DNFed at 25% ... This was really not what I anticipated.
Why do I keep falling for stories including fae? Maybe because I hope one day I might find one that will enchant me just as Karen Marie Moning Fever series did once. Unfortunately, this book rather disappoints. As it is, the story lacks originality. Miss little special finds and saves fae prince, epic battle ensues ... Yawn!
I did not particularly care about the main character. Her voice is more or less unlikable. She is kind of a know-it all but still manages to do stupid things. Also who would leave a 16 year old alone for several days/weeks to go to Schottland? Right, her uncle and his family.
Yeah ok, I would so think the same presented with a fae prince. LOL
And then the writing. It's all present tense, which makes for a really annoying read!

I watch his chest move beneath his armour and wonder what the hell he (the fae prince) was doing in my forest in the small hours of the morning . I need to rest and recoup so that I can go join my cousins up in Scotland; I don’t need this. Whatever this is.

I feel it's only fair to mention in my review that I have known Liz for about 4 years now and consider her a friend, as much as I've tried not to let that effect my review I do think it's something I should be open and honest about. Now I've got that little disclaimer out of the way let me tell you all the reasons that Banished is a must read novel for urban fantasy fans!
Kit Blackhart has only recently become aware of her family's calling to protect humanity from the monsters that prey on us. She didn't grow up with the majority of her family and it was only when her grandmother was murdered by the fae that Kit discovered that monsters were real and that she was born to fight them. Sent to live with her uncle and cousins Kit has had a steep learning curve to deal with. Not only is she still discovering all the different fae species she also has to learn how to use her magical abilities as well as train with various weapons so she can defeat them. Recovering at home after her first solo mission Kit is disappointed not to be included in the latest battle her family are facing but she soon finds herself in over her head when a fae prince is attacked just outside their property. With her family out of contact Kit is in a difficult position, does she put herself in danger to save prince Thorn and is there anyone she can trust to help her?
I found Kit was a really likeable heroine, she has been thrown in at the deep end and doesn't have as much training as the rest of her family but what she lacks in knowledge she makes up for in guts and determination. I love the fact that she isn't perfect, she makes mistakes and doesn't always have the answers she needs but she never stops trying and fighting for what she believes in. The reader is introduced to a lot of the different species of fae alongside Kit and I loved the sheer variety of creatures she comes across on her journey, you really never can tell what is going to crop up next and I was constantly caught by surprise. My slight niggle was the instant attraction between Kit and Thorn but thankfully there is very little in the way of romance so we have no crazy declarations of love between them. They obviously have a connection and there is definitely potential for a forbidden romance to develop but that is taking a back seat to the action packed storyline - just the way I like it!
Kit isn't the only well fleshed out character either, I enjoyed the bond she shares with her cousins and seeing her get to know her family better. Kit is a newcomer so is still trying to find her place in the family dynamics but there is obviously a lot of love and respect amongst them all. I also really liked Thorn and had a lot of fun seeing how out of place he was in the human realm where he hasn't spent time before. Banished is a fast paced story full of action and adventure and it's a fabulous debut novel from Liz de Jager. I absolutely can't wait to see where she takes the story next!

'You just never know what might lurk in the dark...'Fans of Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey series are in for a treat with this new YA series.
Liz de Jager's Banished serves up a healthy dose of fae magic, adventure & romance that will have you dying to join the Blackhart family. From it's gorgeous cover to its addictive storyline, this book has everything - a badass heroine, lots of shining weapons & cute paranormal guys.
What more could you ask for?!
The one thing you could ask for was for the author to have not included that extremely heartbreaking Chapter 49. I am a fervent Kithorn shipper and I'm going to be devastated if they don't end up together in future books...
And if anyone asks why I want Kit with Thorn, and not with Aiden, the answer is simple: he's mine! Aiden is a walking Greek god & I think we were honestly meant to be ;)
So if you're looking for an amazing book, arm yourself & raid your local library for a copy of Banished today!

i really didn't expect to love this but i did *if the sequels were also sold for 1 euro, i would have gotten them.i didn't care enought for them to spend 9euros for each book*.shit reminds me so much of Mortal Instruments/Dark Artifices.Blackharts here,Blackthorns there,fae here,fae there.i mean yeah YA books are all the same shit but these two are just really similar *probably why i loved this*.what i loved were these tiny paragraphs that were in the start of almost every chapter.they gave u some info about the supernatural world and shit *if u show or read anything like Vampire Diaries or TMI u will know the info that she provides but it's still interesting & fun*.

