I'm torn on what to give this book. It probably deserves 5 stars but I just can't do it. The writing was excellent, I've been reading all of Lizzy Fords books since she started a mere 2-ish years ago and you can see how she has grown as story teller. Her stories are always excellent, but this one flowed very well, I think better than the others. The characters are ones you fall in love with. From the main ones of Decker and Summer, to the minor characters of Biji and Sam. If they are named in th I'm torn on what to give this book. It probably deserves 5 stars but I just can't do it. The writing was excellent, I've been reading all of Lizzy Fords books since she started a mere 2-ish years ago and you can see how she has grown as story teller. Her stories are always excellent, but this one flowed very well, I think better than the others. The characters are ones you fall in love with. From the main ones of Decker and Summer, to the minor characters of Biji and Sam. If they are named in the book, they typically have a purpose. I highly recommend this book to lovers of paranormal romance, YA books, or just good writing all together.

Now for the actual book review - this will contain spoilers, so please stop reading if you don't want to know what happens in this book. At the end of the spoiler, there are some "***" and I will finish the review, so you can skip down there if you like. There are lots of twists and turns and I don't want to give it away if you like surprises.

*BEGIN SPOILER*

So Summer comes from an orphanage, hasn't had any friends, nor a boyfriend and now she is in a magick school where she belongs - all very believable. There are two types of magic - light and dark. Light = good, Dark = bad and it all needs to balance (Lizzy is a fan of writing about balance). And you have to choose through tests which kind of magic you are - do good - Light, do bad - Dark, and once you are Dark, you can never go back to Light. So basically, one mistake and your are screwed. Her powers reside with air and earth of the five elements types (air, earth, fire, water, spirit) and apparently she is very powerful - how and why we don't know yet (Lizzy is good at holding back details where you want them and then bringing them out in later books). She at first likes the twin Brother Beck, then goes to the other twin Decker because he makes her magick 'sing' - again - it fits with the story. She finds a fawn (baby deer - and I have to say it is never good when animals are introduced early in a book or in a movie), nurses it back to health, all good here I guess. But apparently this is her "test" to be on the side of Light, which I don't believe one little bit. It was too easy. I think the test is when someone kills the deer (hence the early introduction of the animal), and surprisingly she fails the test and turns to dark side. This is the part of book that bugs me. From here, she is dark - oh I forgot to mention that her boyfiend Decker is the collector of dark magic souls and he now has to go collect her soul. Oh and since she put the deer out of it's misery and killed it in the end, he also has to kill her. Talk about unforgiving rules here. So anyway, he goes to get her, he can't do it, and somehow (it is explained how in the book, I just don't want to type it all out) Summer ends up going off the end of a cliff and dying. BOO! But wait - - maybe she isn't dead, maybe there is a way back from the dark side, because you see, a dark master cannot be with a dark witch; he can only be with a light witch, to balance out the evil in him. I have never been a fan of too much drama, I like some drama, even a fair amount of drama, but my rule of thumb is don't mess with the heroine in the book. This is definitely messing with Summer.

End of spoiler - So I guess, now that I have written all this down and it has evoked such emotion from me, I should, and will give it five stars. To Lizzy Ford - your writing and story telling ability rocks! I hope you continue writing forever but I don't like all this stress one book causes me...

OMG!!! What a freaking amazing book! I wish I could have given this book an even higher rating. This book had me hooked from the beginning and still hasn't let me go. I have read most of Lizzy Ford's books and looked forward to this series. Like everyone else lately I've been reading a lot of YA, and overall I liked the book, but I had a few issues that caused it to be a 3.5 star read for me.

This is the start to another great and addictive series from Lizzy Ford. From the first words of the book, I was hooked! There is everything in the book from suspense to romance. I absolutely love the creativity and ability of the author to bring these stories to life.
I can not wait for the release of the 2nd book because I am so anxious to see what is next in store for the series.

LOVED IT! Sat down to read it and finished it in about an hour and a half. I didn't even want to take the time to write the review right after I finished it. Dark Summer was my first Lizzy Ford experience. I call it an experience and not just a "read" or a "book" because it is so much more than that. Dark Summer was hands down the best book I have read in years. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I sometimes hate recommending certain books because I am not sure how the other person will like it, but I recommend this book to everyone on the planet. The secrets in Dark Summer are intriguing, well crafted & revealed at just the right pace to keep you reading. I enjoyed every minute I spent in the world that Lizzy Ford has created here & would have been disappointed when I reached the final page, if I hadn’t known that there was more to the series.

