The entire Kincaid family is heading to San Diego for a Christmas reunion where all of the siblings will be together for the first time as adults. At his mother’s request, Patrick takes a detour through San Francisco to check on Gabrielle (Elle) Santana, a close family friend whose mother has been desperately trying to reach her for days. He unwittingly finds himself in the middle of a very dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Lucy & boyfriend Sean Rogan, along with her brother Dillon & girlfriend Kate Donovan, find themselves grounded in a Denver hotel because of bad weather. Unfortunately, they get called into action as a dead body is found and the death isn’t due to natural causes.

Not enough drama? Back in San Diego, Pat Kincaid, the family patriarch, has a health emergency that lands him in the ER. While visiting him, Carina gets involved in the middle of a hostage situation that quickly spirals out of control.

These are three separate stories that dovetail nicely once everyone reaches San Diego. Patrick’s dilemma poses the most threats and danger because Elle makes rash decisions that exacerbate the issues. Their developing relationship seems illogical on the surface but it actually works well for both of them. I enjoyed seeing Lucy & Sean team up with Dillon & Kate to apply the best of their skills in the hotel investigation. They were like a well oiled machine working in tandem. When they arrived in San Diego, Lucy is drawn into Carina’s situation, giving us a view of the new FBI agent who’s finally managed her panic attacks.

The structure of the book is a clever concept executed flawlessly. The transitions were seamless and the convergence in San Diego built to an exciting climax. There was also drama from within the family as Lucy’s oldest sister hasn’t spoken to her since her son Justin’s kidnapping and death when Lucy was seven years old. I liked all of the stories equally with some elements from each being favorites. It wasn’t confusing in the least and it was a treat to see so many Kincaids in action in one story.

I love the Kincaid family and this book is three stories related to the Kincaid's gathering for Christmas and is a chance to catch up with them. I happen to really like well written short stories and these are definitely well written. Short and fast paced with the action non-stop. While on the way to San Diego for Christmas the Kincaid kids just can't stop finding dead bodies.

Part I - Patrick and Elle: I am so happy that we get a story about Patrick, the last unattached Kincaid. Patrick is sent on a mission by his mother to check on the daughter of a friend of Mrs. Kincaid, who Patrick knows, but hadn't seen since high school. Elle Santana hasn't been returning phone calls and her mother is worried. What he finds is Elle in serious trouble and a missing girl trying to bring down some serious baddies. Elle and Patrick are opposites and don't trust each other. Patrick has been in emotional limbo since coming out of his coma and Elle makes him feel emotions he thought were dead. Elle, an attorney working pro bono cases, has way to many TSTL moments and a serious deficiency when it comes on knowing who to trust.

Part II - Sean and Lucy; Dillon and Kate: This foursome is trapped in Denver by a blizzard and the bodies just keep dropping in an upscale boutique hotel. Newly minted FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid and veteran Agent Kate Donovan are on the case since the Denver police are not able to respond. Sean and Lucy can't seem to go any where without a dead body or two popping up.

Part III - Nick and Carina; Sean and Lucy: In San Diego Colonel Kincaid has had a heart attack and is in the hospital. While on a walk to clear her head, Carina, the Kincaid kid who stayed, notices a man acting strangely, follows him and ends up as a hostage. The man's sister died and he isn't satisfied with the answers to his questions and now only Lucy and Sean can give him answers and save the hostages.

This is a very good read. It is the 7th Lucy and Sean book but is a little different from the others. It features 3 short stories involving Lucy's siblings as well as Lucy and Sean. It concludes with all of the siblings making it home for Christmas and a new developing relationship. I would highly recommend this series which should be read in order.

Included in this book is a novella Reckless which is very good as well.

This book contains three novellas which tie together nicely in the end. The whole Kincaid clan is making their way home to San Diego for the Christmas holiday. Patrick Kincaid's mother asks him to stop in San Francisco on his way home and check on their neighbor's daughter, Gabrielle (Elle) Santana. It doesn't take long for Patrick to find Elle and get embroiled in a mess that includes human trafficking and people shooting at them.

Lucy Kincaid and Sean Rogan are stuck in a Denver Hotel along with Dillon and Kate when a body is discovered. Since the roads are closed due to a blizzard, Lucy and Kate decide to start an investigation until the police arrive.

In San Diego, the Kincaid family patriarch, Pat Kincaid, suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital. When Carina Kincaid stops in to check on her father, she finds herself taken hostage by a gunman along with three nurses.