This book is much better than most urban fantasy involving fae. It is fast paced, and packed with plenty of action. The monsters/creatures that Kit faces in this book are extremely imaginative and are described to the reader with great attention to detail. I would have enjoyed the book a bit more if the main characters were better developed, but in all fairness the character development was actually pretty typical for a novel as fast paced as this one.
There are some dark elements to this novel, including monstrous creatures reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft, and plenty of violence, but overall I would still describe it as a fun read. There are more lighthearted elements than dark ones, so the novel's tone still ends up being upbeat.
I also found a few scenes and phrases in the book to be a bit awkward and cliched, but the story's sense of rapid adventure made sure that these sections did not stand out too much.
I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who loves urban fantasy, and doesn't mind an undercurrent of a love story. I am certainly planning on reading more books in this series in the future.

What fun and enjoyable paranormal fantasy! The main character, Kit, is a tough teenager who fights monsters of all kinds, in fact her whole family does. Enter the Blackhart family - whom I didn't get to know nearly as much as I wanted to, but I'm sure the sequel will deliver! I surprisingly liked Kit and didn't find her at all annoying. Then there is also Thorn, the fae prince, yip a faerie prince whom Kit has to protect. Together they go on a crazy adventure that defies reality.
This book had so many fantastical creatures in it and was full of magic and wonder! There was almost every supernatural creature in this one, everything except vampires, which made for a nice change. But other than the creatures, this book was fast paced, action packed and had some really great scenes!
Each chapter has this very handy definition of a creature or place, which I loved! I found myself going back to chapter beginnings just to read about a creature again and brush up on my lore. If I had to compare this book to something, I would say the The Mortal Instruments series, not because of the people, but more because there is a 'mansion' as home base and because of all the supernatural creatures! Either way, don't let this deter you, I think it added something special to the book.
The quotes in this book are hilarious and the cover and titles of this series are going to look great on my bookshelves! Seriously, the cover is gorgeous! There is so much intricate detail that you don't notice until you hold it in your hands.
Definitely a book that surprised and delighted! I wasn't sure this genre still held anything for me, boy was I wrong.

Strong start, but it lost a lot of steam towards the middle for a good 2/3rds of the book. I wasn't as engaged with the writing as I should be. Also, I felt there was almost too much in terms of types of creatures that are appearing in the book.
I liked Kit though and all the characters in it an awful lot. All in all, it was good, but I wanted better. Full review to come.