It's been a while since I read both YA and a paranormal that really capture my attention. Thank god for Dark summer! It was different and so entertaining and that cliffhanger! I'm so glad all the books in this series are out, I'm immediately jumping to the 2nd book!

Both of these books were authored by Lizzy Ford and I must say that I am very impressed with her level of imagination, along with her ability to portray the worlds and spirits of Light and Dark.

This is one of those books where I bounce back and forth between frustrated and enamored.

Enamored: The idea of witchlings and twin Masters of the Light and Dark
Frustrated: The world building just wasn't there... I had so many unanswered questions! How do these witches get their powers? Are there lots of witchlings? Is there some sort of hierarchy? Are witchlings actually human? What's with the "Sams"?

However, Summer was definitely NOT the type of Heroines I prefer. She was quite a damsel in distress and most of all, a person who allowed someone to bully her and accepted it. Not that I faulted her personalities. Her characters was actually understandable and appropriate with her childhood history. A girl who had nothing and wanted to be optimistic that good things came her ways. She was just too naive and wanting too much to be good an I Loved Lizzy Ford's books and this one was no different. However, Summer was definitely NOT the type of Heroines I prefer. She was quite a damsel in distress and most of all, a person who allowed someone to bully her and accepted it. Not that I faulted her personalities. Her characters was actually understandable and appropriate with her childhood history. A girl who had nothing and wanted to be optimistic that good things came her ways. She was just too naive and wanting too much to be good and accepted. Decker was a good Hero for her. A totally dark bad boy type. Nothing unexpected but I loved the fact that there was no complicated love triangle between Summer and the Twin Turners... much. That's what I love most about Lizzy Ford's Style. No Matter how the Heroines might whine or sometimes acted childish, they were mostly decisive of who they fell in love with and their chemistry were often sickeningly sweet and romantic which I admittedly liked despite being totally cheesy. Same goes here. Although Summer might find Beck more attractive or more 'suitable' for her, she eventually went with her heart albeit with the help of the situation.

The magical world was very interesting and had so much potential but I thought the story was focused on a little too much at the relationships and the high school dramas. Both Turner Twins were not exactly the totally swoon-worthy perfect type of Heroes. Their actions were pretty much childish and irresponsible as well but I guessed that was to be expected since they were 17 turned 18 while Summer was 16 turned 17. Overall, I actually liked the book. I loved Lizzy Ford styles and no matter how annoying and frustrated I might get with her characters, I still found myself loving them in some annoying weird ways. They always had something I liked about them. Summer who was pretty much a damsel but I actually sympathized and understanding towards her actions. Decker who was supposed to be dark tall handsome but get shy and actually pretty much clueless at everything which was rather cute. Beck who made all the terrible dramatic mistakes, a typical handsome all-American boy who you couldn't help but liked because he was just genuinely nice. He just made too many stupid mistakes. Other characters complemented well into the story. The overall story was actually pretty enjoyable in the high school drama in magic school kinda way (Definitely Not Harry Potter Style!).... You know with the beautiful Bimbos as the Mean girls. Fortunately, there was actually serious life-and death fighting going on and not just typical girl-on-girl actions. That would totally made me rolled my eyes (again) as well as unconsciously throwing my kindle into the dustbin. Lizzy Ford was pretty good with the fighting description and I loved that she was bloody about it.

My Major and Super Major let down point was the Typical Cliche theories of Dark versus Light. I totally got the idea of Dark not equivalent to evil but why was dark black? Why all the dark witchlings had to wear black or gothic or dark heavy make-up? Why the light witchlings wore colorful clothes and totally beautiful in the typical southern belle kinda way. I could understand the dark or light personalities but why the fashion stream?!?!? that was totally too cliche for me.

The book starts with Summer's arrival at a boarding school. She is picked up by Beck, whom she likes at once, since he seems to be a good-looking, good-natured and easy-going type of the guy. Shortly afterwards they are joined by his twin brother Decker, with dark eyes and dark and brooding personality. There is unmistakable rivalry between them. On her way through the forest Summer feels something (supernatural?) following her. As it appears to be some supernatural stuff has been going on in Summer's life for years, which is also the reason why she had to change school so often and was bullied by other kids. At this new school for Witchlings, people with magick in their blood, who can be either Light or Dark, she has a chance to find her place and to get control of her abilities. At first she can't really believe everything she is told, but as she gains experience she also opens her mind and accepts her nature.

