¡El jaque mate! ¡¡La historia de este comic llega a su final!!
Slayers: Knight of Aqua Lord, el más reciente manga de esta legendaria serie! El eterno Hajime Kanzaka se unió nuevamente con Tommy Ohtsuka y su Studio Zombie (también responsables de Slayers Special y Premium) para realizar este comic. En esta ocasión, Kanzaka decidió crear una historia totalmente original, en vez de basarla en alguna de sus novelas previas, como lo había hecho en sus mangas anteriores. Rei Araizumi ha vuelto para hacer los diseños generales de los nuevos personajes, entre los que se destaca Lyos, el caballero del Rey Dragón del Norte, el Dragón de Agua. Lo más interesante de esta historia es que se centra en el conflicto creado por la ruptura de la Barrera Mágica que aislaba el mundo de Lina del resto del planeta. Así, Lina termina naufragando junto a Gourry en un continente extraño, el cual resulta ser la costa opuesta de la barrera. Knight of Aqualord sería una especie de continuación del manga de Slayers: Leyenda Demoniaca (chobakumadouden), ya que al final de este cómic justamente la barrera se rompía y Gourry perdía su legendaria Espada de la Luz. Slayers: Knight of Aqua Lord sale en formato B6 (12,8 x 18 cms. el mismo con el que se publicó en Japón), e incluye aclaraciones de la traducción y sobrecubiertas.

Considered to be the strongest of the "Slayers" manga, "Knight of the Aqua Lord" lives up to the hype. Whether Mr. Kanzaka finally got used to the manga format or he enjoyed the freedom offered to him by being able to tell a completely new story rather than retelling something he already told in novel format is up for debate.
Aqua Lord nicely expands upon the novels. We learn more about Deep Sea Dolphin's minions, and as she only has a brief cameo in the novels, and is the only one of the Mazoku lords not explored in any depth, this fills out the Slayersverse nicely. I also liked seeing more women in positions of power, something that had been largely absent in the novels and anime despite having some very strong female characters.
We also learn more about Ceiphied and the gods, who get little to no mention in the books. But what I really enjoyed was the exploration of the ideas of humans being trapped in a conflict between Mazoku and Gods, beings infinitely more powerful than them, and somehow surviving by tapping into vast sources of power. While in the novels (or anime for that matter) the idea of what could happen should an untrained or immoral human misuse the power is barely tapped, it is brought front and center here with Lyos and Fanon.
As for characters, Lina, Gourry and Amelia are more like their novel selves. Lina is more restrained than in the anime and has the experience and training to know how to use and not abuse her powers. Her challenge is to train Lyos, essentially a version of herself with no self control.
Usually I see Aqua Lord compared with Slayers TRY as an alternate storyline for either after the first 8 novels or Slayers NEXT, and Aqua Lord is the stronger story. It expands on the world that Mr. Kanzaka sets up more nicely and fits better. Only points of confusion for me is whether Gourry has found the Blast Blade yet or just uses a sword that Lina has magically amplified and whether or not Lina can use Chaos magic (granted, considering most of the novels end with her using the Ragna Blade in conjunction with something else, it was refreshing to see Mr. Kanzaka find a completely new way for Lina to defeat an enemy).

El gran final. Lyos culmina su bildungsroman, su evolución, y su conexión con Lina y los demás se fortalece, pero sobre todo con ella (joder, es que me encanta la pareja que hacen. Lo siento, Gourry, pero Lina X Lyos a muerte). El poder de Haruker creo, está exagerado (por simple lógica, Zeros es superior al concentrar el poder del general y el sacerdote, y nunca he visto un despliegue de semejante fuerza por parte de Zeros, aunque bien es cierto que se contiene la mayor parte del tiempo). Pero está todo bien llevado. La unión de fuerzas de Lina y Lyos, con el poder divino, desemboca en una épica batalla que se disfruta muchísimo.
En lo personal, me gusta más Knight of Aqualord que Try. Existen dos bandos bastante diferenciados en este sentido. Mi caso es curioso, ya que me encanta cómo se siguen explorando los distintos puntos cosmológicos de Slayers aquí (y está Lyos, por supuesto) pero Try tiene a todo el elenco original salvo Sylphiel, y eso es un puntazo a su favor, ya que no ver a Zelgadiss ni a Zeros se hace raro. Como dije, Lyos es mi tercer personaje favorito por detrás de Ameria y Lina, pero admito que para mí, el mejor equipo es de las dos primeras temporadas y el de Leyenda Demoníaca (Lina, Gourry, Ameria, Zel, Sylphiel y Zeros). Ellos son para mí la máxima esencia de Slayers, y prefiero que estén juntos (pero con Lyos. Lyos es tan genial). Además, Try se sale a la cosmología de otros mundos (Dark Star y Volphied) y eso también es muy, muy interesante. Pero me gusta más cómo está llevado todo en Aqualord. Ojalá algún día hiciesen el anime, pero no creo. Ya está Try, y Aqualord viene a ocupar su lugar, pero en el manga, para crear dos experiencias distintas.
¡En fin, larga vida a Lyos!
PD: se habló de una hipotética continuación (de hecho, el final es un tanto abierto) pero parece ser que no será así, ya que luego vinieron Revolution y Evolution-R. Pero sería genial ver algo, una OVA aunque sea. Pero algo. Quiero oír hablar a Lyos.