If you love fantasy novels you will devour this. World building is immense, main character Kit is kick-ass and the boys are super hot. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Full disclosure: The author Liz de Jager is a very dear friend. This doesn't mean I haven't read this novel critically, because I have. In fact I think I might have read it even more critically than I would usually read a debut, as I kept weighing whether I liked things because I liked them or whether I liked them because of who the author was. But to avoid any accusations of bias, I did want to mention it upfront. That being said, let's get on with the review.
Banished is the first book in the Blackhart Legacy trilogy. The premise of the book could not have been more tailored to my likes than it was. A family of monster hunters trying to keep the peace and humanity safe from the more dangerous fae, set in a world that is our world but where fairy tales are not just tales, but part of the Otherwhere, a supernatural world that is linked to ours. Book, you had me at hello. Combine this premise with an awesome set of characters and there was no way I wasn't going to enjoy Banished.
De Jager creates a world quite close our own, but with significant differences. The fae world, or Otherwhere, is real. We share our world with supernatural creatures and not all of them are cute and cuddly. Much of the lore incorporated is traditional; there are Sidhe of the Seelie and Unseelie courts, there are phookahs, werewolves, banshees, brownies, dragons and other familiar supernatural creatures. Inhabitants of the Otherwhere are allergic to iron and metal and time between our world, the Frontier, and the Otherwhere tends to run differently. However, de Jager also incorporates fun, original elements as well. Such as the reason and manner for the divide between the Frontier and the Otherwhere and the fact that Fae are allergic to coffee, which has a highly stimulatory effect on certain parts of them. These bits of lore are dropped into the narrative in conversation or in a more formal way at the start of several of the chapters, through the use of lemma's explaining some element of the Fae world. These usually gave a small clue as what to expect and it allowed for exposition without info-dumping in an intrusive way.
This interesting world is inhabited by a great cast of characters. First and foremost, there is our protagonist, Kit. She was raised away from her Blackhart family and, at the start of the book, has only found out about them eighteen months ago. She's a wonderful character with a very clear voice. She's strong, wilfully, a little (a lot) impulsive and she can snark with the best of them. She's also at times a little out of her depth, not having been raised steeped in the family lore and having a rare magical gift that no-one seems to be able to teach her to use. One of her impulsive actions is saving Thorn from a bunch of redcaps, which lands her in a completely different pot of trouble and as her family members are all away, she left to solve it on her own. Thorn, for his part, is a lovely male lead. Mysterious, princely and charming, he's actually a good guy, who respects Kit's abilities and doesn't crimp her style. They are joined by Aiden, youngest of the Garrett clan, a family of werewolves living in London. He's funny, irreverent and a bit of a lad and I absolutely adored him. The three of them go in search for their families, who seem to have disappeared up North.
Speaking of family, I loved Kit's family. Her cousins, twins Megan and Marc, and their younger brother Kyle are wonderful and madcap. I especially liked geeky, lore-loving Kyle. He actually reminded me a lot of Criminal Minds' Spencer Reid, who've I've had a TV crush on for years now. Kit's Uncle Jamie is lovely and seems to be a father figure, even if he's gone for most of the book. Then there are another Aunt and Uncle, who live in the States, and Aunt Letitia, the family archivist, none of whom we get to meet in person, but who we'll hopefully meet in more detail in the next book, as I'd love to spend more time with the extended Blackhart family.
I've said Kit has a really distinct and strong voice, but so does De Jager. For me reading this book was extra fun, not to mention a little strange, as there were turns of phrase or words that made me chuckle, because she uses them in real life as well. De Jager's writing is lovely and smooth, and she has a wonderful ear for dialogue. The banter between Kit, Thorn, and Aiden is delicious and Banished had me laughing out loud in places. But it's not just the funny dialogue she gets right, it's also the more formal speech we get in the fae realm. Not to mention her action scenes. She's clearly done her research into sword and knife-fighting and hand-to-hand combat and it shines through in all of the fights, of which there are quite a number.
I did have some niggles, of course. I kept wondering why Istvan, who is revealed to be one of the bad guys early on in the book, would do what he did and wondering when De Jager was going to explain things. Which she does, eventually, but as Istvan is revealed as a traitor in Chapter Six, it nagged at me almost the entire book. Additionally, I missed a fat hook leading into the next book. Obviously, it's clear there will be a next book, as this is book one in a trilogy, but it isn't really clear where the next book will be headed. Banished is a really self-contained story which on the one hand is good, because cliff-hangers kill me, I have no patience, but on the other it makes me wonder well now what? Where can Kit go after pitting herself against the Elder Gods? Then again Buffy managed to save the world each season as well, so hey… And if one of my complaints is actually just I want MOAR! in a rather circuitous way, then that’s not necessarily a bad thing, right?
Banished gave me ALL. THE. FEELS. and while not perfect, it's a wonderful story and a great debut. In Kit, De Jager has created an amazing character, whose potential has only been partially mined in Banished and who can only become stronger in the next Blackhart Legacy book, tentatively titled Vowed. I love Kit and the world De Jager has created and I can't wait to read more. Vowed is expected to be published in November and I wish it was sooner!

