I read this because I really like geography and wanted to see what the offerings for kids are. This is definitely for older children, but far too young for teenagers. It's sort of a textbook, but it really isn't very dry at all. Even despite all the corny humor and attempts at storytelling that fall flat, there's a lot of interesting things in here. I ended up learning stuff as well, which is always a good sign.

I don't know if anybody could convince a kid who isn't already curious about geography and maps to read this though. But for a kid showing interest in maps, buy her several and get her a copy of this book to go along with it. You definitely should have maps handy.
