1 book3 followersYuKong Zhao is an expert on China business and strategic development at Siemens Corporation. He was the Director of China Business Development from May 2005 to March 2013. Currently, he is the Director of Global Planning at Siemens Energy Inc.
Before moving to US in 1992, Zhao was an industrial strategist at Institute of Management & Policy, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing. He received the honorable “Science & Technology Progress Award” from CAS, and published one book: Mining Cities in China: Structural Reform and Sustainable Development, which was selected into the preeminent Young Scientists Series in China.
As a renowned expert, Zhao was invited by the Foreign Expert Administration of China, Peking University, Southern USA Federation of Chinese Professional Associations, and various Chinese and US organizations to provide management consulting, and to give speeches in various conferences. In 2001 he was interviewed by Mr. Wen Jiabao, then the Deputy Premier of China, and was interviewed by the Chinese Central Radio Station in 2004 as a successful overseas Chinese.
He received an international MBA Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1996 as the best foreign student of the top ranked program in the US. In 1986 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Electronics from the University of Science & Technology of China.
Zhao grew up in a Confucianism-influenced family in China. He was particularly influenced by his grandfather, a former elementary school principal who practiced Confucian teachings. During his 17-year stay in the US, Zhao participated in many US-China activities. His experience and the social circle in which he lived provided him with great insights into the successful elements of Chinese and American cultural values.
Zhao is married to Wenlan Li and has a happy family. Using a well balanced parenting approach that combines strengths of both Chinese and American cultures, they have been successfully educating their two children, Hubert and Selena, to become top students at their A rated schools in Florida, a student leader and a National Junior Beta Science Competition champion.
In his spare time Mr. Zhao keeps abreast of history, culture, and contemporary economic and social issues. He likes to travel and cooks delicious Chinese food.

It is a truly unusual and excellent self-help book. In a crowd of hundreds in its category, it stands out because
1. It provides an international comparison of where we are, and points out what we need to do. Clearly, the status quo will not help us maintain a good lifestyle. As the author points out, with global competition, declining education and mounting debt, we have to be smarter about how we handle our lives and our parenting.
2. Although it seems to be harsh, the author shakes up many of our conventional views, such as just “being yourself” instead of “being better;” just keeping family members happy, having “self-esteem,” instead of challenging them to have better behaviors and better futures. More strikingly, his criticism of our fantasy of celebrities and our worship of sports (instead of knowledge) is right on the point. These values have been driving our educational decline among other things.
3. His introduction of Confucian wisdoms is timely. As we are wondering why China develops their economy so rapidly, why Samsung is able to compete with Apple and why Asian Americans have become the highest-income, and best-educated racial group in the US, this book provides all the answers. It is the great cultural values that make the difference, just like Protestantism helped the rise of capitalism in the West.
4. Finally, the thing I like the most, is that it is easy to read and easy to apply to our lives. I want to give the author a lot of credit for writing it as a self-help book so that people can connect and apply these wisdoms to their lives.
It is a great book in a time that we need “out of the box” thinking. It helps us rethink our lives and our futures. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to have a happy life and successful children!

Wow! This book explains it all!
Back in June 2012, Pew Research Center called Asian Americans the highest-income and best-educated racial group in the US. I know that most of my Asian friends are very successful. They raise high-achieving children. In the last few years they were able to invest in real estate when many other families were struggling with foreclosures. It is our cultural heritage that makes a big difference. I did not realize that we knowingly or unknowingly followed many great Confucian values until I read this book.
It is a great book that explains Confucian wisdoms in such an easy way. Its practical guidelines and many examples are very helpful.
This is a must read for families who want to raise successful children and to manage their money and family better! For many families with East Asia origins, this book is great for teaching their kids about our great tradition.

I received this book for free via the Goodreads First Reads program.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I especially appreciated the way it approached education. The author says that you should maintain a child's interest in learning. I believe this is true, since that's the way my parents raised me - and I still love to learn.
All in all, an excellent book - I would highly recommend it.
