Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy starts off where Book 1 (Jack Templar: Monster Hunter) left off – with Jack heading off with his two pals T-Rex and Will, and the experienced monster hunter, Eva, to the Monster Hunter Academy to get answers to his many questions about his father’s disappearance and the history of his family, the Templars. Jeff Gunhus has created another wildly entertaining book in the Templar Chronicles book series for middle grade and young adult readers.

As with the first book, Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy assembles an interesting and unique collection of human characters including many of the same ones from the first book, but also introduces us to new characters such as Daniel, an instructor at the academy who holds a grudge against Jack for reasons which are eventually revealed; and, Master Aquinas, the aged and wise head of the Monster Academy who takes a special interest in Jack. The reader is also introduced to new Creach species including the evil fog creature they encounter in the sea and the bat-like shriekers which reign terror in the forest. I also liked the addition of the mysterious wolf with the white cross on his chest, Tiberon. He proved to be a very interesting character. I really enjoyed the mix of the old and the new in this respect.

Using a quirky and whimsical writing style, Jeff Gunhus spins an action-packed tale filled with adventure, danger, and thrills. That being said, I have to fess up… I read the first book aloud to my kids. We blasted through the first book because it was thoroughly engaging and my kids were completely captivated with the story. They were once again very excited to read the second book in the series so I began to read through it. Unfortunately, I finally had to give up at the halfway point in the book. My kids no longer wanted me to read it to them. Why, you ask? I’ll tell you.

The first book was 204 pages and the second is significantly longer with 328 pages. Those extra 120 pages are largely backstory to the Black Guard, the Templar family, and other historical pieces that are necessary to move forward with the overall story. So, while the book begins with much excitement and furor, once Jack gets to the Academy, it does drag on a bit and becomes a bit disjointed as tensions arise between Jack and Will, Jack and Daniel, and Jack and Eva. It seems that the focus shifts to these relationships and in explaining some of the history. There was a real lack of any substantive action in a large section of the book (i.e., maybe 80 to 100 pages) such as what we became accustomed to in the first book.

While it may not be an issue for older children (10+), I just have to point out that the second book is different from the first in this respect. And, in all fairness, the last third of the book is jammed-pack full of action and has a very similar feel to the first book. In fact, when I sat down to finish the book (at the midway point) by myself, I read through the entire remaining half in one sitting! It was really great and I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

My Bottom Line:

Jeff Gunhus has crafted another winner in the sequel to Jack Templar: Monster Hunter. Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy brings back our young hero, Jack Templar in another captivating story filled with plot twists and turns as further mysteries are unravelled and as Jack seeks further information that will help him find and rescue his father from the evil clutches of his nemesis, Ren Lucre. For those of you who loved the first book, you will likely find the second just as entertaining, although I would say that the plot is slightly more sophisticated in the sequel. I think children aged 10+ who love reading suspenseful stories filled with monsters, adventure, and danger will love this book.

Okay, I think I have found a new fantasy/paranormal author I like. Let's just start off with saying that if you like the "school/training" stories such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc then you have a good chance of enjoying this book. Not saying I love it as much as the world of Harry Potter or that it is necessarily as good(HP is really up there on the favorites list after all)but that it can be quite an enjoyable adventure for fellow fans.

This book picks up shortly after the first book (Jack Templar, Monster Hunter) leaves off. Jack is now on his was to the 'academy' to gain further knowledge into his family backround. The head of the school has the anseres he needs but she is determined that he needs to gain a firmer knowledge and ability of what it means to really be a monster hunter. So let the schooling begin!

We get a new character in this book-Daniel. Talk about a grudge! He and Jack are instantly at odds. And toss in the fact that the both like Eva and it seems hopeless. Frankly I did not like Daniel. He doesn't even give Jack a chance and even tries to set him up! Grrr.... Will is another character I was less than pleased with. He needs an ego check! He reminds me of Ron from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in this book. T-Rex, luckily, I come to like more and more. He isn't a warrior but he is strong of heart and when the going gets tough he is there for his friends.

While the first book was more paranormal with the vampires, werewolves, and zombies; this book has a more fantasy feel with the wolves, trolls, goblins, dragons and more. Especially the giant spider! The scene there gave me serious heebie-jeebies! I hate spiders! So well done there, Jeff Gunhus! I won't tell you why I creeped out but I will say it is more than it seems.

