Rate this book
The ultimate guide for creatives of all disciplines and levels to discover a sustainable, joyful artistic practice. Whether you are a dabbler, a career creative, or a long-time self-proclaimed "tortured artist," Dr. Merideth Hite Estevez is here to help. As a professional oboist, teacher, creative coach, graduate of The Juilliard School, and beloved host of the podcast Artists for Joy, Dr. Estevez knows the world of creatives and what they truly need to cultivate a life-giving practice. The Artist's Joy offers not only tools for the journey but a deeper understanding of the ways the miracle of creativity works in our lives. Dr. Estevez guides artists at all levels and in all disciplines to build a creative life that resonates deeply with their core values, and to cultivate an artistic practice that is joyful and sustainable. She shares her discoveries and insightful coaching exercises that stem from the belief that when we are connected to what resonates deeply within us, the "tortured artist" trope simply doesn't hold. By looking at creative work through a new lens, she provides us a means to begin--or to begin again--in sustaining ways. Complete with self-coaching questions, a group discussion guide, and a companion playlist with tracks for musical meditation and creative engagement, this is your guide for life as an artist that will resonate long after the last note.

Merideth Hite Estevez is a wonderful teacher, and her writing reflects that beautifully. In The Artist's Joy, she shares personal stories, life applications, and prompts that nurture self-discovery and so much more. This book is not just for artists; it's for anyone looking to connect with their inner creativity. It would make a perfect gift for someone going through a life transition, such as a college graduation. I already know I'll be eagerly anticipating more from this sensitive and generous author. Keep writing, Ms. Estevez!

August 2024. Ive now completed this book. It’s the kind of book that when I closed the back cover I felt like I should immediately start reading it again. It has so much content! There is something for everyone in this very well thought out book.

Thanks to Edelweiss for the advance copy! If you like books like The Artist’s Way, you’ll probably like this one, too. Uses music as the throughline for creativity/creative recovery/life.

Audiobook.

Annoying. Cultish language, writing prompts mixed with lots of quotes. Clearly a lover of Brene Brown.

Was on the recommended list on my library app.

A kind of therapy work book but not by a traditional therapist/counselor. Dr. Meredith Hite Estevez, doctorate in oboe.

Better off with a 30 min Skillshare video about building a routine to get out of a creative block.

This book offers a much-needed infusion of creativity, peace, and joy! For artists and creators who are feeling tired, bewildered, and wearied, Merideth's words invite us to slow down and reconnect with the intrinsic passion that so often gets ignored or buried. My favorite parts were the stories of real life artists whom we can all relate to in some way - and the etudes (exercises/activities) offer opportunities to explore our creativity in new ways.

I loved it!!

I read this book on a recent writing retreat, and every chapter was amazing. The writing is beautiful, the advice carefully crafted, the insights life-changing. I did most of the exercises and found them extremely helpful, even though I’m not the type of person who usually does those. Highly, highly recommend this book to any creative person who has ever struggled with imposter syndrome, burnout, self doubt, or patience with the process. So basically anyone who does any kind of creative anything!

If you read The Artists Way already, this is great refresher that comes at the same topics from a slightly different angle

My only hesitation in writing a review of this book is that I will not do it justice. The Artists Joy (I purchased both a Kindle and hardback edition) occupies a place on my E-reader and bookshelf next to a handful of other books that I can say changed my life. Please don't be deterred from buying the book with the thought "It's not for me because I'm not an artist." As I recommend this book to all of my friends I tell them that this book is for everyone because as Meredith says the most important thing that we're all yearning to create is a joy filled life. Participating in this book, and I use that word "participating" intentionally because this book is not one to merely read. The book is interactional, pointing the way through self-coaching and other reflection/journaling exercises in each chapter. Throughout the book Meredith shares vulnerably, walking alongside the participating reader through personal stories and stories of her coaching clients. I felt like she was speaking directly to me and for me as she focused on healing from perfectionism, shame, perceived failures, lack of self care, and comparison to others. Her creative and engaging format comforted, stretched, affirmed, challenged, guided and, yes, loved me into healing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to those who call themselves artists and those who do not. It is a book I am gifting to many others this year; it is a present to joyfully give yourself.