I really enjoyed this one. When I picked it up I had never heard of it before so my expectations were low, but it definitely surpassed them. This book is about Fae and magical creatures. It's highly influenced by folklore and mythology. It combined so many old stories and myths. I loved how our world and the magical world intertwined. The characters were also very likeable. The first half of the book was just okay. But the second half was amazing! It was full of action and plot twists that I didn't see coming. I loved the magical world. An aspect of this book that I wasn't a fan of was the instant love between two characters. It was too sudden. I read the sampler pages of Banished online and knew it was one I had to read. It took me a while to get the book, and then to actually make a start on it, my incentive was having the second book, Vowed, on netgalley for review.
I began reading Banished with no idea what to expect, and it wasn't long before the real action started. The first few chapters were just the build up to an amazing story as we follow Kit as she takes an epic journey to find her family and save a lost prince, think the journey from Lord of the Rings, only its not a ring to get rid of but a lost prince prince to find, with less walking and more driving, and there are no hobbits, just fae, witches, wolves, and every other magical creature you can think of (I'm sure you get the idea I'm trying to paint for you). This is a journey of epicness that leaves you wanting more from this author (and thankfully I have the next one waiting).
Thorn, the seventh son of a seventh son, is supposed to be some all lucky and powerful person, yet luck has managed to elude him until he is saved from a redcap attack by Kit. Kit, recent heir to the Blackhart Legacy is only just learning of this whole other world around her, and jumps into the foray with no thought of the consequences she will be left to face. Together, with the help of Aiden, a wolf, and Olga, a witch, this team of misfits must find a way to stop the human world from being taken over, find their friends, and just survive each hour as best they can.
This quote made me giggle, and I really like how it was mentioned at various times throughout the rest of the book. Another thing really liked was that most of the chapters had little snippets from various sources about the different types of magical creatures, or magical related aspects of the story. We get a glimpse into bits of the past, and a handy reference to what will be faced in the upcoming chapters.
While Banished did take me longer than expected to read due to a hectic few days, I devoured it every chance I got. Liz has done an amazing job of drawing you into this world she has created, whilst allowing you to picture it yourself. Her characters are likeable and you can't help but want them to win at everything they face. She has done such a great job of making you love this world, that the shock towards the end wasn't one I expected, it completely came out of the blue. Did I mention I am so glad I have the next book in the series to read.

Because no one said there was going to be kissing. I signed up for fighting and punching people in the head but no kissing. Unless I have to kiss Kit, but not you, Thorn. I don't think I'd like to kiss you at all. I hope you're not offended.

So I got a proof of this way back but I thought I'd hold of reviewing it till it was out and Voila! It is, so you should go and buy it! But seriously It's an amazing book. Now I'm not just saying that because I've met the author but I really mean it. It's honestly like nothing you'll ever read before.
I'm not sure how to describe. If you took maybe the mortal interments, lord of the rings and then just throw in some modern YA Paranormal fiction with a bucket of romance and feels I guess you'd get this. There is nothing like this out there on the market and it's such a new and great idea I couldn't help but fall in love with it from page 1.
I loved the story idea. The plot it so intricate and beautiful and the novel just has so much packed into it. There wasn't a page that went by in which nothing happened. There was always some action of mystery to keep the pages turning and you on the edge of your seat.
The books follows Kit Blackheart who belongs to a family of demon fighting, prince saving superhero (to put it lightly). Anyway she saves a prince, gets attacked by tons of monsters and get drawn into a insanely awesome story.
I had no issues following the story but I loved how it was complex enough to keep me guessing and to never give too much away.
The setting in this never stayed the same for too much because they were always on the move but one thing I did love is seeing how so many of the normal places in England were warped into these ulterior magical places.
The writing was extremely good. I'm a lover of descriptive prose and this book did it for me. Liz De Jager ha a way with words, building up these magical locations and characters to the utmost detail. Her writing made worlds appear in my head and I absolutely loved it.
Also the way she handled and the characters and emotions in her writing was perfection. It was consistent, strong and I couldn't held but adore it.
The characters in this book were a pleasure to read about. Each had a distinct voice, though it was from Kit's POV, and you instantly knew who you liked and didn't. All the characters had good foundations and Jager delved back into their histories to give you a better understanding of each character and this made them more real and human.
What I loved was how she led you to believe that certain characters were certain people when in fact they're not at all and she has mastered the art of twist and turns because this book had shocked and surprised on so many occasions.
Overall I absolutely adored this novel down to the very last pages. It had me up till the darkest hours of night so I could find out what happened next and I will be recommending this to all my friends because it was absolutely totally fabulous.

