Very chatty. Very funny. A wonderful quick read. It's like she is talking to you.

A very chatty little tome that comes across as a rough outline for something grander and deeper. Not much history but that's fine because of the beautiful artwork

This is a wonderful piece of history in itself, recording the history of the English Country House. It's a really interesting book, not so much for the history it is purporting to portray, but for the history of the author (who lived at Knole house and was a member of the aristocracy) and the method she employs in attempting to portray English country houses. In actual fact, there really isn't very much "history" as such in this book at all. The author quickly becomes overwhelmed by the sheer nu ...more

I much prefer her fiction as this seems a little too much written as though we didn't know that she lived in a great big English Country House for most/all of her life. Her opinions are very much landed gentry, and the only really interesting point she has to make is that a bit of historical perspective is the only thing that really matters when judging the worth of the houses and architects that produced them. Nice illustrations in this edition.

"Those long galleries must have been draughty and cold unless you crouched and crowded round the big fireplace or got into the big bed and drew the curtains round you and shut yourself into the black secrecy of love and sleep with mistress or with wife."

Remarkably insular and self-satisfied.

Not knowing much about architecture, I often found myself lost throughout this short folio on country houses in England. However, it was still enjoyable because Vita Sackville-West's witty personality came through so strongly, and I learned a bit about this small part of English history that I hadn't known before.

Vita Sackville-West was a prolific author, poet and memoirist in early 20th-Century Britain who is known not only for her writing, but for her not-so-private, private life. While married to the diplomat Harold Nicolson, she conducted a series of scandalous amorous liaisons with many women, including the brilliant Virginia Woolf. They had an open marriage. Both Sackville-West and her husband had sa ...more