This book now has me quite excited for the series! Lots of adventure for young adults and adults alike. While violent at times, the book is actually quite clean. And while both Jack and Daniel like Eva there is no sense of a love triangle. Which is refreshing. Although I do not know if that rule will remain throughout the series. Time will tell. Regardless, Jeff Gunhus has done a very good job weaving stories together (Daniel's, Tiberon's, etc) into a grand adventure that is a delight to experience.

**I received an eCopy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.**

My Thoughts: This is the second book in the Jack Templar, Monster Hunter series, following Jack Templar, Monster Hunter, which I read and reviewed in February, 2013 (linked where formatting allowed). Book three will be called Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires and I can't wait!

Holy cow, this book was amazing, just amazing! I seriously became all choked up before the final fight scene when everyone was turning to everyone else and saying “The honor was all mine” I just... wow. I don't even know what else to say other than to fangirl all over the place, because this book was just phenomenally amazing. You have to read this book. Just … read it. There is nothing I can say that will prepare you for these books, other than you just reading them. Wow.

Disclosure: I picked up a copy of this book on a free promotion on Amazon. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis: After barely surviving the onslaught of monsters that tried to kill him the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack Templar leaves his hometown on a quest to rescue his father and discover the truth about his past. Joined by his friends Will and T-Rex, and led by Eva, the mysterious one-handed monster hunter, Jack sets out for the Monster Hunter Academy where he hopes to find answers to his questions. I want to thank Jeff Gunhus and I Am A Reader Not a Writer for sending me a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

Blurb from Goodreads:

I don't read much middle grade, even though I really enjoy it. So when I do pick one up, I want it to blow me out of the water. Seeing as I'm a big romantic fan, and middle grade doesn't have much of that, I have to have lots of action and adventure to keep my attention. I knew this one would do it. I was honored to have read the first book in this series a few months ago and I really enjoyed it. So I knew when this one was offered I needed to grab it and go. I am so glad I did!

Jack continues to be a great character. He shows a ton of growth and development in this book. He learns from his mistakes and moves on to overcome odds that you would never think he could. He is kind and caring, sometimes to a fault (as he gets himself into situations that you don't think he would be able to get out of otherwise). I love that he is very concerned for his friends' safety, he really doesn't seem to have a self-centered bone in his body. Unusual for any teenager, even at 14. And he is strong but not always confident and often questions whether or not he'll be able to pull through things.
His friends continue to grow and mature, as well. Will really takes to being at the academy and shines through. T-Rex finds his nitch and it's perfect for him. Eva is a great monster hunter and challenges Jack to become even better. And Jack's new "friend", Daniel, proves to be a challenge and then someone Jack can honesty rely on. I love that the secondary characters grow in this book. It's nice to see them follow along with the main character's development. I love all the new characters that were introduced, they really lend a great addition to the story.

As with the first book, this one is fast paced and fun. I didn't want to put it down once the action began! There are scary scenes and funny scenes, there are scenes that will move you. You learn so much about the Knights Templar and what they stand for. You learn a lot about Jack's history and why he must fight for what he believes in. Gunhus takes you on a ride that you will not soon forget. His story is reminiscent of Percy Jackson or Harry Potter for sure. Anyone who enjoyed those epic books will certainly take a liking to Jack and his crew.

The second book in this series was not a disappointment at all. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed this one even more than the first. I think because I already was invested in the characters and really wanted to see them come through in the end. It's full of fantasy and fun. And Gunhus's (or Jack's) warnings at the beginning of the book will just make you want to read it more! I'm really looking forward to the next installment in this series and have already told my son (who is 9 1/2) that I think he would really enjoy this story!

In this 2nd installment, Jack is strongly motivated to get the answers he needs in order to find and rescue his father. He and his friends embark on a journey to the Monster Hunter Academy in a remote location near the border of France and Italy where he believes his questions will be answered. However, once there, he finds it difficult to blend in because it appears that he is the trigger setting an old prophecy into action. With few exceptions, Jack is ostracized either because the other boys are in awe of him or because he is envied his “special” status. Jack immediately clashes with Daniel, an instructor. It does not help that Daniel is a rival for Eva’s affections, too. The rivalry between them continues to escalate until dire circumstances of an untenable situation force them to reassess their relationship. Impatient to get what he needs and move on with his personal quest, other events continue to stymie his efforts. Eventually, he even reluctantly agrees to attend classes and training in exchange for information from the elderly but spry Head Mistress, Aquinas.

