A text for one-semester, introductory biochemistry courses, including courses for allied health students (nursing, pharmacy, dentistry). Ideal for instructors who want a strong chemical focus to explain how and why biological reactions happen. *NEW - Chapter on recombinant DNA technology teaches theory and practice in this important area. *NEW - Now includes carefully crafted end-of-chapter problems that are designed to test understanding of core concepts. Complete, step-by-step solutions are presented in an appendix. *NEW - Reorganization places a new chapter on nucleic acid structure immediately before the molecular biology section, and photosynthesis immediately after oxidative phosphorylation. *NEW - Condensed chapters on amino acid, lipid, and nucleotide metabolism stress core concepts. *NEW - Thoroughly revised and updated throughout to maintain the standard of currency and accuracy set by the previous edition. *NEW - Interactive problem-solving and other relevant material on the home page.