Banished - The Blackhart Legacy
I just found out when i was searching for the this book to review it - Banished is a reeallly common book title. There must at least 25 books with the word 'banished' in the title, probably more.
Anyway, getting onto the actual review - this book had great potential. The world of the Fae and the human realm are at peace and there is a family of talented humans who help the police the unruly fae in the normal world, which is to basically kick their ass back to the Otherwhere (the name for the Fae realm) if they get out of line. And their not the only ones, there are witches and dragons and werewolves and a Spook Sqaud who for the government and do something similar to the Blackharts.
So you can see how much i was expecting from this book with so many elements in it. And mostly the book was good. I mean Ms. de Jager has done a good job with world building. The setting of the book isn't exactly original but it was still strong and clear and interesting. The author introduces us to the world of Banished and it's host of characters neatly throughout the book, so i didn't have to blunder about connecting the bits of information scattered randomly (that has happened in too many books for my liking).
And the characters weren't unappealing either. Kit was a good heroine - brave and clear-headed, though a little iffy with strategy. I just didn't love her. Maybe she was a little too level-headed for me. I like my heroines to be bad-ass and snarky. The same way i like my heroes - though they do have to be smouldering hot. And good dash of humour would help too. Sadly, Thorne was really any of this - except for the hotness. He's sweet and nice, and he's seems to have been the short end of the stick, considering his own uncle trying to kill him because he might doom them all, based on some obscure prophecy, but.... well, he doesn't do anything drool worthy in the book. Mostly it's Kit who's running around trying to save him.
The chemistry between Kit and Thorne was lacking a little sizzle for my taste. After Aiden the werewolf is introduced to the storyline, i was hoping that Kit and him would get together, but.. that didn't happen. Too bad, 'coz he was my favourite character in the book.
Thorne does get slightly more interesting towards the middle of the book, but that wasn't enough for me to do a 180 on my review of him.
So, not a bad book by far, the storyline kept me interested till the end, but i didn't particularly love the main characters. I would still read the second book to see what happens next, since some questions are left unanswered about Kit and Thorne's strange powers.