I enjoyed reading this book even more than the first one. The pacing is still fast, but it is not as frantic as book one. Jack continues to learn, and he is steadily growing into the man he will eventually become – strong-willed, impatient, loyal, and honorable. His friends are also maturing. I was glad to see T-Rex find a niche at the Academy. It is satisfying to observe Will and T-Rex gain confidence and develop their own resourceful personalities. There is still plenty of humor along with the action. A couple of places I actually teared up during a rousing and emotional episode. I am looking forward to the next installment, that’s for sure!

The book begins as Jack is on his way to the Monster Hunter Academy. He doesn't know what he faces, but he knows this a step to freeing his father. He has his trustworthy friends by his side and ready to do whatever is needed to accomplish his goal.

Unfortunately for Jack, nothing comes easy. His reception at the academy is frosty and he is forced in the position of proving himself once again. In this adventure he faces new monsters and challenges.

I find it fun that the beginning of the book is another warning about entering the world of monsters. Once you know about them, there is no turning back and you are reading at your own risk. It is such a clever way to pull kids into the story.

I enjoy reading about Jack and his friends. They are such a great group of kids. The book flies at a fast pace and is full of action and adventure. There isn't time to loose interest or get bored.

There is violence, after all, he is a monster hunter. That would be the only caution I would have for readers. This is a fun book to read.

The book that I read was Jack Templar Monster Hunter book #2 by Jeff Gunhus. Over all I really liked this book and I’m not just saying this because the authors my dad but the book was really good. I like the constant challenges and deals that jack had to make to keep his friends safe. Also there was constant action and almost never a full stop in suspense and action so, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Also what I liked is that Jeff Gunhus added some history of the templar knights in the book. For example he added that the knights didn’t believe congratulate the wealthy but help the poor. But if I tell you why then it would give the book away.

This was a nice continuation of the first novel in this series. I really like the four main characters. The book continues the story of Jack Templar as he tells it so you get just his perspective but it works. The author has a nice, easy-going writing style that will appeal to middle graders with lots of dialog and action. Reading this as an adult, I do wish we had additional perspectives and more background on this world but the amount given appears to be the right amount for the target audience. This novel moved the plot forward quite a bit at a rapid pace and should hold any middle grader's interest. I am intrigued as the little band of Jack Templar's friends get ready for quest that will start in the next book so I do plan to pick it up. Highly recommend for the middle grade audience.

Find the full review (and excerpt) on my blog - Best Kids' Reads.

I read both Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Academy for this review, so these are my thoughts on both books. I have to confess that my kids haven't read these yet (they just haven't had time recently because they are in the middle of other series), but I have no doubt in my mind that my 10-year-old son will LOVE these books and I'm pretty sure my 9-year-old daughter will enjoy them as well.

What I loved:
The fun and witty intros.
Both books start out with a really amusing warning about how monsters are real and cautioning you that reading the book will draw monsters to you so that you will never be safe again. (Warning - if you have kids who are easily scared, this might actually get to them!). I thought it was great fun and a fantastic way to draw kids into the story, making them feel like they could actually be a part of it.

The action.
These books are full of monster fighting action, sure to please your average middle grade boy. The fighting sometimes gets intense. (Although it's not gory or age inappropriate, if you have a sensitive child, these scenes could be bothersome). The book lives up to its name - Jack is a monster hunter and he ends up battling LOTS of monsters.

The high stakes.
Unlike in some books for middle graders, everyone is not safe. In fact, characters die. The heightened stakes make those action scenes that I just mentioned that much more intense because you're never quite sure if everyone is going to make it.

The characters.
Jack is a character that lots of boys can connect to - an average boy put into extraordinary circumstances. Even though he suddenly gains immense strength, he doesn't instantly turn into a fearless hero. Instead he sometimes lets others down and he struggles with whether or not he can handle the pressure. Meanwhile, his friend Will is oozing confidence and courage, sometimes making Jack feel that he can't possibly be the hero everyone is searching for. Their other friend, T-Rex is a fun character who suffers from anxiety and low self-esteem (partly from being bullied). I especially loved him in the second book, when he truly discovered his importance and owned it!

What I didn't like:
Its similarities to that "other" series.
I have to confess that I was a bit afraid that this series would be a Lightning Thief copycat, just using monsters instead of mythological creatures. I was especially worried when I saw that book two took place at a monster fighting academy (hmmm... Camp Halfblood anyone?). However, I will say that, in the end, while some comparisons could certainly be made, I felt that the Jack Templar books stood on their own. These books will definitely appeal to fans of Riordan, but they aren't a rehash of his books. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned!

