While this book does not offer robust scholarship or especially unique insight into its subject matter, it is nonetheless effective in capturing the experience of loneliness. And though I am unlikely to read this again, it was nonetheless effective in making me feel less alone in my loneliness.
Tangentially, it also acted as an interesting glimpse into the culture of the 1970's, including trends in psychotherapy and the prominence of the "human potential movement" in its myriad forms.
Whether that is enough to recommend this to someone else, it's hard to say. I somewhat absentmindedly added it to my "want to read" shelf when going through another friend's book list (she rated it 4 stars if memory serves), then added it to my list of relatively obscure books to check out from the local library, then checked it out because loneliness was an especially resonant topic in that moment. I certainly don't regret reading it, but it was not essential reading.
I read this during the time I am caring for my terminally ill mother. It is a good look at an experience many women went through during a time when I was so much younger. It was interesting in this way as well as the insight into the meanings and reactions to lonliness in the human species. Reccommend to everyone, particularly women and remember that it was written in another time and place.
A great thorough exploration of the various kinds of loneliness, how different people have it manifest in themselves and how they react to it differently and most importantly plenty of great advice on what to do about it.