Banished was another of my most highly anticipated books of 2014, and so I was delighted when I won a copy from the publisher. A blend of Maggie Stiefvater’s Lament, with the intensity and passion of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, you really need to watch out for this trilogy.
Kit is part of the impressive Blackhart family. Trained to fight, Kit isn’t any normal person, for her family fights enemy Fae. When the prince of Alba, the Fae world, needs rescuing, things turn from bad to worse because Kit has to face a lot more than a rogue Fae. Fae battle Fae in a war that threatens the human world and Kit has to fight for those that she holds dearest.
By far the thing that made me love Banished so much was Kit herself. She takes charge and really drove the story on. Her voice was so clear and shone through, unwavering in its consistency. Kit was very action-driven and I loved reading about her.
I also loved reading about Kit’s cousins. I really hope we get to see more of them in future novels because from the parts we saw them in during Banished they seem really awesome. Why can’t I be a Blackhart?!
I loved the inclusion of snippets of information about the lore and traditions before some of the chapters. It offered a really great insight into the world de Jager has created, which I can’t wait to hear more about in future books. I love it!
I’ve always been a huge fan of mythology and folklore so it’s not a surprise how much I loved the Fae world. De Jager has put her on spin on it, Banished being a truly unique novel. I just want more!
The plot is thrilling and there’s so much packed into one book. There are lots of plot twists and the climax was just amazing. The last 100 pages or so had me on the edges of my seat because I was so engrossed in the story. After reading the ending, I was left wanting more because it was just so good.
There were a few things I disliked, but I think this is mostly down to the fact that I haven’t been reading much lately and so it’s weird to be back in a fictional world again. On reflection though, I really loved the story and think everyone will really enjoy it.
You should definitely read Banished if you’re a fan of fantasy and the like. Even if you’re not, there is so much you can take out of this novel and I can see it being really popular once it’s released. Read it, read it, read it!

I have to state before you read my review that I do actually know Liz De Jager. She was very much a pioneer in the UKYA book blogging community and her imput is sorely missed. Now I guess you are thinking that my review will be biased because I know Liz. Well you couldn’t be more wrong. I was extremely nervous about reading this book; I was worried that I might not like it, that it might not live up to the early wide spread love already gained. In fact, I did speak to Liz via email before reviewing it and she knew I would be honest with my review.
As soon as I started reading it, I was surprised by it. Firstly it wasn’t what I was expecting. I was convinced it was higher fantasy when in actual fact, it was more urban fantasy set in the UK. From the very first chapter I was completely engrossed in Kit’s story and my word, she is one butt kicking character! She makes every young lad she meets looks weak in comparison. She is afraid of nothing and really ignites this story. There is obviously more to Kit than we find out in this book and I am looking forward to hearing more about her past in the next book.
The world building for this book is amazing. I knew Liz had a love for folklore and legend, but it really shines through in this book, as her knowledge is so detailed, adding an intricate level to the story.
The plot is fast paced and there were a few times I found myself holding my breath. Could Kit and Thorn save the day? How on earth would they get out of each explosive situation? And yet each time, they did. They solved it. If you think this might be a case of insta-love, think again. Although the relationship between Kit and Thorn develops within the book, it is a slow burning need for each other. They rely heavily on each other, before even a glint of romance appears.
I really really loved this book. I can hold my hand up and say that I loved it more than Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, which is something I never ever thought I would say. It feels like Liz has not only successfully created urban fantasy set in the UK, but she has smashed it! I want more, I need more! I am desperate for Book 2, even though Banished didn’t end on an almighty cliff hanger. You can tell that Liz has listened to the YA market as well as encompassing her own knowledge to create a fast paced, explosive book that captures your imagination and leaves you wanting more.

I got sent a copy of this from the publisher (THANK YOU!). I had heard of Liz online from her blog and I believe met her at an author event in London once, so was excited to see a name I knew on a book. The blurb sounded awesome too, really my sort of read. I couldn't wait to get stuck in.
Meet Kit Blackhart, tough girl and monster killer. Until recently Kit was what you could call 'normal' she had no idea about her family past or her magic powers, but when her nan is killed in a house fire her Uncle Jamie comes for her and explains it all. With lots of training and sleepless nights she is now part of their team to track down dark fae and other creatures. This book really has all you could want - fae, trolls, dragons, magic, goblins, etc. An awesome blend of magic and myth brought to reality.
Then we are introduced to Thorn, a Fae Prince who is on the run and ends up being attacked outside Kit's house. She rushes to his rescue not knowing who he is, the pair then end up travelling together to stop a Fae war that could end all wars!
I loved Kit, she is uncertain at times and totally not perfect, she can be indecisive, makes some silly decisions and gets in no end of trouble, but she is also brave, loyal, feisty and a real tough girl, she won't give up no matter what. She is really relate-able and I felt myself routing for her almost right from the start.
Thorn is a bit more of a mystery, he seems to hide parts of his personality, he's a bit more guarded but this means that you get to know him gradually throughout the book and in a way I liked him more for it. He remained a bit elusive which intrigued me and I wanted to get to know him better.
The whole host of characters are well represented and enough is given about the side characters to keep you interested in them and wondering what is happening with them.
This book is exciting and will keep you on the edge of your seat, with excellent settings and descriptions you will picture yourself running right alongside Kit and Thorn, totally immersed in the world. Trust me, you won't be able to put it down. A perfect mix of adventure, magic, fighting and romance presented for your enjoyment!