Very few adult influences.
Besides Jack's aunt (who is present only in the first book) and the leader of the Monster Academy (in the second book), there are no other adults in these books (unless you count the enemies!). Will's parents are abusive (though this is not directly seen in the books, it is referred to) and T-Rex's grandma is senile. While I understand how these things helped propel the story, I kind of wished that there had been one or two more positive examples of adults in the kids' lives.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure and fantasy. Riordan fans will definitely love this series! Honestly, I felt like I had to be very nitpicky to even come up with negatives about this book - it's exactly what a middle grade fantasy should be. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment! 5/5 Stars.

This picks up where we left off in the first book. Jack survived a contract on his life by the monsters of the world. He and his friends head to the Monster Hunter Academy. Jack plans to stay long enough to get some answers. His friends, Will and T-Rex, find positions there to their liking. But trouble finds Jack there too.

Derivative. Jack is chosen one. Must take a challenge (think Goblet of Fire) that he didn't enter, but as the chosen one, he will accept. Mentor is older one who wants to keep him alive for the big challenge.

"There is blood and gore and death and, like it or not, some kissing. But there is also an adventure unlike anything you have ever seen before. So turn the page if you dare. The adventure starts now. Jack Templar "

If at the first volume you did not know what to expect and you were surprised by the story‘s pace and events, when you start the second volume you’ll have great expectations. Expectations will be fulfilled. Seeking information necessary to save his father, Jack will have to face a lot. Every heroes' step brings new challenges and dangers.

Each known or newly introduced character has something to offer and something to be admired for. The reader will have something to learn from each of them. Even those "bully" are not in the traditional sense, and they will prove reasons and special qualities. Each character evolves and assumes their given or chosen role. Sometimes help comes from where you least expect it and it turns out that "monsters" (or only sometimes) are not what they seem to be.

“The bravado is gone. That’s a hopeful sign. I just hope the courage remains.”

In brief, there are many adventures, many dangers that come like iron chains. But this is not one heavy chain, but very tortuous one that will keep readers attentive and well caught in action. Sometimes a bit like Lord of the Rings, sometimes with a touch of Indiana Jones and a dash of James Bond, Jack maintains its originality. Given the way the author brought these scenes similarities (some are very emotional) I take them as a tribute.

"I decided that I would draw the line when I started repeating, “ My Precious…”

And what would have been Jack without those new feelings which prod him? Is it just infatuation or love? That first sweet and slightly bitter love especially when you do not know if it's mutual, or when competition appears on the horizon. Like any boy (= future man) that can lead to mistakes and Jack's luck is that his decisions were maintained only in the level of... you’ll see.

As in the first volume, the humor is also present and softens the tension.

“Maybe whatever monsters were in there have all died off,” T-Rex suggested. “Maybe you’ll just walk right in, grab the ring, and walk right back out.” I liked the sound of that.
“Oh, I doubt that,” Xavier said. “That cave goes on for miles and miles. No one really knows how far. More likely it’s overrun with bizarre species we haven’t seen for decades. It really should be quite fascinating. Scientifically speaking.”

Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy brings promise of more struggles and difficult trials in volume to come that I look forward for. I look forward to the next volumes also because the author offered us some (in a stingy way) information about Ren Lucre's past on which I began to turn in every way and seek for the connections with what we already know. The possibilities are endless and very exciting.

And if you still thought that monsters dwell just in the stories, then you will be convinced how naive you are! Remember that you were warned!

Jack Templar and the Monster Academy is the second book in The Templar Chronicles by Jeff Gunhus. Like it's predecessor, Jack Templar the Monster Hunter, it's fast-paced, adventurous and a thrilling journey for it's readers.

Jack Templar and the Monster Academy starts off soon after Jack Templar the Monster Hunter ends. Jack and the gang are travelling, there's lots of excitement, anticipation and training aboard the ship that will take them closer to their ultimate destination, the Monster Academy. A few pages into the book the gang faces a monster attack aboard the ship that their on, the excitement and action doesn't stop from there on. There was wolf, goblins and screechers attacks, just to name a few. If that was not bad enough for young Jack, he soon finds himself with the burden and the massive responsibility of not only saving his Father, the Academy but the entire human race. He must find the Jerusalem Stones in order to put a stop to the war that the Creech Lord, Ren Lucre, is waging against humans.

The characters were fabulous as usual. Jack and his gang, Eva, Will and T-Rex was still the main focus of the story but we also had an antagonist, Daniel, an Academy Instructor who has feelings for Eva come into the story. Daniel in the beginning was unlikeable, mean and a general bully with a strong dislike for our hero. However, mid way through the story Daniel tells his touching story which nearly brought me to tears and the Readers soon understand why he is the way he is. He quickly redeems himself after that, and I was able to forget and forgive his indiscretions at the start and soon enough, Daniel not only wins the heart of the readers but also that of the "gang".