I found each of these stories to be entertaining and fast moving. The only part of the book that I did not care for was the character of Elle who I found jumped from one dumb decision to the next. She needed to use her brain. I enjoyed seeing so many characters from Allison Brennan’s previous books. My rating: 4 Stars.

The best of the series so far. Cold Snap was a pleasure to read. Three mysteries in one novel and every Kincaid and associate that Brennan has mentioned in the series gets not just a cameo appearance but a leading role to showcase their talents.

A really fun Christmas holiday read. Dead bodies and all.

This is well written but it's actually like 4 novellas or short stories instead of one book. 3 of the stories are part of Cold Snap and the 4th is a short story titled Reckless. I enjoyed the stories, felt they were well written and edited and for the most part they were creative and yet...it was like eating a 4 course meal and then still feeling hungry. I think my problem may have been that I was looking for a full length novel like the prior stories I have read of Ms. Brennan's.

The characters that Ms. Brennan has developed are interesting and appealing (for the most part). It's a really good group of characters and I have liked some of the previous novels starring them. I do like finding out how favorite characters are getting along and that is what this is. A massive reunion of Lucy Kindcaid characters where they get into trouble and find murdered victims.

If it's been awhile since you read the prior novels, then this may feel a little bit like being dropped in the middle of a novel where you kind of know what's going on, but then again, are you remembering the characters correctly.

In the first short story, you have Patrick and Elle getting mixed up in drugs and human trafficking as Elle tries to save a teenager and convict a bad guy. I liked Patrick, but I had major problems with Elle. I liked that she was spirited and really wanted to help troubled teenagers. What I had a problem with is how she treated Patrick. She's supposed to be attracted to him and he was the major crush of her teenage years and yet she doesn't treat him or his ideas with any level of respect. She's hot headed, careless, stubborn to the point that she starts to fall in the TSTL category. When you add TSTL with treating Patrick like he's incompetent and has stupid ideas and she is not a heroine that I can stand behind. And based on how she treated him, I can't see what he sees in her. The story line was good but was ruined for me by Elle's character.

The second short story featured Kate/Dillon and Lucy/Sean. It was a fairly good story and I did enjoy it. The third story featured Carina/Nick and Lucy/Sean. It too was fairly good. Reckless, the fourth story featured Lucy/Sean.

Each of the 4 stories basically takes place in a time frame of 24 to 48 hours and all the plots feel a little rushed. It's amazing how quickly this family can wrap up crime and murder.

Three stories in one. Patrick is in San Francisco trying to help the daughter of a family friend while Lucy and Sean are snowbound at a hotel in Denver surrounded by dead bodies. All the stories are intriguing and fast paced.
Patrick’s story was a hard one for me because it had to do with missing teens and human trafficking. Some of the scene are brutal and heart wrenching. Ella Santana is a strong female character who gives Patrick a run for his money and possibly wins his heart. I liked Ella and her determination to save all teens that are on the streets. Jack makes an appearance in this story and it made me smile. I look forward to watching how the relationship between her and Patrick grows.
Lucy, Sean, Dillon and Kate are all stuck in Denver due to a snow storm that has grounded all flights. One dead body turns into 3 and now the race is on to catch the killer before the storm lets up and the killer gets away. I really liked how well Lucy and Kate work together. The case is solved rather quickly and the story itself was good, but it didn’t catch my attention like the others. I did like how Lucy’s and Patrick’s stories run simultaneously.
The final story takes place at the hospital where everyone has gathered. Lucy’s father, Colonel Kincaid, has had a heart attack and Lucy, Patrick and everyone else rush to the hospital as soon as they land. What surprises them all is that there has been an incident and Carina has been taken hostage by a man with a gun who is demanding the truth about his sister’s death. I enjoyed this story the most, maybe because I work in the medical field. Lucy shows that she is going to be an excellent FBI agent. She is able to keep the gunman calm and knows what will set him off.
This book gave me the feeling that things are changing for the Kincaid family. In this case, change is good.