Full disclosure on this one: Liz is my friend and I’ve championed her from the start, but I’ve tried very hard not to let that get in the way of a fair review. I just genuinely loved it.
Nearly every type of mythical creature that pops to mind when you think of urban fantasy, and some that won’t, play a role in Banished: fae, redcaps, goblins, trolls, chimera. All present and correct. And you can really see how much research Liz put into learning everything she could about them so she could manipulate them to her story without losing their essence. I still really want to rescue a fae prince, by the way. It just always ends in spine-tingling kisses and dangerous adventures and I’m completely up for that.
The extracts from archived records about each of the creatures and elements of the mythology of Banished were included at the beginning of chapters – I really love it when authors do that. I also think it’s a really great way of introducing them to readers who are perhaps new to the genre or mythology itself. They also provided a nice contrast to some of the mythical beings we actually got to know. I love Thorn. It’s so unusual to have a fae prince as a love interest and him not be cold, hard and slightly murderous; the slightly bashful and rather human Thorn was refreshing. Can I have one?
I can’t write a review of Banished without mentioning Kit. She’s completely badass. It’s been a while since I’ve come across a character who runs headfirst into a fight so recklessly! Her need to protect her loved ones and combat evil is brilliant, but I most loved that she still wasn’t completely comfortable with her new world. Unlike lots of other urban fantasies, we join Kit after the big reveal of her involvement in a secret world; late enough that she’s gained her footing a little, but not too late to miss her discomfort with her abilities.
Banished is a compulsive, accomplished and brilliantly imagined debut. The lady will go far. Well done, Liz.

This was my first time coming across a book looking at the world of Fae as warriors. I am sure that they are plenty out there but for me that was quite a refreshing read.
I have been so used to the vampire werewolf and witch trio being always at war that I have never considered the fae’s warrior’s spirit, no doubt overshadowed by their reputation as tricksters.
So without further ado, I would like to welcome you to the “Otherwhere” where ancient magic and magical creatures of all sorts reside. A world separated by a very fine mystical membrane where our own non-magical world known as the “Frontier”, sees unauthorised visitors slipping through the cracks way too often.
One particular family amongst others is tied to both worlds. They are The Blackharts, with their newest member Kit Blackhart who is not only untrained but unusually bestowed with a magic she is unfamiliar with. She is thrown in the family business of hunting all magical law breakers to send them back to the Otherwhere.
Apart from being highly entertaining, if you just like me enjoy a good piece where the author provides, although a familiar world, her own version of that world, you will not be disappointed. Liz de Jager has constructed historical records of ancient magical history so rich that it needed its own secret government organisation to record it through centuries, giving it a real “Buffy” feel. However, this is where the similarities to the pop culture reference ends.
My only tiny winy bit of criticism however is Kit’s journey to Scotland that I found personally a little long winded.
Aside from that, I absolutely loved Kit. Her story is a lovely one of coming of age where strength and resilience is at the core. You will meet a Kit stripped of everything she holds dear trying to find herself as a young woman in a world she barely knows. The expression “through the eyes of a child” comes to mind here.
“The Blackhart Legacy” is definitely a series to watch. I for myself cannot wait to read it all.
Lovers of YA fantasy will absolutely love it
I have been so used to the vampire werewolf and witch trio being always at war that I have never considered the fae’s warrior’s spirit, no doubt overshadowed by their reputation as tricksters.