Jack Templar and the Monster Academy is a fabulous sequel to Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter. Its fast-paced and just as exciting as it's predecessor, probably even more so. The entire story was an edge of your seat, thrilling roller coaster ride. Upon seeing that GWR is hosting a tour for book 2 in The Templar Chronicles I just HAD to participate as I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. It's not just for the Middle-Grade, its for anyone that enjoys an adventure, a simply written book but lots of depth within the story. I really love the characters, and this is really half my love for this series. Looking forward to reading the next book in this well-written series by Jeff Gunhus, Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires.

5 STARS

I reread Jack Templar: Monster Hunter last night then started Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy today. I really like both books. They are filled with adventure, heroes who are regular kids that overcome their fears to help their friends. That just because some say this person is bad and all should be killed is not always the best policy. The book has lots of different monsters that are trying to kill Jack and friends. Lots of battles are fought. Lots of action , drama and being friends. It is a clean read. it can be a stand alone book but I would read 1 before 2.

Jack, T-rex, Will and Eva are on their way to the Monster Hunter Academy to be trained to fight monster hunters. Eva keeps telling them that it is really dangerous to go there. Eva is a trainer at the last Academy. She starts training Jack as they travel on a boat heading toward the Alps.

Jack Templar wants answers. Is his father still alive and being held prisoner? What are the Jerusalem Stones? What did his mom do that she wants Jack to forgive her for.? Did he kill Ren Lucre or just wounded him. Why do people think that he is special? His Aunt raised him after his parents died. But she was really a demon wolf and raised him so he could be turned over to Ren Lucre when he turned 14. But she fell in love with him and gave her life to protect him.

Will is Jack's friend. He is short but feisty. His parents beat him and wont miss him. To fight monsters is his chance to belong and make a difference. Jack's Aunt was more of a mother figure for him too.

T-rex is a scared friend of Jack & Will. His grandmother raised him and now they were going to put her in a home and he will go in foster system. He does not want to be a fighter, but would not mind working in the kitchen to help.

Daniel is one of the trainers. He likes Eva but takes a dislike right off the bat to Jack. He is willing to have Will be in his group. He hates the wolves and wants to destroy them especially the big one with white marking on his chest.

This is a engaging series of books I will plan to read the next one when it comes out too.

*spoiler alert*
The second book in the Jack Templar series is even better than the first one! It's a pretty fast read and it's impossible to be bored for a second. Since it's the second book there is no need for all that beginning exposition and warnings, so the action never stops. Some parts remind me of Harry Potter - especially the Aquamorph part...sounds a lot like a boggart. It's a fantasy story set at the Monster Hunter Academy/Hogwarts, so I guess you can draw parallels everywhere. We've got the Hunger Games/Twilight/Matched/every-book-ever-created love triangle, but it's a little different: Daniel's in it, and he's a Snape. So he seems really evil until you hear his story, then you can't help but like him.

My favorite part was the trial of the cave. I really liked the choice between the gold ring and the stone ring, it was a perfect addition to the chapter. My second favorite was Tiberon. I loved that Jack saved him and defended him (he did have this special talent where he could show people memories, through his eyes, by touching them with his paw/hand...I'm really not a Twilight fan but this screams Renesmee. But if I had a superpower it would be that, so I guess I'm okay with more than one book using it). Even though I know it's what he wanted, I was sad when he was "released" at the end. I wish he could have remained a character. Book 3 is set up to be great! I'm looking forward to Jack meeting his father...because he has to, after all the years he's waited and looked up to him... ;)

If I had one complaint it would be that Jack gets through an awful lot without a scratch. I mean, he battles an Aquamorph, Tiberon, a rock troll, a gigantic spider, and a couple of dragons and doesn't even lose a limb. Even Eva lost a hand - Jack? He's a superhero. Must be that Templar blood.

Fantastic adventure story, especially for middle schoolers. Maybe I can even get my sister to read it :) 4.5 stars!

Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy (Book 2) by Jeff Gunhus
Note: This is the second book in the series.
Jack Templar is a monster hunter from a long line of monster hunters. Too bad he didn’t find out until the day before his fourteenth birthday, when all the monsters on the planet would be hunting him for their dinner. His job for the moment is to stay alive long enough to learn how to kill them.
Along to learn with him are his best friends T-Rex (nose-picker extraordinaire), Will (who wants to be a monster hunter himself). And Eva, instructor at the monster hunter academy who has brought them safely across the ocean to one of the last deeply hidden Monster Hunter Academies in the world. There, she has promised Jack that Master Aquinas will answer the questions he has about his past and about his father, who is being held hostage by an evil vampire.
Of course, once there, Jack’s hope of getting his questions answered are immediately dashed. He’s busy trying to handle one of the world’s worst bullies, Daniel, who is also an instructor at the Academy. Daniel also happens to have a “thing” for Eva.
With wolves at the Academy gates, and a gnawing desperation to get to his father, Jack feels that time is running out…
Jeff Gunhus originally started this series to compel his son to start reading, and it shows. This story is gripping on a number of levels. The very first sentence is designed to draw the reader’s interest. Even if the reader missed the first book in the series, it doesn’t really matter, the book has a recap of the first text and the action is such that there is little time for reflection of past events.
The characters leap off the page and grab the reader and draw him or her into the always dangerous, sometimes deadly adventures. This is a series that demands to be read.

Jack and his friends, Will and T-Rex, are headed to the Monster Hunter Academy with Eva. Jack was thrown into a confusing situation in Book 1 and that was all about survival and now he's ready to hear some answers! Getting to the Academy won't be easy and, once he arrives, not everyone is happy to see him or ready to embrace him as the One. Jack doesn't look like anyone special and he doesn't feel it, either, so he will need to be thoroughly tested to see if he can handle the pressure. Jack, Will and T-Rex each have their own agenda once they reach the Academy and their friendships are tested. Will Jack get the answers he needs? Will he survive the challenges he faces? Will he be able to keep his friendships intact?

Another great book! Again, it starts with a warning about monsters and that if you read this book, you become fair game for monsters. He also warns about blood, gore, death and kissing (although the kissing is very minimal). That's a pretty good warning. If your children are queasy, don't have them read this yet. I felt that Book 1 was pretty action packed but this felt nonstop. Especially towards the end. I thought poor Jack would get a rest and immediately he would be on to fight the next battle. Hopefully he'll have a little time to recover for Book 3.

I felt that the plot moved along well and enjoyed learning some answers along with Jack. There's still enough we don't know which will make reading the next book just as much fun as reading this one was! We learn some information about their mission at the end which doesn't make it appear that this series will be ending anytime soon, so hopefully Mr. Gunhus will keep these coming!!

Jack Templar has just survived his first run-in with the evil Lord of the Creach. He's now on his way to the Monster Academy, a place where he hopes to find answers about his father and his future. Being the prophesied person everyone expects to save the world isn't easy after all. However, he finds that the Monster Academy isn't quite as welcoming as he had hoped it would be. On top of that, Jack is faced with a lack of answers about what he's supposed to be doing. He will soon be facing perils he never even imagined. Hopefully, he'll be able to survive.

I didn't read the first book in this series, but the book the a fabulous job of catching me up in a way that still moved the story along. I find that can be a difficult thing for books to do, so I enjoyed that. Also, the book wastes no time getting into the action. There is a lot happening in this book, but it never managed to be too much for me as a reader. I found the pacing to be great in that respect. This book also has a bit of a wicked sense of humor, and that helps to keep the book from getting to bogged down in all the seriousness of the situation.

This is a book that will clearly appeal to boys. It just seems like a natural fit. However, it also has some very strong female characters as well, so I think that girls will be able to find it equally enjoyable. I know I did. It had some very creative creatures too. I found this book to be something that will appeal to young and older readers of both genders fairly equally. That's difficult to do. This book will draw you in and keep you reading until the last second. Oh, and you'll definitely be ready for the sequel.

Jack Templar: Monster Academy
By: Jeff Gunhus

The second book in Jeff Gunhus’s Jack Templar series picks up right where the first book left off. Jack and his friends are on a sea voyage to the Monster Hunter’s Academy. The action and intrigue from the first book aren’t any less in this book as from the opening pages the teens are attacked by monsters as they begin their journey to the school where Jack hopes to learn about his past and plan his future.
After barely surviving the attacks on the ship and in the forest surrounding the academy they arrive at their destination and lay the groundwork for future challenges.
Along with dealing with his new destiny, Jack is also facing the tumultuous waters of being a teen, like dealing with jealousy and bullies.
When his enemy and rival for a girl challenges him, in spite of his inexperience he has no choice but to accept the challenge. Once outside the academy gates they are set upon by monsters and Jack’s rival is seriously injured and will die if Jack can’t figure out a way to save him.
If Gunhus hasn’t delivered enough action and monsters, after Jack successfully rescues Daniel, he is forced to make a choice to stay in the relative safety of the academy or travel into a cave that no one has come out of alive in many years.
Once again Mr. Gunhus leads the readers on a nail-biting, hair-raising adventure as we follow Jack Templar on his quests. Readers will be left breathless as they navigate Jack’s new life. This reader can’t wait for the third book in the series to see where and what Jack and his band of friends will do next.

