258 books2,575 followersI live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.
My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.
No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)
That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!
And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)
Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.
Glory is not amused.
She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

It didn't live up to her earlier Wings in the Night books but it was an enjoyable story. It just didn't have the depth and power of the earlier series. This one had mainly character introductions with a bit of a love story thrown in the middle. I felt that Seth, the hero, appeared very young. In some scenes it seemed more like he was an adolescent teenager instead of a man in his early twenties, which is what I think he was supposed to be. I prefer my heroes to be a bit older. He just didn't seem to have the maturity needed for the part he was supposed to play.
I am not a big fan of the female, Briar. She did have a horrible life but it didn't allow for the cruelty she showed, Vixen, the heroine of this story. There is one more book before Briar's book and I can only hope she improves.
This needed more romance like her earlier books. Her witch series is one of her best and I recall the great romance of those books.

This is, frankly, poorly written. There's a plot that's terribly generic—evil vampire wants to take over the world, not-so evil vampires want him to leave things be. So they hire an assassin to whack the evil dude. Enter Reaper, a vampire with some odd form of PTSS which causes him to kill people, which, I suppose, is an asset of sorts, providing he has no friends. There's a problem with that, though: like every vampire in Shayne's world, Reaper is connected to his brother from another mother, Seth,a super nice guy who will also become a vampire once Shayne kills him off for being, well, a super nice guy. But that's okay, because Reaper will make hm a vampire, as Seth has the necessary genes. Apparently vampirism is not a disease, but a destiny.
In any case, after Seth has been properly made a bloodsucker, he tags along with Reaper, the crazy vampire, who spends much of the novel not telling Seth things, which is okay because everyone does that to everyone else anyway, even those who are in love with one another, also because of destiny. Which brings up the problem with this book: if no one talks to anyone else, and everyone's fate is decided from the moment they set foot on earth, what's the point? All one need do is simply bumble through life, act on his impulses, which is the only way to go, since he can be sure no one's telling him the full score, and everything will turn out right, if you're Seth, or wrong, if you're Reaper, and it's like that, 'cuz that's the way it is.
Yes, there are other characters in this book. But every one of them, nuances aside, behave in pretty much exactly the same manner. Change the PTSS to S&M and switch genders, and you suddenly have Briar instead of Reaper. And so on.
The subplot that underlies all the plots in this book, that folks, or vampires, in any case, act the way they do because of destiny, requiring no other motive, makes this novel a tedious read at best.

Kinda weird
This one was a bit weird. The story jumped from paragraph to paragraph without much of lead in. I really had to pay attention to the changes. I don’t particularly enjoy that type of story because I enjoy becoming part of the story, without the feeling that I must pay attention like a school textbook. I didn’t care for the ending either, it felt “empty”

Meeting Destiny
Maggie Shayne gives us a whole new group of characters in this book. Reaper, a professional assassin, is hired to kill a rogue vampire. He always works alone, but this time he acquires a group of misfit helpers. Shayne even gives us a new species, a shape shifter. A great read!

Normally these paranormal romances are right up my alley. The idea of the 'gang of misfits' sounds like such a great premise. I think where this book fell flat for me was that it tried to cram too much one book. If Topaz, Seth, and Reaper each had their own stand-alone stories and then this book was them all coming together to go after Gregor it would have been much more palatable for me.

I'm saddened that I loved Maggie's Wings in the Night 1, 2, 3 so much and was excited about this one but it didn't live up to my expectations. I also didn't realize that this was "Part" of the entire franchise but still, it's like someone else wrote it.

I really enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and you root for them to overcome Gregor and his helpers! Seth has a lot to learn about women and love!

It was fun but a lot of questions left unanswered and it never felt any of the main characters were truly in danger.

Realized when I was almost done that this is the 13th book. The story was interesting but not very well written. The ending was cheesy.

