Every year editor Steve Berman publishes one special collection after gathering the best of previously published gay speculative fiction stories written by a wide variety of authors. I've loved Berman's collections in past years and Wilde Stories 2013 is no exception. This year's volume, however, is memorable for the different and interesting young adult speculative fiction short stories included. They provide this volume with adventure, a touch of whimsy, and yes, an edge that I really enjoyed. ...more

Speculative fiction isn’t like it was when I was a boy. H.G. Wells was just starting out, and Jules Verne was but a pup. Well, not quite that long ago…but it was still called science fiction and wasn’t taken as seriously as it is today. What hasn’t changed is the wonder of it all, and editor extraordinaire Steve Berman has collected some wondrous pieces indeed for his latest edition of Wilde Stories. The opener (“Breakwater in the Summer Dark” by L. Lark) and closer (“Keep the Aspidochelone Floa ...more

Steve Berman, editor of Lethe Press, and Icarus Magazine, and seemingly gold dust if you want to win a Lambda prize for Speculative Fiction, releases Wilde Stories every year. The theme is straightforward: a collection of short speculative fiction featuring gay (male?) protagonists. 2013 is the first collection I’ve read but on the strength of this I’ll be making my back through the years.

Break Water In The Summer Dark by L Lark: In a summer camp by Oxwater Lake, the opening sexuality of two of

I’ve read Mr. Berman’s Wilde Stories since the 2010 edition, and have never been disappointed. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this latest edition, I found it very frivolous and very much below the standards of the first 3 years of this up and coming collection Anthology of Gay Science Fiction and Fantasy.

For the most part these stories are Masturbatory, a story begins, the ‘plot’ which is just beginning is then suddenly lost in the writers ‘stream of consciousness’.

It was easy to find myself w

Once again, I was really impressed with the overall high quality of the stories in this series. There are some great things happening in this subgenre.

After reading a few stories I gave up. The writing just wasn't up to par. The stories didn't hold my attention.

Some tidbits about me...

I turned down a scholarship to Miskatonic University because I heard of the high rate of incidents against the student population.

I briefly worked for Omni Consumer Products in their Marketing Department. Great benefits, nice cafeteria, sadly too prone to executive whim.

Last year I stayed at the noted Mauna Pele resort in Hawaii. The accommodations were impressive but my tr
