I always love Wilder's writing. She's like the gardening grandmother you always wanted, but never had -- warmhearted, smart, adventurous, passionate, opinionated. I can just imagine having tea in the garden and arguing about a particular plant's, or color of flower's, placement. Despite this having been written during the World War I era, I found lots of advice and ideas I felt were relevant to today's garden. I really think she rates with the great English gardeners of the same time (for example, Gertrude Jekyll), yet she really remains pretty much unknown. And since she is American, and writes about American gardening with cold winters and hot, humid summers - I find her to be a treasure. Can't recommend any of her gardening books enough!
