I can't believe that this is the only work by this brilliant and prolific British crime writer on goodreads!
I read almost everything Mr. Gilbert published back in the "Golden Age" of crime fiction. His first mystery was published in 1947, his last in 1999. I found him in the 1980's and collected every book I could find.
I just don't have the words to describe how good his characters, plots, action, and settings are. This title is a fine example of the quality of his books. This is not particularly upper class British crime fiction; most of it is gritty and very real. He doesn't fit into any particular sub-genre. Though gritty, his stories are not hard boiled.
He was well appreciated by his fellow crime writers, winning a Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writers Association for lifetime achievement in 1994 and being named as a "grandmaster" by the Mystery Writers of America in 1988.
Searching out his books will be well worth your effort.
Aha! I have found the rest of Mr. Gilbert's books under the name Michael Gilbert.