This book was perfect for what I was looking for. I enjoyed the take the author had on some of the classic vampire lore, though overall it did lean heavily on classic vampire tropes. It is perfect if you want a fast-paced paranormal romance, though the toxic nature of the relationships did put me off a bit. I also felt that there were several things left un-answered and not fully explored. However, the next two books in the series appear to follow the same storyline so I am hopeful some of those plot holes will be filled. It was cool reading about vampires other than the regular crew. I hope to learn more about older vampires and also how the special chosen has accomplished what she did. (trying to write that without spoilers was fun haha!) you'll enjoy this series! read it.

"Bacio di sangue" è uno spin-off della lunghissima serie "Wings in the Night" e devo dire che ho fatto un po' di fatica a finirlo XD La trama sembrava interessante e rincontrare nelle pagine iniziale la tosta Rhiannon mi ha fatto piacere...peccato che più andavo avanti è più note stonate subentravano XD Al di la della solita storia dei Prescelti trita e ritrita, in questo libro la trama si va a perdere in una cacofonia di personaggi (soprannominati dalla sottoscritta "la banda dei disperati" XD) bidimensionali, che non aggiungono nulla alla storia che si chiude in maniera altrettanto inconsistente XD Analizzando l'allegra combriccola troviamo: Seth, Prescelto nerd con la sindrome di Lancillotto, che viene trasformato ben presto in vampiro (dal suo "stalker/guardiano" XD) ma rimane un ragazzo simpatico e un po' sfigato, senza acquisire l'aurea di fascino dei non morti XD Reaper, forse il vero protagonista (credo almeno) è un vampiro killer con un passato da cecchino e una serie sindrome del sopravvissuto, con tanto di lavaggio del cervello che lo fa partire di testa con la "magica password" XD E' introverso, e ha il potenziale da bel tenebroso ma purtroppo ad un certo punto il suo cervello si sposta sotto la cintola e si fissa su una dei cattivi (che ovviamente, povera, è cattiva perché ha un triste passato, ma in realtà ha un cuore grande...si come no XD)e da lì in poi parte con il classico ruolo da martire XD Abbiamo poi Roxy, forse il personaggio migliore sebbene molto misterioso: è un po' la mamma del gruppo, una Prescelta umana 1000% e ancora viva contro ogni previsione. Ha un'anima Hippy e un passato che la lega a Reaper (avevo quasi sperato in una storia tra i due ma purtroppo niente ç_ç). Segue Vixen, né totalmente umana né totalmente vampiro...la sua natura è forse l'unico "colpo di scena" interessante ma il suo carattere lo è molto meno, perché questa ragazza dal cervello da bambina sembra caduta dall'albero del pero XD Per chiudere in bellezza abbiamo Topaz, vampira ricca e ingannata dal gigolò/cattivo-ma-non-troppo/vampiro Jack, di cui è innamorata perché hanno fatto del sesso fantastico (?). Il bello è che riesce ad avere pure il suo happy ending con Jack l'egocentrico che l'ha lasciata senza colpo ferire in pasto ai lupi XD A questa combriccola si aggiunge un'altra profuga di cui forse scopriremo di più nel prossimo libro (non che ne senta la necessita)...ah ovviamente il cattivo è sgattaiolato via a passo di danza (si vede che i drammi alla beautiful hanno distratto i nostri eroi XD) e io ho chiuso il libro con un sospiro di sollievo XD

