The book is okay. The unified process is not. Prctitioners and managers were looking for a process for developing software. Consulting companies and others with internal processes could produce software, but others struggled. Research computing was often done by small groups (1-3). A process might help. But this wasn't it. Too much overhead, not enough focus on what mattered -- requirements on the front-end and testing throughout the development process.
