A very straight forward look at Buddhism from a Western perspective, in the mould of Stephen Batchelor. The book avoids jargon while still managing to introduce some complex ideas. The book holds up well after 20 years, and is less of a "how to" than a "why to" manual.

...I still haven't finished this book! I don't think I ever will. Stopped halfway through. I don't think it has anything to do with the book though. Maybe ill pick up where I left off someday...it is great for beginners!!

This is the book that convinced me to become a Buddhist. It was easy to understand and made a compelling argument.