I read this book while on a choir tour in Europe and I am so glad I chose this book to travel with me. There is a small section that explains who the book is for and she had me hooked when she wrote, “For the one who isn’t even sure if they get to call themselves an artist. (Spoiler alert: they do.)”I felt at times as if Meredith was right inside my head and heart. She knows intimately what the creative mind struggles with and how to navigate one’s way back to joy. It is filled with quotes, personal stories of her life and journal prompts to guide the reader into digging deeper into the creative soul. It touches on subjects like perfectionism, self care and compassion, managing energy, and finding joy in one’s wellness and creativity. I am grateful this book has been written and I highly recommend it.

The Artist’s Joy beautifully joins the tradition of creativity recovery books by linking art with spirituality, self-knowledge, and self-acceptance.

What sets it apart is its realistic, compassionate approach—especially for younger artists and those raising families. Estevez doesn’t romanticize the creative life; she shows how to build one that is sustainable and resonant, even in the midst of everyday demands. As she writes, our art becomes a flotation device, helping us stay afloat and become more fully ourselves. Therefore, creativity is not a selfish endeavor we save for when we "have time"; it is an integral part of who we are as divinely made by the Great Creator.

A wise, encouraging read for anyone trying to make space for creativity in a busy life.

A fresh and accessible complement to The Artist’s Way. You can expect to return to your creative self always with compassion and in a way that meets the moment and your needs. For those who may not connect with the spiritual/religious aspects, there is something for you here—you have permission to name words differently in your mind. Merideth is a generous writer and artist.
And if you have trouble working your way through in a linear fashion, her cohorts offer another way in, or I’ve found value in flipping to a page and seeing what is there for me on a given day.

I absolutely LOVED this book. It so got the creative in me and had me more introspective about myself than maybe I’ve *ever* been — at least when it comes to my art (writing.)

Merideth did a beautiful job laying out each chapter in an organized way with themes, connecting stories, practical application and timeless wisdom.

Anyone who has a craft will benefit from reading this book — and better at it (and for it.) Bravo for a needed and incredible book!

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of "The Artist's Joy." I read it straight through, because I realized quickly that I wanted to read the whole thing before I slow down and reread it to complete the reflection exercises. The experiences Merideth describes and her gentle advice to help artists through the challenges of a creative life felt spot on.

Helpful self-help guidance for creative people experiencing an artistic block. It made me curious and reflective about my own long-held truths and beliefs in my making processes. Where is my joy? How can I recapture it? What blocks do I need to address in order to move forward? What does success look like for me? How can I help others to do the same?

I loved all the musical references and how the book ebbed and flowed before coming to an enlightening crescendo and finale. My Artist's Oath, crafted over the 15 chapters is something I will treasure forever. Thanks, Merideth for bringing more joy to my creative life!

Some good questions to ask yourself at the end of each chapter. A lot of the book just rehashes Brene Brown and The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.

As a long-time lover of Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way, listener of the author's podcast, and multi-passionate artist looking to find deep joy in the creative process, I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this book. And friends, it does not disappoint! Meredith Hite Estevez is the wise and generous voice you've been waiting for calling you to the very best version of yourself as both an artist and a human. Filled with deep insight, gorgeous writing, and meaningful exercises that build one upon the other, the book moves the reader, regardless of their current relationship with creativity, to one of profound joy. This book is a love letter to my inner artist child. It comes with a free printable journal with prompts and exercises to help you to go deeper, and truly incorporate creative healing into your life. It's like having a gifted empath hold your hand and walk you step by step through your creative blocks and obstacles, with a whole toolbox of ideas on how to show up for yourself with grace and love. I was lucky enough to join the author's Artists's Joy Creative Cluster and work through the book's concepts in community which took it to a whole other level.

This was terrific! Perfectionism and elitism have robbed many of us of the joy of creating art. This can lead to artistic paralysis. The author offers practical steps to get unstuck and re-engage with the joy of creation.