The hero has always felt like he was destined for something more than being a fry cook at the local burger joint. The dreams of a woman haunt him and longs to meet his fate, what ever it may be. Then one, he and his friend are attacked and beaten. The hero, with his blood condition are on the brink of death when a man comes to him. He's the hero's guardian of sorts, a vampire who's psychic link to him has brought the vampire to him to save his life. The hero instantly takes the offer and he is turns. Once he's a vampire the link to the dream woman is strengthen until he can use it to hunt her down.
The heroine is a fox shifter whos been kidnapped and imprisoned by the rogue vampires and turned into a vampire herself. She's also dreamt of a man who's to be her destiny and knows that he's doing everything in his power to come rescue her. One night, they meet and the hero breaks her out. Together, along with their group of vampires and chosen alike take on the rogue vampires.
I thought this book started out well. I liked the hero. He's kind and selfless and eager to help anyone in everyway he can. When it comes to the heroine, he's shy and awkward but at the same time, he's protective and falls in love with her at first sight. But he was also ruthless. For a fry cook who's only battle experience up until that point was video games, he took the idea of killing people far to easily for my liking. He was so sweet and kind one moment but then he's planning to burn people alive. Regardless if they are the enemy, someone of his character shouldn't take to murder so comfortably. I liked the heroine as most times she's more animalistic the human. She thinks sex is mating and has trouble comprehending phrasing. She was very innocent and childlike-often running in the forest chasing mice. But I'd say over 50% of the story was not focused on these two characters. Instead I felt Reaper and Topaz gained most of the attention. This is largely in part tot he fact that while I liked the two main characters, I didn't feel they had enough charisma to be the focus of attention. Reaper has darkness and tension and a deeper character. Even Topaz-while being truly annoying and bitchy-sparked an emotion within me more that the hero and heroine did. They were just too plain and flat. Overall I wasn't engaged in any of the many story lines.

We get to meet a whole new batch of characters in this one - so if you're looking to jump in at the middle - this is the place to do it. Reaper is an assassin - a very good one. He's been hired to take out a dangerous rogue vampire. But this rogue is more that what we think at first - he's being a little too smart and seems to have a bigger plan.
Our main couple, Seth and Vixen, are two newly turned vampires. But Vixen is also something more. She's a really awesome character and has a whole bunch of surprises up her sleeve. I thought at first I wouldn't like this addition to the lore of Wings in the Night, but as I got to know more about her history and what she really was - I ended up really enjoying it.
Seth, well, he was a bit of a jerk a few times. But I still loved him because I knew he wasn't trying to be one, he just wasn't reacting well to the situations around him. Deep down he was such a sweetheart and you can't help but love him. There is quite a bit of excitement in this book and lots of pieces to a new puzzle are laid out. I think the next segment of this world's story is going to be very interesting.

The Demon's Kiss is the first book in a series by Maggie Shayne. It has your typical vampire but she brings a new twist to the old stories, which is invigorating.
It is about a vampire named Reaper, who is a loner, who ends up working with a crew that happened to put themselves together to work with him. Against his will, he allows them to stay with him as a team but he soon regrets it when he starts to have feelings for his group. Used to working alone, he learns to adapt to work along with the group in order for him to carry out the task he was asked to do. When he finds out that each person plays a part in his quest, he ends up needing them more than he wants to believe.
This book as an array of different characters and I like the way the author has put twists to the stories of vampires and shape shifters. This is a great book and should be a part of your vampire collections.

Used to working alone, he learns to adapt to work along with the group in order for him to carry out the task he was asked to do. When he finds out that each person plays a part in his quest, he ends up needing them more than he wants to believe.
This book as an array of different characters and I like the way the author has put twists to the stories of vampires and shape shifters. This is a great book and should be a part of your vampire collections.

Book 13 of the Wings of the Night series. You know, I keep giving this series a try because the books seem so interesting but time and time again they disappoint me. This one felt like it was book 3 of a series in that the characters acted as if they had history with each other but this was the first time they had met and had only been "friends" for less than a week. My brain kept screeching to a halt since there was no chemistry among the friends or the lovers. And this is an ensemble book, there is no main character, really, and it would actually work well as book 1 in a new series just about this motley crew of vampires and chosen ones. But I'm not going to bother reading any more of it. It's not bad, just not very good.

Basically the beginning of a new series; you won't really miss anything if you haven't read the first 12 'vampire' books by Maggie Shayne. This book's synopsis was a little confusing and once I got into the story I understood why. This isn't just a romance between Seth and Vixen. There are also romances between Jack & Topaz and Reaper & Briar. I'm assuming the author will build more on them as books are added to the series.
The reason for only 2 stars? Although the story is interesting and entertaining, it doesn't have a lot of depth. It felt very immature and juvenile to me. (Also, I'm not sure where the name 'Demon's Kiss' comes from - totally irrelevant.)
On the other hand, I freakin' love Vixen's character.