As an Allison Brennan fan, all you need to tell me is "it's a Kincaid novel" and I am there. But this novel has some twists and turns that really intrigued me - in fact I can't recall ever reading a novel that had the same structure that Brennan gives us in Cold Snap. Lucy Kincaid's older brother - the one from the coma - Patrick - is trying to head home for Christmas but is sidetracked by a request from his mother. She's worried about her friend's daughter, Elle Santana. Patrick tracks her to her apartment and immediately all hell breaks lose and he's in it for the long haul. Runaways, kids from the street and drugs and prostitution and the sex slave trade are front and center. It's dramatic, high-tension, and fueled with the attraction between the two. Their adventure takes them half-way through the book, during which time Patrick is reaching out to other family members and Seth Rogan, Lucy Kincaid's man-with-a-past lover, needing his computer expertise. Then as soon as this first drama is wrapped up, the book flips back to the day Patrick's story begins and we move to Denver where Lucy, Sean and other family members are trapped in their hotel during a blizzard that prevents them from heading home to San Diego and family. Anyone who knows Brennan knows it won't be long before the body count rises and it does so ingeniously as the trapped FBI agents, forensic psychiatrist and Seth work to solve the "locked door" mystery. Who could be doing the killing? Where are they in the hotel? How many more women will die? And will Lucy and her gang make it out alive? I loved the flipping the story concept, and the second section was as nail-biting and tense as the first. And meanwhile you got two Kincaid thrillers for the price of one! Don't know Allison? Make the acquaintance. Fast. And then introduce yourself to Lucy Kincaid.

I really enjoyed this entry in the series. It had been a while since I returned to the Lucy Kincaid universe, and I hadn't realized that this book takes place around the Christmas holiday. Bonus for me since I'm about to kick off my holiday season reading to take a break from doom and gloom.

This book was actually more like three stories that tie together at the end with the Kincaid siblings all trying to make it home for Christmas. I was so glad to see Patrick finally get his own story and that we get caught up on what's happening with the rest of Lucy's siblings.

Allison Brennan prefaced the book with a note that Lucy and Sean would be moving to San Antonio so she wanted to take this opportunity to revisit Lucy's family since there won't be many opportunities to do so going forward. I love that she knows what makes her readers happy. It's great to catch up with past characters, and I'm looking forward to the next chapter of Lucy's story and where it takes her.

This was a really good book - more in depth meeting of the Kincaids and the Rogans - read so many books over the past week due to "Arthur's Anger".

If you haven't read this series, please consider doing so.

Really liking this whole series - thank you Allison Brennan!

Audiobook review (kinda rambly and I am feeling long winded, so read if you dare)

I do NOT remember this one. I've read them all (except the recent ones) and I have no memory of the events in this story at all. And I think I know why - it's more a compilation of short stories lumped in to a novel. Lucy Kincaid is only part of the story, the beginning focuses on her brother Patrick and an old childhood friend, Gabrielle (Elle), and their efforts to find a young girl who witnessed a bad man doing bad things (sex slavery). Then once that case is solved Patrick gets a call that his father had a heart attack and he must fly home. That's about the first half.

Jump to Lucy and she and Sean are working on a case (I totally forget what), and they solve their case then Lucy gets a call about her father having a heart attack and must fly home.

Then we get Lucy's other sister (forget her name) who is a cop and is at the hospital with her husband and father. The father is okay, we get her calling her siblings to come home for their dad, and we learn she and her husband have had trouble carrying a baby to term and she is again pregnant but seeming over the dangerous 15 weeks, when all of a sudden she notices a man walking away "funny" and decides to follow him. She is a cop so I guess she gets a pass there, but lets just say normal people don't follow strangers around. :/

Dangerous man proves to be dangerous and he is distraught over his sisters death that he believes was NOT natural and someone is guilty of killing her, either on purpose or thru negligence. He holds nurses hostages and demands his sister get an autopsy. The remaining part of the story is dealing with this.

So much is going on here and I don't understand why these weren't just short individual stories and not put in a book as if it were part of the series. You are not going to need to read this to follow the rest of the books in the series. There is mention of Lucy (new FBI agent) being assigned to the FBI field office somewhere in Texas (they said but again memory fails me), and that's good info to have but you can bet the next book is going to mention that so you don't need to read THIS book to learn it.

I give this 3 stars and will keep going with the series because overall I like the series. I haven't read the most recent releases so I don't know if I will keep going to infinity but I will certainly re-read those in the series up to the last book I didn't read and decide after that what I will do.

4 stars.

This one is basically 3 stories in one, with the first story focusing on Patrick, Sean's ex-partner and Lucy's brother. The concurrent second story has Sean, Lucy, Kate and Dillon solving a case whilst stranded in a hotel waiting to get home for Christmas. Then the last story happens after they got home to find themselves involved in a hostage situation.

We get to see more of the Kincaid family dynamics in this "Christmas" edition, especially between Lucy and her two older sisters. Sean is being his usual supportive self and is fast becoming another of my favourite male leads!

Now let's see how Lucy is going to wreck havoc in her new job...…

What I liked about this book is that it pulled in more of the Kincaid clan, all of whom we have read about in the past. I also really liked how the book was set up, 3 separate story lines, the first 2 running at the same time, while the 3rd taking place after.