This is the second book in the Templar Chronicles, in which we watch Jack Templar grow into a teen and a monster hunter all at the same time. In the first book, he discovers and deals with the new monster hunter identity. In this book, he travels to the academy, along with his friends, Will and T-Rex. The trio of make-shift orphans have to try to find their place at their new schooling location, and Jack tries to cope with his romantic feelings for Eva, his battle buddy turned instructor.

We find that Jack is much more compassionate than his other hunter companions when he saves the life of a well-hated wolf, thought to be a werewolf. He follows his intuition and goes out of his way to protect the wolf, despite the overwhelming negativity towards wolves at the academy.

I liked the first book. But I really liked this book. The new characters at the academy are a great addition to the basic group from book one. Monster Academy set a more serious tone as Jack comes to realize that although he managed to live through his first run-in with the Big Bad Vampire Lord, he has much more to learn.

I am already looking forward to reading the next book in the chronicles, whenever that happens to come out. What will happen to Jack and his buddies next? I love that the author began this series as an attempt to get his son excited about reading. How awesome to have your dad write books just for you!

I have to say I absolutely LOVE this series by Jeff Gunhus! Yes I am 45, but it still kept my attention and kept me turning the pages quickly. I had so much fun reading this book. It all started in book one with the warning, telling me NOT to keep reading. I thought that was such a great way to introduce the reader to the story. Then the pure number of monsters that kept coming out at Jack and the adventures and battles were enough to keep me flipping the pages.

Book 2 starts out right where book 1 left off. I won't say how, but suffice it to say it was again with a warning to NOT read any farther if you're not a monster hunter. I loved this book. I thought the action scenes were fabulous and entertaining. I felt the plot moved along at a very rapid pace and most of all I enjoyed Jack and the bond he has with his friends.

This is a wonderful series for children to read. It will keep them actively involved especially with the warnings to stop reading. I gave this book to my 9 year old who had no trouble what-so-ever reading and understanding it. So that says the ages of 10 to 14 are flexible I think anyone who loves an action packed children's book should read this one. You won't be disappointed!

Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Jack Templar the first time around was very exciting and creative except for one thing--the warnings ala Percy Jackson. This time the only warning came at the beginning, and after that, non-stop action, more creativity, great characterization, danger and monsters, and did I say non-stop action? With the skilful descriptions, I visualized almost every scene like a movie. Let's just say if this book can't hold a reluctant reader's attention, not even Percy Jackson can.

What's not to love? At first I thought Jack's rival was too predictable. But then Gunhus used that expectation in a very unexpected way, giving us a peek into his motivations that turned the rivalry into an opportunity for understanding and maybe companionship. All through the book, I enjoyed the way Jack learned to seek the good in others, even monsters. I'm not saying whether it always worked. That's for you to find out. So to answer my question, there's nothing you won't love once you read how it turns out. Well, except for a few mistakes and the ending. I wanted more.

I was provided a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. If you check my other reviews, you'll see very few this high. It's hard for a middle grade book to appeal to adults. Gunhus did it.

This book reminded me of a class I am taking in college right now--
-in which the Professor LOVES to exclaim over and over...

"Lets get ready to RRRRRUUUUUMMMMBBBBBLLLLEEEEE!!!!!!!"

Exciting, action packed, detail oriented, and
movie-detail captured writing are just
a few of the words I would use
to describe...

We start in book 2, and we venture into things Jack has been through,
look at what he is learning ahead, and sets some new adventures!

Jack has a plot to figure out, and he sets out
to get answers!

I won't be telling you if those answers are found-
but I will tell you this....
the book leaves you with chills!

Children and adult friendly, this book should be a must read on everyone's list!

I have boys-so I can tell you, this will be a series they continue to follow.

Thank you to Jeff Gunhus for his amazing writing ability,
talent for drawing in the reader, and tact in making things
that could be risqué in todays society
child friendly reading!

Five stars for the content, five stars for the wording,
and 5 stars for the amazing continued story-line.