Book 13 in the Wings in the Night series.
While I like some books in this series more than others, this is my favorite vampire series of all time so every one is a favorite for me.
This was a great book and a fast read. The only reason this book got 3 stars was because many of the characters at the end of the book were "left hanging" (not because the book was not good!) I'm assuming because Ms. Shayne will follow up with them in her next book or two. The next on in the series "Lover's Bite" is due out in May '08! Can't wait!

This is a 3 1/2 because I felt like I still needed more or there was something missing. It entertained and I will read the next one, but I guess like I felt there wasn't enough to it at the end. I fell in love with Vixen. I am having trouble understanding Reaper's instant attraction to Briar and am not ready to see that yet. I don't know if the author wants us to like Topaz or not-I feel nothing for her, which I am pretty sure is not the intended reaction. I love Roxy. Seth was a huge disappointment, however, he proved to be multidimensional. I just don't know how he magically got over his issues.

This is the first in the series that takes a bit different turn, the focus isn't on one set of MC's that unite and fall in love in the same book, there is a lot more story involving multiple couples. While these vamps are related to the others in the first 12 books these are a different set of vamps and chosen that are seperate from the original characters. They are good books still but it was a little disappointing to read these in sequence back to back and have this difference. It's almost like starting a new series.

Tiene la virtualidad de dar un giro completamente nuevo a la saga. Incluye nuevos personajes y no tiene en cuenta al resto de personajes de libros anteriores más que como referencia además de agregar un nuevo elemento paranormal, q estuvo ausente en los anteriores libros, que es la capacidad de cambiar de forma que tiene Vixen.
El romance no tiene mucho de intenso, salvo por la pataleta de Seth cuando se entera que Vixen es una zorra - en el sentido literal. Por los demás, me interesa mucho más como continúa la historia de Reaper.

It was pretty good. It wasnt one of my favorites, but it kept me interested. I like a little more romance than this shared, but it worked. I am not sure if I would pick up the rest of the series or not, but I dont consider it a waste of time. I did enjoy the little bit of romance it shared in it. I liked how it was carried and portrayed, there just wasnt enough of it being an actual relationship. The romance took place more in the mind than out in the open. Over all, not bad.

Hmmm, let's see. It was a light, easy read. Too easy, like it was written by a 12 year old. The story had a lot of potential but it falls very short. It just didn't grab my attention. The character development was lacking. You couldn't really get into any one character...there were no main characters as they all had equal time in the book. However, it did give a different spin on vampires than any other paranormal book that I've read. Try again Ms. Shayne

Real review may come after I read the other Wings In t=The Nights books!
I didn't realize this was a part of the wings in the night series when I requested it on PBS but after reading it I HAVE to read the whole series! It was really good, much better than the reviews say. Maybe those people don't have very good imaginations because I do and I LOVED this book!!! After I get through the first 12 books I'll come back and review this one properly!

A truly entertaining story. I don't know that I would plonk this in the Paranormal Romance genre because even though it contains romance, it's more of an urban fantasy, concentrating on the main story and the romance is only a small part of it.
That said, I did enjoy this book and am happily reading the next in the series.
If you are looking for straight up PR, this wont satisfy you, but if you love a good story, read Ms Shayne and enjoy.

I enjoyed this book very much. This is the first vampire book I have read by this author. This is not your typcial vampire book.
You have both good and evil fighting eachother but there is a twist........both sides are made up of vampires!
There are some really funny witty comments made. I will be checking out more of this author's vampire books

enjoyable interesting read, not captivating but not boring or difficult to follow. A bit more complex than easy reading allows me. not a must read but a good one for anytime you want something new in paranormal relationships and suspense. For those who might reject it based on title, its not really relative to the storyline, only suggestive to add mystery.

don't waste your time reading this book. The author doesn't spend enough time shaping her characters and they come off fake. Granted it is a story about vampires and shape shifters but I've read tons of paranormal books and even though the premise' are unreal the characters still have meat to them.