Wow. I mean, I like being surprised by a book, but I have to say I was really surprised by this one. Not only did my expectations of the book got proved wrong (because I wasn't necessarily sure whether this book would be my cup of tea or not), but I also found myself really, really enjoying this book as well, even when - at times - the book ran a little slow for me. Just. Wow. This book gets one very satisfied nod from me personally. I really liked this one!
With a simliar vibe to the likes of Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instrument series and a tad of Jana Oliver's The Demon Trappers series, I think anyone a fan of the supernatural genre or of those mentioned series above, will have the time of their lives with this book because it's a lot of fun to read and for once this particular new series doesn't contain heavy romance - though there is a potential romance in the works between two main characters (which are now my OTP), so I'm looking forward to seeing how that develops in future books.
Overall and without spoiling the book, while the ending of this book is still killing me (mostly because I want to find out more about the characters and where they will end up), but let's just say this book was such a pleasant surprise for me and with great development in both the characters and in the setting itself, along with a nice touch of the supernatural elements, I think this book will be an instant favourite with its readers.

I enjoyed the start far more than the rest. When I start page counting you've lost me. I should have finished this book in half the time, but so many things that ordinarily don't distract me were preferable to reading *sheepish* One of my favorite background noises while reading are Disney movies. Something with good music is preferable, but I had 'Spooky Buddies' still unwrapped. It shouldn't have grabbed my interest over a book, but it did. Oops. I also did the washing up! ;)
Still, there are plenty of good things, even though the middle and ending are tediously long. Kit is strong, not your average YA female. There is some definite potential in the world building and the characters. The writing is pretty good at time, even when it falls into tedium there occasional bursts of interest. I might not be rushing out when the second book comes out, but it also wasn't the worst book I've read this year. Three stars.

I picked up this book for the sole reason that it said 'for the fans of Buffy'. I wasn't expecting much but I loved it! It was fast paced and unputadownable
The characters were all unique and interesting and the plot moved you along nicely.
As with all first books that are due to be a series there was a lot of world building, however sometimes I find this a bit to much that authors try to cram to much information down your throat and that you are left confused and disorientated. I didn't find that with this one though. You have enough information to get an idea of the world but not too much that it leaves your head spinning.
All in all a brilliant start to a series that I think will be on par with the mortal instruments!

Absolute, unashamed gloriously good fun.
Fabulous characters and a non-stop roller-coaster of a plot. Liz manages to deftly turn scenes on their head, shifting effortlessly from action to humour and back again, with Fae princes, werewolves and assorted other beasties and creatures (not to mention the odd Elder God), all of which are there to help (or mostly hinder) our heroine Kit Blackhart along the way. Oh, and a dragon. :-)
Classic girl-meets-boy-who-turns-out-to-be-a-Fae-prince. Cross Buffy with Harry Dresden, add a touch of Lovecraftian elder gods and simmer gently for 400 pages. Serve hot.
And this is just book one! Book two please, Liz. Quick as you like. :-)

Banished is a fast-paced fantasy which combined with a feisty heroine, enchanting Faerie prince and a believable Faerie world makes it a book not to be missed.
The sprinklings of betrayal and treachery just lift it to further heights like the hundreds and thousands on a cupcake!
Oh and did I mention that Liz de Jager is a fellow South African? And no this did not influence my review!

This storyline has been done a billion times over, sometimes better & sometimes worse. I thought the writing was good which is why I continued the story even once I had figured out where it was going (very, very early on). I thought the price was a bit steep to be honest, I really couldn't justify it.

LOVED all the different mythologies. Especially, the little journal entries talking about the different sorts of creatures in the beginning of the chapters. Now, to do some research on this seventh son of the seventh son business.

I tend to either love or hate fantasy books, and Banished definitely fell in the 'love' camp. Fast paced and lots of fun. Kit is a wonderful, funny main character, and I can't wait to read where book two takes her and Thorn.