I found the part with Patrick and Elle to be funny. They are so different and Elle just would not believe some of the things Patrick brought up, that annoyed me. I know that Elle had her heart in the right spot, but she went about things in the wrong way. I was glad to see that Patrick was able to help and that the outcome was a good one.

The second part had me laughing at first, mostly because it seems like Lucy and Sean can't go anyplace without running into dead bodies. I did like how Lucy and Sean, working with Kate and Dillon worked to figure things out. The crime and the reasoning why makes me shake my head, I know people go crazy like this. I did like the tidbit that Lucy learned about Sean and know it won't make any difference in their relationship.

The last part was great in that more of the Kincaids came into play. I can see why Carina did what she did, why Nick clued Lucy in, and why Lucy made the trade. By the end of the story I felt sorry for Charlie, he and Sarah were the big losers, but at least things stopped with them. I was glad to see Patrick's visitor and think that the mom was right, things would be changed when the trip ended.

This was actually three interconnected stories of the Kincaid family. The first as Patrick Kincaid and Gabrielle "Elle" Santana in San Francisco taking down a drug lord. Unfortunately this one was terrible since Elle was one of those TSTL heroines that totally piss me off.

The second story was Lucy Kincaid, Sean Rogan, Dillon Kincaid and Kate Donovan stuck in a hotel in Denver due to a nasty blizzard. Unfortunately for them, there was a serial killer locked down in the hotel as well and they spent two days figuring our who the killer was and taken them down.

The final story was about Christmas with the Kincaids in San Diego except that a hostage situation interrupted that as well. I liked how this one went down and loved that Lucy saved the day with her brilliant deductive reasoning regardless of the flack from the local cops.

3 1/2 stars - This novel is divided into 3 parts, starting with Lucy's brother, Patrick, being asked by their mother to check up on her friend's daughter. The daughter is an attorney doing mostly pro-bono work in a big city and hasn't returned her mother's calls. She's involved in a drug case with a young teenage girl who may have incriminating evidence on Mr Big. A human trafficking ring is discovered, and romantic sparks fly between Patrick and the attorney, Elle.

The 2nd part involves more of the Kincaid clan, including Lucy, stranded in Denver during a blizzard, trying to get home to San Diego for Christmas. Just so happens, a bloody hotel room is found, but no body, and the cops and forensic clan is involved.

Part 3 begins with the Kincaid patriarch suffering a heart attack and in the hospital. Just so happens, another Kincaid sibling follows a suspicious gent into the morgue, becomes a hostage, and belief is suspended.

Good family dynamics and character development along with a dash of action.

This style, with three stories in one, was her best yet. There were not a lot of wasted words or filler. The events and action kept going. I was going to give up on this series until I got through this book today. I hope the rest of the series is a bit more like this one - even if the stories were a bit fantastical!

I've read several books about Lucy Kincaid and I like them. This book was different. It contains three very different stories.

The main carachter in this story is Patrick, Lucy's brother. Jack, an other brother also show up to help Patrick.

In the second story Lucy and her boyfriend Sean are stuck at a hotel in Denver because of a snow storm. They live in Washington so I'm not sure why they would make a stop in Denver on the way to San Diego.

In the third part of the book Lucy and Sean arrive in San Diego. By the time they arrived her sister is already held hostage at the hospital where their dad is treated for a heart attack. She's a police officer. If seems very stupid to follow a man down to the basement! She could have stayed back and called security about a guy who isn't acting right!

This was a good book but I didn't really like that this book contained 3 different stories.

****2025***

I listened to the book again now when I've read all the previous books in the series. I still have a big problem with the way Corinna acted! She is a police officer who has worked for at least 10 years! She's unarmed and is pregnant! Why would she follow a guy who is acting strangely down the basement!?

Elle in the first story is also acting strangely! Who is going to help the girl if she is injured or killed!?

Cold Snap was fun. The first third of the book was about Lucy's brother Patrick, who had been sent to check on a friend of the family. Except for frequent mentions of the Kincaid name, I pretty much forgot I was supposed to be reading a Lucy Kincaid novel. I enjoyed Patrick and Elle's adventures. They're both compelling characters.

The middle third of the story was set at "home" for the Kincaids, where they'd all been planning to gather for a family Christmas.

A family emergency pushes the timetable forward, and stuff happens, as is wont to do with Lucy around, and almost the entire Kincaid clan is involved in one way or another.

The remainder of the book is wrapping up loose ends, catching a killer, gathering for Christmas, and a surprise visitor.