Summer is an orphan who has experienced only bad things from other people, so she is afraid to make friends. But she feels drawn to the twins, especially Decker. Summer is scared because she does not really understand the difference between Light and Dark, and that being Dark doesn't mean being. And very soon Summer learns that Darkness needs its Light, and vice versa. And the most important lesson is that a simple benevolent decision can tip the scales, and put everyone's soul in danger.

It is an amazing story. It happens in a boarding school (I like YA stories about schools), it has some new supernatural stuff, not just your typical magic, vamps, weres or angels; there is a hypothetical love-triangle (which got me scared at the very beginning, since I am tired of being torn between the main heart interests), which has been resolved very quickly and almost painlessly; there is some loooooove (and lust ^^); there is some hope for a happy-ending. I absolutely loved the development of the relationship between Summer and Decker. You can easily see the connection, at the same time it was easy to understand their constraints towards each other. And Decker, despite his dark and brooding nature, is such a sweetheart. In comparison to him, Beck loses his points, though he is a nice guy. Hope he will put his big Master of Light panties on in the next book. Other supporting characters are depicted really well. I personally like Biji- she is fun and has the backbone.

All in all, a fantastic book that I'm definitely going to read again. And I absolutely can't wait to sink my teeth/eyes into the second one.

Summer is on her way to a brand new school literally in the middle of no where, it is surrounded my trees and nature something Summer has never really been around before and for some reason it comforts her and she feels a connection. The first people she meets at her new school and brothers, well twins to be precise. Hot twins. Decker is the person to catch my eye the most, and of course he is the story's bad boy, what can I say a naughty man is right up my street I love them.

The school itself seems a little different, and Summer soon finds out that finally there is a place full of people just like her a group of magic users who can manipulate the elements and use certain spells. Summer finds out she has an affinity for not only one element but two, it is no wonder that she felt so at home with the forest as she gets her powers from earth and wind.

Summer also learns more about the mysterious Decker who happens to be a Dark student while his brother is a Light user. They both also happen to be next in line to take over the roles of 'Master of the night and fire' and 'Master of the light' there job will be to make sure the laws of the light and dark are not to be broken. At first i was a little confused by the magic system and it took me a few chapters to get the hang of it but once I did it was more than worth it as I liked her unique take on magic, it wasn't a story line that has been recycled it was original.

Summer is a very naive girl, and sometimes yes this can border on annoying but those moments are few are far between. There are a lot of good characters in this book and defiantly a few surprises along the way that make it an excellent read to sink your teeth into and make you never want to leave.

This book was such a pleasant surprise and I did not want to put it down, it was so good I straight away had to purchase about 5 more of her books (They are all such a good price!).

Yes the ending does have a HUGE cliffhanger, but the good thing for us is the next book is already out, YAY. I do recommend getting the in between novella as it explains a lot and will let you go into the second book with added knowledge.

I haven't read about witches in a while and what a treat you've got waiting for you here. This book took me to the edge of the forest and back. You'll understand what i mean by that once you've read it. :) I was captivated with it from the very beginning. I don't know about you but, I love when a book grabs your attention from the start and you want to read more and more. You become invested in the characters and through the words you read you are right there with them doing and feeling everything. This is what Lizzy Ford did here.

What grabbed my attention was a set of twins that came to welcome Summer to the new school. You heard me right twins. They might look alike but they are oh so different. Of course you've always got a good and bad twin but oh, Decker is truly the bad boy in this case. He is the Dark twin the rebel if you will. Dark and mysterious. Everything about him is just so sexy. That is why openly the girls want the good twin but secretly dream about being with Decker. On his 18th birthday he is going to inherit all of the Dark souls to become the Master of Night and Fire and His brother the Master of Light. Their blood line is special and their family was gifted with the powers of dark and light to keep the balance in order.

Summer has no idea what she's into here. After her parents died in a car crash, at the age of 6, she was sent to an orphanage. Now at the age of 16 she's been to more schools than she can count. Summer has magic and this magic has caused her trouble at all of the schools shes ever been to. She even blew one up once. She has no doubt that this new school is going to be the same as all of the others. They are going to get tired of her craziness and send her back to the orphanage. Just when everything seems to be going well for Summer, She's made a new friend, she's starting to fit in with her classmates, she evern grabbed herself a hot boyfriend, but her world starts to crumble when little by little things start to go wrong.

I'm not going into more detail and spoil the surprise but lets just say that Decker and Summer have a relationship like no other. They are light and dark and together they are the perfect balance. The book leaves us with a huge cliffhanger that left me breathless and turning my pages for more, not believing that's how it ended.

