In The Island Of Adventure, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann, Jack, and Kiki the parrot are plunged into danger when they investigate sinister happenings on the mysterious Isle of Gloom. What is the secret of the old castle on the hill, and why are the locals so afraid of it? The children are determined to find out in The Castle Of Adventure.
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
The Castle of Adventure by Enid Blyton was another favourite of mine growing up. The story starts with two children (Jack and Lucy-Ann) who are adopted by a family and they are great friends with the other two children (Philip and Dinah). The children are on their school holidays but manage to find themselves in the middle of an exciting adventure. They find an abandoned castle and find a secret way in and uncover something quite unexpected! Enid Blyton's writing is fantastic and the book is jam packed full of excitement and mystery that will leave readers on the edge of their seats wanting to find out more. I remember as a child thinking 'just one more chapter before i go to bed' as I was desperate to find out what happened next.
The Famous Five by Enid Blyton led me to reading this book and it really doesn't disappoint. I really enjoy the characters bonds in the story and again this is another book full of some great themes which will be really important for children. The theme of friendship again resonates throughout which is a lovely aspect for children to grasp just how important this is. Again, courage and bravery and pushing the boundaries are themes which occur.
I think this is one of those books that I would want children in my class to read as it shows a different way of life for children many years ago. Far gone are iPads, computers and staring at a television screen in ones free time, for children it was about getting out and exploring. Taking a packed lunch in their napsack, making dens, climbing trees, and going on exciting adventures with their friends. I do understand things have changed somewhat and it is a little harder now to go and explore an abandoned forest and castle alone, but something resonates for me within Enid Blyton's style of writing and her stories. Children should let their imaginations run wild and what better place to do it within an exciting abandoned castle and a mystery to solve! Top notch, absolutely love it and a must read in my opinion!
I loved this two in one book.personally I am a Enid Blyton fan so I love each and everyone of her books. I have read the individual books as well but it is more fun to read such a fat book. It looks like your reading such a fat book, and once I completed this book I bought the next the two in one book series ( the valley of adventure and the sea of adventure) . I would highly recommend this book to youngsters.
I read and enjoyed the Island of Adventure when I was in grade school. Now I read the same book to my younger grandchildren and found that they were as enthralled as I was more than 50 years ago. It is a grand story to be enjoyed by children of all ages. A classic!
I read so many books with my children, they read a chapter, I read a chapter, so I thought I would welcome you into their world of literature too.
My six year son is absolutely in love with Enid Blyton's Adventure Series. He adores Kiki and her many wonderful sayings. He is inspired by the ideas the children in the stories come up with and has started using them in his playing.
Hearing him read these books with ease and expression is an amazing sound. The voices he does and the pace at which he reads is excellent.
If you wish to start your child on chapter books, I suggest you start with these, or anything else by Enid Blyton for that matter, sharing the role of the reader and allowing your child to take the lead.
Philip, Lucy-Ann, Dinah and Jack will delight you and your child for hours. Your children will beg you for just one more chapter at bed time, and with these double adventure in one book... well let's just say its a great way to introduce them to bigger books later in life such as War and Peace ;)
The first two books in the "Adventure" series, combined in one volume. This has always been a favorite series of mine, and I enjoyed re-reading these, despite practically knowing them by heart.
A slight change has been made in this edition of Island: Aunt Polly's handyman's name is Joe instead of Jo-Jo. And I think the description of him is also slightly different. But it does not really affect the story.
When Philip meets Jack and his sister Lucy-Ann, and brings them home to Craggy-Tops for the holidays, no one expects the excitement and danger that they, along with Philip's sister Dinah, will face when they explore the Isle of Gloom.
In Castle, it is the springtime, and Philip and Dinah's mother has rented a cottage on a hillside topped with an old abandoned castle. None of the locals will go near the castle because of the legends about it. But when Jack spots a pair of eagles nesting there he is determined to find a way in, leading the four into another adventure.
This was an adventure book that brought joy in the 1994. 95% liked this book. I'm sure your wondering why there are facts in my review. The reason there is is because its a wonderful book that I want people to read. This book surprised me a lot as a book that was published before my generation was so fun. I had a bad perspective that old novels would not be fun as that time was so different than now. But by reading this book and knowing how much books of what age, genre it is has a lot of impact to the reader was a reason I started to read a lot of books. Frankenstein, Anne of green gables, Dracula , Moby Dick ... Sorry not Moby Dick. It was a hard book that I did not understand. Each book was really great novels that my mind was saying 'wow' in the last page. Who knows what this book will give you. Read and find out.
These are two delightful adventure stories written by Enid Blyton. Philip and Dinah are siblings who meet Jack and Lucy Ann.Together with their pet parrot Kiki, the children embark on an adventure filled journey. Investigating mysterious boats, discovering strange activities, fire signals on cliff tops and mystery men. They make new friends - Bill Smugs and Tassie. Both the stories are really entertaining. Reminded me of the time when we as kids used to get the books of Enid and how exciting all those adventures had seemed. Well the stories have not lost their charm and still are wonderful to read.
Other books in Enid Blyton's Adventure series were read to my class when I was in elementary school many years ago. I remember thinking the four children had very interesting adventures without much adult supervision. I especially liked the troublesome parrot, Kiki. I purchased the eight stories in the Adventure series to read to my young grandchildren and hope they like them as well as I did when I was young.
It's a pretty good book. It's about a group of 4 kids who just happen to be able to get adventures really easily. In that way, it's kind of stupid, because all sorts of things happen to them that would never happen in real life. More later, the loudspeaker at hw center just called us all to the front room to be picked up.
