About the author

Arkady Vayner (1938 - 2009) was a Russian playwright and author. After graduating from high school with honors, he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute, and later joined the law faculty at Moscow State University.

Together with his brother, Georgy Vayner, he is the author of many works of detective stories, often taken from their own forensic practice. In addition, Vainer wrote plays and scripts for film and television.

An excellent old school procedural novel, supposedly based on true events. The Vayner brothers show off their insider knowledge of the Soviet legal system, and paint a vivid image of a "Bandit" villain driving the story. The narrator, the detective of the novel's title, is also nicely three-dimensional. He is a bit whiny but the story moves fast enough that I did not mind it. I thought the romance in the middle of the novel made the book sag a bit, but that is my only complaint.

Fun fact: the main character is never named in the book. He is just the "следователь". Because this opens up the identity of the character to some interpretation, on the Russian internet, this book is sometimes incorrectly claimed to be one in the Tikhonov series. But various details of Tikhonov's biography (cf. Лекарство против страха) do not match this characters' details, and the characterization is also quite distinct.

De multă vreme se întâmplă cu mine un lucru ciudat: indiferent ce s-ar vinde la un magazin, oricât de solicitată ar fi marfa aceea, când mă aşez şi eu la coadă observ ― de fiecare dată ― că în urma mea nu mai apare nimeni. Aşa că n-am niciodată prilejul ca ― ieşind pentru o clipă ― să spun celui din spate: „V-aş ruga… Sunt şi eu aici, la rând“. Să zicem că este o întâmplare. Dar uite că ciudăţenia se repetă şi la servici. E de ajuns să apară nu ştiu ce caz încâlcit şi fără vreo perspectivă, că se şi ajunge la concluzia că nimeni, în afară de mine, n-are timp să se ocupe de el. Iakov Mironovici nu-şi mai vede capul de treburi, Kolea Lavrov tocmai pleacă în concediu, iar Larisa Gorelova are copil mic… De când o ştiu, are mereu copil mic. Iată, deci, cum toate cazurile neplăcute îmi revin mie. În definitiv, dacă mă gândesc bine, nici nu prea există cazuri plăcute. Şi în ceea ce mă priveşte…

Trebuie observat că acelaşi lucru ciudat se întâmpla şi când îmi prezentam, întotdeauna ultimul, cererea de concediu; atunci să fi văzut tărăşenie: Kolea Lavrov nu s-a întors încă din staţiune, Iakov Mironâci pleacă, vezi bine, la o casă de odihnă, iar Larisa… Larisa Gorelova ― se ştie ― are copil mic! Într-un cuvânt: „se amână“ ― asta însemnând frumoasa lună noiembrie. Însă în anul acesta, închipuiţi-vă, totul a decurs neobişnuit de simplu.

Ieri am prezentat raportul, după care am şi primit, pe loc, rezoluţia: „Aprobat concediul începând cu data de cinci septembrie”.

Iar azi-dimineaţă, patru septembrie carevasăzică, m-a trezit telefonul. Buimac de somn, am răspuns precipitat: „Da, bine, am înţeles, sigur că vin, trimiteţi.. Şi numai după ce am abandonat receptorul mi-am amintit că a doua zi trebuia să plec. În concediu. Dar radiograma fusese deja primită…