Darn you Lizzy Ford. * screams all dramatic like with my fist in the air*. I hope the next book comes out very very quickly because i am on pins and needles here. :) ...more

Alright, so I'm not going to rehash the description/summary, but I will mention:

There's a difference between being innocent, and being stupid right? Unfortunately, with Summer, the distinction wasn't clear. I was beyond frustrated at her embarrassing naivety, as she was constantly picked on, and made fun of by Dawn (Mean girl), and her followers. It was just embarrassing. I wanted to crawl under my blanket and hide or something, every time Summer did something "stupid" b/c apparently sh 4/5 stars

However, I could see why Summer lacked confidence. If I was an orphan, being tossed around from school to school, with no money (relying only on state compensation), having no friends or family, I'm sure I wouldn't be the most confident girl around. Still, I was overwhelmed with the constant reminder of her being an orphan. I got it the first time. There's no need to constantly remind the reader that she's an orphan. Not only does Summer mention it every other chance she gets, the people around her act like it's so strange, and it's just... awkward? And the constant reminders of how big her breasts were... Um, yeah, no. Didn't really work for me. Neither did the whole "I'M SO FAT" rhetoric, with her being a size 4 and all. *rolls eyes*

Also, the romance felt a bit rushed. What happened during the first week Summer spent with Decker?! Show me, don't tell me! I wanted to see more of the push-n-pull between Summer and Decker, before they became an official couple.

So, despite my very minor complaints mentioned above, I enjoyed reading Dark Summer. The plot was intriguing, packed full of mystery, suspense, surprise, rivalry, and romance. I also really liked Dawn, even though she was a total Mean Girl, and a bully. I hope to see more of her in the sequel. Also, I'm hoping to see Summer embrace her dark side. I wanna see more development with her character: growth, maturity, depth, and a backbone. I have my fingers crossed. I loved the the whole Light v. Dark magic concept, and with so many unanswered questions, I'm hoping the sequel will deliver. ;-)

Shelves: great-series

I was so captivated by this book, I went online to see when the next one is coming out. End of 2012...yay for me, because the end is almost here (hope the Author get that's hint) Anyhoo, while I was online I was excited to read how everyone else loved this book too. Maybe even see if they had predictions on the next book. I was completely baffled that a "couple" were actually taking away stars because the book ended in a serious cliffhanger. Have no fear people, because I will be the first to drive over and start throwing eggs at Author's house, when they write these AMAZING books and leave me hanging....ask Stacey Rourke & Lisa Morgan, if you do not believe me. So I say throw eggs, not take away stars over cliffhangers.

What's this great book about. Witches some good, some bad, and some ugly! Oh yes Sasquatch is real people! Summer is now set in her new school and making new friends. Also she has a new pet. This book has the good boy and a bad boy...so everyone will be pleased. The character's are so exceptional that you actually feel like you want to whoop Dawn's butt. Beck who is the Master of Light and Decker Master of Fire and Night makes you want to let just say melt. I am so team Decker . You also get a little action, if you know what I mean. Jodie will love that. Seriously, if you love to be pulled in and sucked dry by a captivating story. One that plays with your heart strings and at the same time making you feel so angry you think your going to turn purple. Right up till the very end, where you feel like the Author knock the breath out of you. Read this book. This story will compel you so much, one minute you will be in the woods and the next step you will be following rose pedals to the bedroom, doing the sookie sookie dance!

I always enjoy Lizzy’s stories, and this one was no different than the others. Within just a few pages I was pulled into this magical world and it held me tight right to the end.

Dark Summer pulled on my every emotion. You know it’s an awesome book when you find yourself muttering at the characters as if they can actually hear you. I'm a big fan of Lizzy Ford, but this was not her best work. The overall concept if good - an imbalance of the Light/Dark magic (and of course our protagonist is the one to fix it). NOTE: It does end on a cliffhanger.

However, there was too much random crap happening that had no effect on the plot. There's a scene where Decker and Summer go out on a lake and show off their magic, which is all well and good, but I don't need 10 pages where NOTHING RELEVANT TO THE PLOT HAPPENS. I appreciate being s ...more

I received this book from Young Adult and Teen Readers for an honest review.

What an amazing and captivating story! This is one of those stories you pick up to read and are not sure what you will find when you first turn the pages. As the story unfolds, you are pulled deeper and deeper into the lives of magical students living in a secluded private school setting in the middle of the woods.

Loved it!

Lizzy Ford drew me in from the first page and the story stayed with me long after the last page. I really enjoyed watching her weave magic into our modern day world. Her descriptions really brought the forest and the camp to life. I loved seeing the characters, especially Sam through her eyes.
