes and sends him on a mission to protect Sunny, an outwardly normal human, from demonic forces. Looks can be deceiving, however, as Sunny proves to have hidden secrets and a bloody past nipping at his heels. Between Erza’s sunny sarcasm, and Sunny’s closed-off distant demeanor, the two struggle to find any common ground to bridge the gap. Yet, as much as the two bicker and retain distance, neither can help but be drawn to the other.

With his church under scrutiny and the threat of war on the horizon, will Ezra find his conviction in time to keep Sunny safe? Will Sunny even accept his help? Or will they both suffer the consequences??

From debut creator LySandra Vuong comes the first volume of the supernatural action webcomic that explores religious faith, a slow burn queer romance, the weight of destiny, and what it means to be good in a world plagued by demons.

This volume collects episodes 1–18 of the hit WEBTOON comic Covenant.

2.75!

This was one of my most anticipated book because the story and the character art looked so good!! The art was actually good but it really failed on the dialogues, I often found them to cheesy and out of place and for a NA novel this read pretty YA. I did however, like the characters. I enjoyed the interactions between them. The action sequences were really well done as well but it failed on the plot because it just felt like it was building and nothing really happened in the book., I was waiting for something big to happen or a twist but it did not happen and I did not see the romance anywhere tbh.

It was near a three because it was short, fast-paced and actually enjoyable and I may continue with the following books but it should not negate the things that it failed on. This series does have potential.

If you like webtoons, I would say go read it....I heard of this one and the idea of this book sounded really interesting to me but it failed on the execution.

Let me preface this by saying that I'll read almost anything by a Vietnamese diaspora author. Graphic novels aren't usually my medium of choice, but this past year, Hungry Ghost was one of my favorite reads. Growth.

As someone that grew up Catholic, any stories involving priests instantly give me PTSD, but this is probably more sacrilegious than anything else, if you care about things like that. I'm trash for a hot demon. In this case, I'm also trash for the priest that looks like Manacled Draco.

Cool and addicting art style that kept pulling me in, despite not understanding most of what was going on.

The whole concept was intriguing enough for me to pick this up, the character design and visuals eye-catching enough for me to pull through til the end. The problem for me was completely a me problem, because I just couldn’t keep up with the plot.

So yeah, not my usual genre but very cool, nonetheless.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Supernatural/Paranormal themes
- Religious themes
- Slow burn romance
- Ends on a cliffhanger

Covenant is a graphic novel I’ve known about since its Webtoon days, but never got around to reading until I was given an ARC of the published version. I’ve been excited to dive into this one for quite a while, so it’s safe to say my expectations were high. There is something about Covenant no one can deny – the art is absolutely gorgeous. The visuals were truly stunning, and I adored how the demons were depicted.

I’m completely intrigued by all the different relationships. The potential slow burn romance developing between Ezra and Sunny could be exquisite, yet I was really engaged by Ezra’s relationship with Gabriel. I don’t know if I was reading too much into their scenes together, but I sense there could be something there? Gabriel is very mysterious and could be an exceptional love interest. I’m excited to see which way the author goes because Sunny – and the dark raincloud above his head – is also one of my favourite characters.

The religious imagery was interesting, and I loved how religion informed the storyline. The magical tattoos and the gun-wielding exorcists felt like such a unique take. I’m looking forward to seeing how the world-building develops as I want to know more about the Great Church and the order of everything. I hope there will be a strong villain coming soon. I think Sunny’s storyline is setting one up and I’m ready to see how everything unravels.

Covenant has a lot of potential and if the next few volumes deliver a good storyline, I could easily see it becoming one of my favourite graphic novels. Thank you to Oni Press for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Oni Press for providing me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the story that this graphic novel set up. I loved these tattooed, gun-wielding exorcists fighting against the demons trying to feed on the souls of humans. However, while there were intriguing and mysterious points, I never found myself as engaged as I wanted to be. I never connected fully to the characters, I just don't think it was long enough.
I often find this to be the case, personally, in the first volume of most graphic novels, they never quite give me enough to grow attached. But I think this is a very fun story and a very promising start to a series.