Fabulous read!

I am pleased to say that this second book in the series did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series (even though I do not always like fantasy books), and I will definitely look forward to the next in the series! This is the perfect young adult fantasy novel, and my daughter (who is almost 10) is also looking forward to reading this. I spent some time trying to figure out why I like this fantasy series even though it deals with vampires, werewolves, and the zombies. All I can say is that the book is clean, funny, and well-written. For whatever reason, Jeff Gunhus can make me believe the fantasy portions of the book and even embrace them. I guess it must be a gift he has.

I recommend this book highly to lovers of young adult fiction, fantasy fiction, and even those who just want to read something different. I would recommend reading the first book in the series first because you might find yourself getting lost without reading the first book.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Book two in this series, Monster Hunter Academy, picks up right where the action in the first book lets off, taking Jack Templar to the academy where the monster hunters train. Before they even hit the academy though, new monsters strike, setting up another book full of action and excitement. When they reach the academy, each person must adjust in their own way to the levels of the academy (instructor, hunters, and ratlings)

Jack must find a way to stay true to himself and find the answers he seeks. Along the way new friends, new threats and new discoveries aide the journey.

The fourth wall breaking that pulled away from the story was gone... And instead I found myself fully engaged and engulfed in this adventure and characters. Jack Templar is a real boy, and you route for him like you know him. And now that the foundation and direction for the series has been defined, I am excited to follow him on the rest of his journeys, knowing the path ahead us treacherous, exciting, and sure to be full of wit and fun! Again, this book is full of darker themes and violence and should be considered for younger middle grade or sensitive kids.

I’ve managed to deal with the Creach that find me from time to time after reading the first Jack Templar book – long enough to bring you this review of the second, anyway.

Jack is the son of Monster Hunters, who has just survived past his fourteenth birthday after being attacked by zombies, werewolves and worse. After surviving his encounter with the Creach Lord Ren Lucre, Jack and his friends go with Eva and travel to France to the Monster Hunter Academy. What they find there is not the warm welcome Jack had hoped for.

Monster Hunter Academy is a well-written and enjoyable story, but it lacked a bit of the originality that made the first Jack Templar book stand out for me. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next instalment though – the series promises to be an interesting journey after the recent events at the Academy!

Jeff Gunhus certainly has the makings of a hit with the Templar Chronicles. The second volume, Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy, is the second installment (following Jack Templar, Monster Hunter) and has every bit (and more) of the excitement and drama of the first novel.

Designed for the reluctant reader in the nine to twelve-year-old range, the story of Jack Templar is full of action that keeps the pages turning. The narrative descriptions are rich and full for the circumstances Jack and his friends find themselves in, and the concise action dialog moves the story quickly. The characters are dimensional, have age-appropriate dialog and are connected. Of note in this second book there is a telepathic dialog between Jack and the wolf, Tiberon, that is every bit as compelling as the scenes from the more adult Game of Thrones novels.

As with the first round, Gunhus’ second novel, Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy, ends with a cliff hanger that leaves great anticipation hanging in the balance. 5 stars!

So you think your are having a bad day? Well, it may not be as bad as you think. Did your Aunt turn out to be really a monster in disguise? Did you realize that now that you are fourteen you are now being hunted by monsters all around you, and whether you want to or not you must fight back? In the first book, things seemed pretty bad for Jack Templar, but in the second book, Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter, things get even more intense. He now is on his way to The Monster Hunter Academy and challenges face him even on his journey there as a warning that there is more to come. Jack Templar wants answers and he is willing to going to go out of his way to find them whether they put him in danger or not, and as he looks for answers he discovers what he is really fighting for.
A great fast, moving plot will be sure to keep kids reading.

I received a complimentary book in exchange for my review, but my opinions are entirely my own.

Written for middle school aged students, this book is action-packed from the beginning and will hold the attention of young readers. Not only that, as an adult reader, it was hard to put down, so parents will enjoy it as an easy read. Continuing from Book One, the plot follows Jack Templar, the orphaned teenaged main character, and takes on twists and turns. At a tender age, Jack learns his fate the day before his fourteenth birthday - that his ancestors were monster hunters and he has until he is fourteen to be safe from attack. Jack takes on monsters and zombies and although he finds out the people he once knew are part of the pack, he discovers friendships that help him along the way. Be prepared for monster fights, suspense and plenty of thrilling action.
Well-written and complete with adventure, the plot moves quickly and seamlessly. This is an excellent read to delve into a world of the unknown.
