सुनील किसी ‘डैमसेल को डिस्ट्रेस’ में ना देख पाने की अपनी लाचारी से मजबूर था । लेकिन इस बार उस ‘डैमसेल’ - झूठी ‘डैमसेल’ ने उसकी ऐसी चक्करघिन्नी बनाई कि वो खुद ही ‘डिस्ट्रेस’ में आ गया । कला नाम की एक ऐसी खूबसूरत औरत की कहानी कदम-कदम पर झूठ बोलने की कला में खूब पारंगत थी ।

जब "हकीकत" जैसा अख़बार राजनगर के सिर्फ बेईमान और अमीर लोगो को ब्लैकमेल करता था तो किसी ने कोई सुपारी या एक्शन क्यों नहीं लिया, ऊपर से हकीकत का सम्पादक मायाराम खुलेआम घूमता है, ऐसा प्लाट कतई हजम नहीं होता.
ये कहानी एक अनुवाद है तो पढ़ते हुए विदेशी कहानी होने का एहसास भी होता है, मैं तो कहानी से जुड़ नहीं पाया. उपन्यास काफी धीमी गति की है, पाठक को कहानी का भी पता है और लेखक भी रोमांच होने के बाद इसे अच्छी तरह से स्थापित नहीं कर सका.
एक मध्यम स्तर का उपन्यास कहा जा सकता है, कहानी अच्छी है लेकिन नीरस ज्यादा प्रतीत होती है.

अत्युत्तम।
कला, प्रारंभ से अंत तक एक ऐसी औरत के रूप में सामने आती है, जो कदम-कदम पर झूठ बोलती है। फिर भी सुनील एक मानवीय संवेदना के कारण खतरों से खेलकर उसको हर तरह की मुसीबत से निकालता है। अंत में सुनील के प्रयास से ही वह निर्दोष साबित होती है और फिर एक सच्ची संवेदनशील औरत बन कर सुनील का कृतज्ञ बन कर दिखाती है।

Sunil Chakravarti goes snooping in a social club frequented by la crème de la crème of Rajnagar, usually to romance people other than their spouses. There he spots a strikingly beautiful young lady.
To his astonishment, the young lady turns up at his office the following morning requesting his help. Another man present at the club at the same time- the managing editor of the sleazy publication Haqeeqat- is blackmailing her and she cannot risk being seen meeting the blackmailer. The quixotic Sunil, who has a weakness for damsels in distress, agrees to help her- a mistake he soon regrets.
Surprise upon surprise unfolds, as the story takes an utterly unexpected turn. A man is murdered and Sunil becomes one of several suspects. Almost everyone concerned is playing his or her own game, even as they are unaware of the vicious machinations of the others. Amidst the tangled web of conspiracies, Sunil has to unmask the real culprit, if only to serve his own skin.
It is impossible to say anything more without a spoiler or two. It is easily one of the best novels from Surendra Mohan Pathak's early career (he was a young man of 28 when he wrote Jhoothi Aurat). It is remarkable that this novel has hardly aged despite the passage of nearly half a century. If you overlook The six digit landline numbers, there is little to suggest that it was written several decades ago.
I would recommend this to any fan of mystery novels.

Very Nicely written novel by the writer. Suspense is maintained till the end of novel. One cannot left till the end of the story. Good one.