*I received an ecopy of this book via NetGalley. This has not influenced my review.*

Beautiful art. Beautiful people. Lots of dynamic action scenes. Some ominous religious imagery. Interesting designs for angels and demons and tattoos and weapons. Nice use of color (full color, but a sorta limited palette or tint to everything). Just a very aesthetically pleasing graphic novel.

Ezra was badass but also just a sometimes whiny, awkward, silly, normal dude. Samson was short-fused and a bit of a wildcard, but she was a badass through and through. She was fun. Sunny was closed-off and mysterious, but for good or understandable reasons. Honestly, every character was a little bit ridiculous. But that's just the vibe of the book. It's not something to be taken too seriously. They were fun, lovable characters to read about.

Ezra and Sunny, who I'm guessing will end up in a romance, definitely gave off grumpy/sunshine vibes. Which is funny because Sunny is the grumpy one.

The story was about a special church of badass exorcists who go out and fight demons using magical weapons and blessings they get from angels that they ink into their skin as tattoos. The official description is actually pretty on-point.

Like I said, there was as lot of action. There was some silliness. But there were also a few more dark or serious moments. They were pretty brief here, but I would love it if the characters' struggles get explored more in future volumes.

I find a lot of graphic novel series take some time to really get into things, with the first volume being more of an intro than anything, and I did find that to be the case here. Which is fine, better that than have things feel rushed. So I'm rating this 4 stars on the basis that it was a good start to a story that I want more of.

Overall, this was a solid start to what seems like a fun, aesthetically beautiful series about some seriously badass exorcists!

*Rating: 4 Stars // Read Date: 2024 // Format: Ebook*

Recommended For:
Anyone who likes full color graphic novels, fantasy/paranormal with religious elements (especially angels and demons), lots of action, characters who just a bit ridiculous in a lovable way, and potentially grumpy/sunshine m/m romance.

Thank you to LySandra Vuong, Oni Press, and NetGalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review-- all opinions are my own.

If you are looking for great world-building, interesting characters, and good tropes this book is definitely for you. I had so much fun reading this, I actually read it over two days. Covenant's storyline and blurb alone were interesting and immediately caught my eye. Along with the art and cool characters of course. I really enjoyed how the funny personalities of the characters go along well with the more serious tone of the plot. It really made the reading experience more enjoyable for me. I think readers will really enjoy Covenant as a whole and will pick up the next volume as soon as they can. I know I definitely will.

This is very entertaining! I love the art style, the story, and the characters. I find Erza humorous 😂 and it's kinda ironic that his name is Sunny when he's probably the epitome of darkness 😅

The story is sort of dark but the humor (appearing on the right part) balances it out so it is not that heavy to ready!

I don’t often read webtoons so it was fun to get outside my comfort zone for once. The art is absolutely gorgeous!! I did find the transitions between scenes a little confusing at times, but the story was pretty enjoyable overall! I can’t wait to see what happens next.

This was such a fun read!

Even though the first half was mostly infodumping, I still really enjoyed the art, the characters, and the plot. I love how this webtoon doesn't take itself too seriously. The characters look like fun people to be around.

Of course, as someone who loves anything magic and the occult, I loved the demons and action hero priests and nuns with their exorcisms, whip swords(?), and guns. I don't care for religious overtones/undertones in fictional stories, but I actually didn't mind the Christian rites sprinkled in for demon exorcisms. Having the MMC have second thoughts about his religious conviction was actually a nice subplot to read about.

I'll definitely stick around for the next installment.

Thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for this arc.

A fun exorcists-vs-demons storyline with a bit of a mystery -- why do demons want to capture this one young man in particular? The art and action is incredible, it's subtly and pervasively queer, and I loved having a butch as a one of the lead supporting characters. It feels like forever since I've seen a butch character just casually inserted into a story.

The writing is somewhat stilted and awkward, and occasionally doesn't make sense in context (example: a character wonders if another character remembers the demon, character b says "I don't want to talk about the freaky monster thing", and then character a continues to... wonder if he remembered). But if you can get past that, there's a lot of pretty tasty meat in here. I'm looking forward to reading more!

This volume is mostly setup, but I'm definitely intrigued by where this is going. The art is great, and I enjoyed the humor and the characters. The dynamic between Sunny and Erza is already fun, and I can't wait to see how their relationship develops further.

