Are you concerned about emergencies or crisis events, and how to survive them? If so, The Bug Out Book by Ted Riley is the book for you. It is an excellent primer on the concept of bugging out, or getting out of Dodge. What I really appreciated was his honesty about if a situation occurs, bugging IN may very well be the best bet. He outlines some situations that might necessitate bugging out, helps you decide what to pack (from clothes to communications, shelter to defense, health and hygiene to food and water), and figuring out when to go and where to go. He even brings up topics such as traveling with pets, restocking from a cache, and other more complicated topics that might not have crossed your mind. The bug out planning section is particularly helpful and ensures all your family members have necessary phone numbers and know the plan. In short, this book provides a thorough strategy to get you ready for an emergency. I highly recommend adding it your library and using it to guide your own preparedness efforts.

We live in uncertain times. Every household should have some basic preparations in place. Too often, when someone hears words like "prepping" or "bug out," they think of people preparing for the end of the world or for the zombie apocalypse. But in reality, anything could happen to any one of us at any time. Natural disasters such wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, flooding, and volcanoes; civil unrest; solar flares; a house fire or eviction; a terrorist attack along the lines of 9/11; war. The reality is that we will all experience times of emergency. It may look different from household to household. The situation may last hours, weeks, or months. But it is wise to be prepared for such eventualities. Consider it an insurance policy.

But where does one begin? That is where Ted Riley's book comes in! This book (and his other books) are the blueprint for your preparations.

I find it humorous that Ted Riley primary survival strategy is bugging in, but his bug out book is the one with the most helpful information. He does walk you through the decision making process, ideas for locations and transportation, planning routes, and more, including what to include in a bug out bag.

But he’s so over-the-top.

Who has the time to plan and practice multiple routes carrying your BOB? And I mean many many practice runs, including having another family member check your map directions for ease of understanding.

And don’t forget to hide supply caches on the way to your bug out location. Be sure to mark up two maps in code so only someone with both halves of the map can find your treasure.

He consistently refers to the other books in his series and, just like in the those other books, he begs his audience for reviews.

His audience is people preparing for doomsday, who probably don’t need his books with their generalizations. If you’re looking to prepare for a natural disaster, keep looking for other resources. Riley’s not your guy.

This book has a LOT to unpack. Its not light reading, one and done, but rather an excellent resource to keep on hand and continually learn from. But, heres a question... will we be able to access our e-readers under emergency? Yikes. I get the prepared necessity, but still....

Good way to get ready for anything

I liked the simple breakdown and the very thorough explanations and examples to get started with not just your bug out bags but the full plan including backups..even backups to the backup. I hope this is never needed but gets you ready for anything.

After a year of getting ready I figured this book would confirm I was set. Turns out I made a dozen pages of notes. Ideas, missed items, new ways to problem solve and an easy read to boot!

Ted Riley had added another fantastic guide to his survival series. This book is not your average scare tactic survival book. It's a common sense guidebook on preparing your home and family for an emergency situation.
Defining all types of emergencies, weather; flood, fire or mudslide
Violence; war, riots, disease etc, the author discusses the safety and risks of bugging in vs bugging out, and how to make the decision when it's time to leave.
He takes you through preparing you and your family ( and even your pet!) for the bug out, making plans for the trip, how to prepare physically and how to survive along the way...

Although this book is part of a series, there is still enough information to be a strong stand-alone book and is an excellent resource for library.
