New Testament Survey by Merrill C. Tenney is a very illuminating and educational book on the whole of the New Testament field. Written in a clear, non-technical style, Dr. Tenney takes his readers through an authoritative survey of the overall social, political, economic, and religious world of the First Century New Testament. In an analytic and historical approach, he carefully examines each book of the New Testament placing each book in its own setting. Indeed, he presents a brilliant compilation and penetrating study of the cannon and text of the early New Testament’s experience and development. It is an excellent book and should be required reading for every serious Bible student.

This is a great survey of the New Testament. I read it mostly as I was taking a NT class which incidentally took a lot of material from this book. The beginning of the book has a good overview of the political history surrounding the NT time and Jewish customs. It is a bit technical, but generally it gives a good flavor for the times surrounding the New Testament and how people lived. The second part of the book has an overview of each book. Each one is 2-3 pages long and have a good overview on what/when/where/who and why. It is especially helpful to learn how each book fits into the context of the history of the church and why it was written. Sometimes it is a bit technical but there is certainly a lot to glean from it.

This is a book that the average Bible reader will find interesting: Who wrote each book of the New Testament? Why was that particular book or letter written and to whom? Where in the Roman Empire were the recipients and the authors located? And what is the probable date each book was written (i.e. the chronological order)? This book is a good and detailed overview; not overly technical but very helpful in giving you a broad panorama of the New Testament and the world in which it first circulated.

very historical, gives important historical information and context explanation for biblical understanding, I really only completed the required reading for school so I cant rightly judge it. I will read the rest as time and reading schedules permit.

Important read for any one wanting to teach and trully understand what the New testament says.

A book studying (in overview) the New Testament. I appreciated learning about the events surrounding the writing of the New Testament. The outlines for each book of the NT were also insightful. (Text book)

I have read a few New Testament introduction or survey books. This is perhaps one of the best for scholars who want a good grasp on the background of the New Testament.
