Claus Spreckles, there is a name few of us have ever heard of, and yet it is the subject of this wonderful biography by Dr. Sandra Bonura. This is one of the best written biographies I have read in decades. Let me start out by saying that the author has selected a wonderful individual to write about, a person I never heard of before, and has written in such a style that it is an easy read. Voluminously researched, yet not dense as so many biographies are. So who is C,laus Spreckles? Well he is an individual who came to the United States in the 1840s, an immigrant from Hanover, which is now in Germany, with $.75 in his pocket, and he rose to become one of the top 10 wealthiest Americans during the Gilded Age. Where did he make his money? Sugar which is obvious from the title. But there is so much more to this biography as we read about the young man who came to America and instead of going to the typical immigrant centers made his way to Charleston, South Carolina, and eventually worked his way up the ladder from clerk to owning a dry good stores in that city. Eventually forced to leave because he believed in selling to both white and black customers, he made his way to New York, where he opened another store. Never content, he eventually went into the beer business, which eventually led him from New York to California. In a while, he decided beer wasn't the business he wished to work in and so he went back to Germany and studied the beet root. This is a gentleman who was persistent, and who did everything he could to both rise of the top of his field, as well as bringing innovation and modernization. Eventually, he made it to Hawaii where he became friends with the King, and dominated the Hawaiian sugar market to the detriment of the controlling and ruling missionary children, who eventually overthrew the monarchy and threatened Claus to the point where he left and returned to California where he eventually came to dominate the sugar industry. This is a book filled with stories of his life, his business, his children, and the fact that he feuded with his own children to the point where he disinherited some of them and the family kept the court system busy with all their lawsuits against each other. And while Claus could be domineering. He was also driven to excellence. He did much to help the regular workers in both Hawaii and California as he came to dominate the sugar industry. As I said, this is one of the best biographies I have read in decades, and each chapter is divided into sub sections, which makes it easy reading. You might not have heard of Claus Spreckles when you start this book, but by the end, you will wonder why he has passed into oblivion. Outstanding effort by the author to bring this unknown titan of industry to life!

Wow man what a great book, so informative. It's nice to have a dad who get's his sons involved with the family business: however, you would hope that they would want to keep it going after you were gone...I mean there is always going to be a need for sugar!
The Spreckels family would have been great material for a modern day reality show in the making; I mean with the jealousy and backstabbing amongst the siblings and Claus disowning them for making him mad. While talking about making Claus mad, what about how Claus would get back at his rivals...Classic!
In all Claus was a titan and lived a marvelous life, long live his legacy!

I found this book to be amazing. I wanted to know more about Claus Speckels because of his connection to Aptos CA. I had no idea of all the wonderful things that came about because of this family. If you like history and biography you will love this. If you want to learn more about San Francisco and San Diego then read this. Sandra Bonura has really done a great job of making history come to life and in a very interesting way. I see that she also has a book about John Speckels I will have to read that too.