I was emerged in this story, the art was captivating. From the color and drawings, I found myself taking extra time to look at each page after reading. I also really liked the piece of the members of church going after demons. The action was good, it was really entertaining to read.

Covenant follows Ezra, a powerful young exorcist with no faith in God, who is tasked to protect a mysterious man, Sunny, from rising demonic forces. With his church under scrutiny by the great church and the threat of war on the horizon, will Ezra find his conviction in time to keep Sunny safe? Or will they both suffer the consequences?

I really enjoyed this graphic novel, the artwork is so well done! The characters are so lovable and the plot is great, can’t wait for volume two! The humor and sarcasm is what made the story even better. I loved Ezra’s and Samson’s banter. I also really loved how diverse the characters are. I can see a potential romance between Ezra and Sunny and I’m so excited! Can I have volume two, please?!

If you love to read about:

▫️magical tattoos
▫️ gun-wielding exorcists
▫️ great lgbtq+ rep
▫️ beautiful artwork
▫️ likable characters
▫️ humor

then this book is definitely worth reading.

The world, the visuals, the characters - all of it comes together flawlessly in the first volume of this comic by LySandra Vuong!

The art style is contrasted and clean - pleasing to the eye and easy to follow for those of us that struggle with eye fatigue. Those dark undertones reflect wonderfully in the subject manner of this book - this being demons and the priests that have been trained to banish them. The cast of characters introduced here are all fun, charming, and wonderfully queer. I love to see it!

I do find it difficult to comment on plot and structure as this was only Vol. 1. Instead of constructing a full flowing narrative it was focused more on laying the foundation blocks for later building. That being said I had no problem following along and am already invested in these characters and their future!

(P.S. If you are impatient like I am myself, more of this story is available on Webtoon!)

(I was provided a NetGalley ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

3.5/5

While it started pretty generic and one note for my taste in the beginning, Covenant kept me at bay for the latter half of this volume and made me want to know more about it. It took me about 100 pages to be invested in the story, which was a downer in the beginning, but I couldn't stop reading at the end. The characters are likeable, and the story, while very familiar to the supernatural drama enjoyer, hits a note that draws you in for the long run. I can't wait to see where it goes. It feels very cosy.

Huge Thanks to Netgalley and Oni Press for this advanced copy.

Slowburning romance + Action packed comic is finally here!
The art was truly beautiful. All those blurring effect and the lighting were gorgeous. The story was kinda dark but the artist know how to put some gags that made this book felt lighter. However, as a webtoon reader, I found the layout wasn't good enough. I prefer read this in vertical format because it would give me more vibes of the story.

Overall 5/5 for enjoyment of the story and art but 3/5 for the layout

"I believe in demons, for I have seen them. I believe in angels, for I know them. And though I cannot believe god... I can believe in my purpose."

Why is every character in this book so damn hot?

I really enjoyed the art style and overall the vibes of the novel. There were a lot of info dumping at the beginning but near the end I really started to get into the story and I can't wait to see how it progresses from here.

Wonderful. Amazing. And what illustrations.

When I started Covenant, it took me while to get into it but once I was engaged in the story I finished it in one sitting (with my toddler running amok so imagine how hooked I was).

The churches are fighting demons with help of exorcists and these exorcists are not those traditional ones, we see in the movies. They are more like, have you watched Keanu Reeves's movie constantine? Yeah, those vibes but there are many Keanu Reeves in this set-up so better, much better.

The story is gripping and fast paced. I looked for next volume as soon as I finished this. I wanted to know what happened next.

This is an intriguing start to a series! I understand this is (was?) a webtoon, but I hadn't read it before so I was going in with no prior knowledge. This follows a church of exorcists that exorcise demons with the help of angelic blessings that they keep as tattoos. I liked the art style, and the comic has some humor to balance out the serious content. I was a little confused that they all seem to be in college? Regular college? I guess exorcism is their side gig or something. I'll check out the next volume when it's published!

The art was pretty pixelated, but I'm assuming that is just because of the advanced copy.

Thanks to the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

A slow burn queer romance set in a world where the Church doesn't care about human life so long as it can act like it saved the day? How unlike the world we live in! This series is gonna be so fun for my issues with religion, I can tell.