Anyway, unlike the book which "starred" Sean, I didn't feel a sense of missing something because Lucy wasn't front and center.

Cold Snap was a great addition to the Lucy Kincaid series.

This was one of my wishlist books, and I found it at the local library.

The seventh issue of this series is organized in a unique way: in parts. There are three distinct parts to this novel, making it read like three separate novellas all surrounding the same time frame: right before Christmas when all of the Kincaids are on their way home for the holidays.

In the first, Patrick Kincaid, Lucy's brother, is sent on an errand by his mother to figure out what's going on with a childhood friend: Gabrielle Santana. Upon finding her, he realizes that she's in over her head, doesn't know who to trust, doesn't know what's going on, and needs help despite not wanting to ask for it. Putting himself in danger in order to help Elle, he realizes that the drug trafficking ring that Elle is trying to protect kids from is only a front for something much more dangerous. Together they manage to discover the truth, but have to confront some of the most dangerous people in town in order to get officials to believe them.

In the second part, Lucy, Sean, Dillon (Lucy's brother), and Kate Donovan (sister-in-law and Dillon's wife), are trapped in a five-star hotel in Colorado due to a severe winter storm on their way home for the holidays. While here, relaxation is far from what they endure. Instead, they are greeted by screams from down the hall when one body after another are discovered. The odd part is, some of the victims even look alike. It's imperative that they find the killer before another person becomes a victim, but this first requires determining who the attacker is. Until they can pinpoint where a missing hotel guest is, they won't be able to make any definitive actions to protect the other guests.

In the third part, the Kincaid children are all contacted because their father has landed himself in the hospital due an unexpected heart attack. While visiting her father, Carina Kincaid takes note of a man who seems uneasy and angry – and she chooses to follow him, landing her in a hostage situation. The man believes that the hospital either made a mistake or is deliberately killing people – his sister included. Carina brings in her sister Lucy, ex-pathologist, to perform an autopsy in order to give this man the peace of mind he clearly needs, but it's not enough and the situation escalates as weapons and bombs are involved. SWAT and local PD are attempting to run the situation by the book, but take little time to try and understand the people involved. Everyone seems to have their own plan, and this causes events to transpire that otherwise would not need to happen. It's up to Lucy standing her ground in order to bring justice to the distraught man, Charlie.

In the epilogue, all three parts come together as the Kincaids are finally home together for the first time in awhile. At least temporarily, as Patrick and Elle are about to head out, Sean and Lucy want some time on their own before she starts her official position with the FBI, and Carina accepts the fact that she's going to be a mother. Overall, while a unique setup, this novel provides readers with more insight into the Kincaid family.

When you finish a book and just go Wow....then reread portions that got you to the end and again say Wow, I can’t imagine an author wanting anything more.

Cold Snap is actually three books in one. I admit I was a little irritated wondering where Lucy was in the first story. My irritation didn’t last long. We start on Saturday, December 22 where all Kincaid’s are trying to get to San Diego for Christmas. First Patrick (partner w Sean, was in a coma for two years) gets roped into heading to San Francisco to check on Gabrielle Santana. Her mom and Mrs. Kincaid are BFF’s and Elle isn’t coming home for Christmas and mama thinks something is going on.

Little Elle, isn’t so little anymore and is up past her arm pits in trouble. An attorney who does mostly pro-bono work and moonlights as a social worker is trying to figure a drug thing out and lands in the middle of a human trafficking ring. Patrick feels more alive then before the coma. Mystery and bad guys arrested w a little help from some other Kincaid’s or associates.

Bang, also on Saturday night Lucy, Sean, Dillion and Kate are grounded in Denver in a snow storm. All four in one room and a crime scene w lots of blood but no body just down the hall. Great little mystery and fun for the siblings and their significant to be helping in the: who done it.

Patrick and Jack are in a hotel room Monday morning when they get a call from sister Carina that dad has had a heart attack - hurry to San Diego.
Lucy, Sean, Dillion and Kate have just landed when they see a call on their phone. They learn about their dad and call home. Mama is speaking rapid fire Spanish so Lucy calls Nick. Their dad is ok but.....Carina has been taken hostage at the hospital.

Story number 3 is almost the whole family. A soldier thinks his sister was killed by a nurse and didn’t die of natural causes has a gun, a bomb and three nurses and Carina held hostage. Carina asks Lucy to come do an autopsy. How did she die?

Like I said Wow. If you have never read a Lucy Kincaid story run to the store. Start at the beginning. What a bunch of summer reads. Run don’t walk to the store or your computer.
